Abstract

A method for identification marking objects so that they may later be recognised should they be stolen, damaged, destroyed or modified. The method comprises using a number of recognition elements, i.e. a visible code such as a so-called INSEE code provided on the object to identify its owner, and an electronic code different from the above-mentioned code and characterised in that it is randomly and permanently determined at the industrial production stage, whereafter it may no longer be tampered with.

Description

The present invention relates to the identification of an object, the recognition of all its characteristics with a view to its subsequent recognition among other objects. Of its irrefutable authentication, but also of its restitution in its original state in the event that this object would be degraded or altered.
La mise au point du marquage d'identification selon l'invention a été motivée par plusieurs facteurs .The development of the identification marking according to the invention was motivated by several factors.
First some figures. According to UNESCO and the United States Department of State, theft of art works represents more than 4 billion dollars per year. This traffic constitutes a very serious damage for the heritage. of the countries concerned; moreover, this market is experiencing regular growth because stolen objects always find a buyer in good or bad faith.
In good faith if the customer buys in a normal commercial channel and in doing so he has little means of verifying the origin of his purchase, in bad faith for the buyer who knowingly wishes to sell stolen goods by realizing at passing a substantial added value.
It should be noted that the disparity of laws concerning the concealment of stolen objects in a certain way can favor this traffic. Indeed if the crime of concealment is imprescriptible in France it is not the same in Spain where is only five years old, only two years old in Japan. So an object "frozen" for a certain time can be put back on the market.
Another observation more than 80% of the objects are stolen from individuals, most often the victims of theft have no information as to the objects that were stolen from them, if they have photographs they are of uneven quality and very often stored in near the stolen object .... If many objects are stolen, many also are found but it is very difficult without an identification system to "go back" to the rightful owner.
For certain objects, such as musical instruments, recent experience has shown that it is sometimes very difficult to recognize one's property among identical objects, even for a professional. By comparison, many people pay from 1000 to 1500 FF to mark the windows of cars which whatever happens will be promised for demolition in the 15 years which follow but have no documentation on their personal objects which are often unique, charged with affective or real value.
In view of all this data, we have developed an elaborate identification marking system that is simple to implement, dissuasive, inexpensive, durable, confidential and of course effective. This system is made up of several elements which complement, confirm but can be effective even if one or more of them were to be damaged or even destroyed. The first of these elements is a photographic and or video file on which appear the maximum of details which will be as many potential signatures for the research or the authentication of the object.
The second of these elements is a precise technical file on which will be noted the general characteristics of the object such dimensions.style, materials used, general condition .traces of deterioration or restoration.
The third element concerns the identification of the owner of the object since it is a marking on the same object of a code which is personal to him for example the INSEE code more commonly called "social security code". .This visible code will be affixed in different ways depending on the type of materials that make up the object .For single-block wooden objects (statues, architectural elements, etc.), marking should be done in one place which does not affect the appearance or the structure of the object, either below or behind the object if it is presented pressed against a support. For wooden objects made up of several elements, such as for example furniture, it will be advisable to affix the mark on the greatest possible number of parts constituting this object and this in order to make it very difficult or even impossible to "make up" this one. In this case also it will be necessary to respect the aspect of the object as well as its structure.
In these two cases as well as in the case of materials capable of receiving a marking of pyrography type, the operation will be carried out by a bronze matrix bearing movable characters manufactured according to a single model and "deposited", the whole being worn at temperature by a base heated by electrical resistances
The location of these marks will be indicated precisely in the technical file in order to identify possible attempts at "makeup" or destruction
For objects that cannot receive a hot engraving (stone, metal, glass, etc.), an electric wheel with a diamond point will be used, with which the chosen code will be reproduced, while being careful not to detract from the appearance and to the structure of the object.
For textile-type objects, leathers etc., which cannot receive the engraving, an ink or a resin of "sympathetic" type detectable using appropriate devices (wood lamp, etc.) will be used. The code selected for this type of marking offers several important advantages, first of all it is not a creation since each citizen has his own and uses it, then the file also exists and it can only be consulted by the services authorized officials which offers an additional guarantee of confidentiality and duration over time.
The last element of this identification system consists in the introduction or the affixing of a very small element carrying a locatable and readable code at a distance, different from that used and described previously and this to hinder or even prevent any attempted fraud. This type of electronic implant includes a code-carrying chip and a transmitting antenna.
The implants used are of several types, for objects capable of being drilled (wood, stone, metal or other) we will use cartridge type implants (Length 8 mm Diameter approximately 2.5 mm) which will be inserted in a small hole made using a precision drill, the implantation of the implant will be followed by that of a tempered glass decoy, in order to hinder a possible attempt to destroy the implant. orifice will be masked with a material having the aspect of the pierced object thus making its location impossible with the naked eye.
