Abstract

The lightweight metal construction system begins with a beam (300, 302) formed from a single piece of cold formed sheet steel or other sheet metal which is bent lengthwise along four lines to form a triangular cross section with two wings, side-by-side, extending from its apex. Various connectors (304, 306) which have lengths much shorter than the lengths of the beams are provided for attaching one beam to another. Connectors include gussets made of sheet metal or wood stud sections. The ends of the beams may be modified to form joints which are used to connect two beams together or to connect the beam to another construction material. Brackets formed from strips of sheet steel or other metal are bent to conform to outer surfaces of the beams or other construction materials are used to attach the beams to other beams or other construction materials. Fasteners or adhesive may be used to firmly attach the joints, connectors and/or brackets to the beams and construction materials.

Claims

1 . A lightweight metal construction system comprising: a plurality of beams (252,253;404,406;450,452), each beam formed from sheet metal as a triangular tube having a base and two sides and two wings, one wing corresponding to each side, extending from an apex of the triangular tube, the wing having a height substantially less than a height of the side, the beam having a beam length and being openable between the two wings; a plurality of connectors (248,400) for connecting two beams
(252,253;404,406;450,452) of the plurality of beams together and to a construction material (264;408), each connector having a first portion (250;402) comprising a strip of sheet metal for connecting the two beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) together when the two beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) are disposed opposite each other with their respective apexes facing together, the first portion (250;402) being parallel to and abutting the wings of the two beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) and a second portion (257,258;410,41 2) comprising at least one sheet metal tab (257,258;410,41 2) extending away from the first portion (250;402) so that when the connector is attached to the two beams (252,253;404,406;452,452), the at least one tab (257,258;410,41 2) extends beyond an end of each of the two beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) so that when the ends of the two beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) are abutted against a first side of the construction material (264;408) and the at least one tab (257,258;410,412) is bent so that the at least a portion of the at least one tab (257,258;410,412) is flush with a second side of the construction material (264;408); and a plurality of fastening means for fastening the connectors (248;400) to the construction material (264;408) and to the plurality of beams (252,253;404,406;450,452); wherein the plurality of beams (252,253;404,406;450,452) and the construction material (264;408) are attached together so that spaces exist between the plurality of beams (252,253;404,406) and the construction material (264;408) except at a connection point.
2. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the at least one tab (257,258) extends in a plane parallel to the two wings.

A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the at least one tab (257,258) is adapted for mating with a slot formed in the construction material (264), wherein the at least one tab (257,258) is inserted through the slot on a first side of the construction material (264) and is bent so that the at least one tab (257,258) is flush with a second side (266) of the construction material (264).
4. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the connector has two tabs (257,258;410,412) and the two tabs (257,258;410,41 2) are bent in opposing directions.
5. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 4 characterized in that the two tabs (410,41 2) are bent toward each other.
6. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 4 characterized in that the two tabs (257,258) are bent away from each other.
7. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the at least one tab (257,258;41 0,41 2) has a hole (268, 269;41 8,420) therethrough for facilitating placement of a fastening means of the plurality.
8. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the second portion of the connector abuts the base of each of the two beams (404,406) and the at least one tab (410,41 2) extends in a plane parallel to the base.
9. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the first portion (250;402) of the connector is formed as a parallelogram.
1 0. A lightweight metal construction system as in claim 1 characterized in that the two beams (450,452) are formed from a single piece of sheet metal so that they are pre-joined in a parallel relationship to each other.