For objects that cannot be pierced, use ultra flat implants (circular shape Diameter 18 to 25 mm Thickness 0.2 mm) which can be glued inside objects (example musical instruments) or inserted into an existing slot or made (example picture frames. Their flexible structure allows them to be sewn, affixed on non-planar shapes, they can also be covered with any type of coating and this in order to conceal their location. All the types of implants used are of electronic type, their reading is made posible by the single passage in their proximity of an adapted reader of small dimension (it takes in a pocket), autonomous which also has a direct computer connection. The code mentioned on each implant is unique and cannot be forged. In addition, these implants are of the passive type, that is to say that they do not require an energy source, the only energy allowing the reading being provided by the reading device, the lifetime of these implants is in relation with the lifespan of objects, that is to say very long, they resist heat, humidity and common acid products.
HISTORIQUEHISTORICAL
Most of the existing identification systems listed did not achieve the expected success for several reasons. The majority of them involved the adoption of a particular coding known only to insiders, more troublesome it forced the "client" to entrust to a private file information of a confidential nature since it concerns his heritage; very often he also had to participate financially in the maintenance of these files. Furthermore, the security of these files is not an absolute thing and the connections between these "private" files and research services are not always obvious. Finally, the cost of these systems reserved their use for very high-value objects. More worrying perhaps, the very long term duration of these private companies files, especially if we consider the average duration of the objects constituting a heritage; what then to say of a marking system if the structure which alone can handle it disappeared? The identification marking system according to the invention constitutes an important aid in the fight against theft and trafficking in works of art but also for the search, authentication and restitution or even restoration of these objects in the extent to which precise documentation files are almost non-existent in this area except for museum objects which makes the work of research services more difficult and easier that of criminals. The combination of elements can only correspond to a single object which makes makeup practically impossible. IT is durable, simple, confidential, developed since it is based on several elements which complement and confirm themselves confidential since the client is the client. sole holder of his or her files that he does not entrust to others except during theft or disaster.
A veritable "identity card for the object", the marking according to the invention will soon be obvious to those who want to protect their heritage from vandalism constituted by the theft and trafficking in works of art.
As soon as the theft or the disaster is noted the owner can communicate to the research services precise elements which can be thus disseminated very quickly. For the event of disaster the marking file will be very useful for the restoration or the compensation of objects
The stolen object is identified thanks to the photographic file among other objects already found; in this case, the various elements of the marking system according to the invention, which are the technical file, visible marking and electronic marking, will then come without appeal to confirm the first diagnosis (problem of similar objects or small series resolved). 3) An object or a batch of objects is discovered during roadside checks, searches or other interceptions, the presence of markings will awaken attention and allow, by simple computer consultation, to trace back to the owner of the code written on the object.
The object is found but the visible markings have been hidden or destroyed. We then have the technical, photographic or video file, precise of which all the details will be as many potential signatures, moreover the location of the markings being indicated on the file traces of "makeup" will be easily identifiable. Ultimate proof of electronic marking which direct reading will confirm fraudulent handling.
The object is found but the new owner has replaced the original marking with his, he will then have to explain the presence of the secret code of the electronic marking which can only correspond with one type of marking visible.
6)Un particulier ou un commerçant se trouve en possession d'un objet portant un marquage selon l'invention, il lui suffit simplement d'interroger le fichier central d'objets volés par le biais de la gendarmerie la plus proche .6) An individual or a trader is in possession of an object bearing a marking according to the invention, it is sufficient for him to simply interrogate the central file of stolen objects through the nearest gendarmerie.
7) Pour le cas ou l'objet ne serait pas retrouvé au bout d'un certain temps, le dossier d'identification permettrait une indemnisation juste et plus facile à établir .7) In the event that the object is not found after a certain time, the identification file would allow fair compensation and be easier to establish.
Thus the more complete system according to the invention offers the essential advantage of not requiring the creation of a special file since the data of the files according to the invention are kept by the owner who only communicates them to the research services. in the event of theft, or to his insurance company. In addition, all the elements are durable and do not require updating, which is always expensive. This system is the only one which preserves confidentiality and allows efficient search, rapid and irrefutable authentication. and in the same way a restitution of the objects found. Its development was carried out in collaboration with the research brigades of the French police and gendarmerie, customs, INTERPOL, insurance companies, many individuals sensitized by the problem of theft and trafficking in art objects. Their remarks and criticisms were very useful in obtaining a system as complete and as simple to use.
