Definitions
- This invention relates to a method for processing scrap plastics materials, in particular a method to be implemented on an apparatus constituting an automatic supply, extrusion, and molding line for a composite mainly or entirely made up of scrap and even waste materials, lo Background Art
- a primary object of the invention is to allow re-utilization of non-fresh materials coming wholly or in part from:
- machining waste and industrial processing waste such as chips and chunks of wood or shake, or fabric cuttings, polishing dust, paint smudge and dust;
- plastics - more or less finely comminuted plastics to micron size, and in general assorted plastics, or plastics slightly contaminated with other plastics or impurities, as delivered from the sorted collection of city and industrial waste.
- thermoplastic materials hereinafter referred to as "composites” for brevity, so long as they contain, either originally or by admixture, a sufficient amount of a polyolefine-based polymer (mostly PE and PP), irrespective of whether regenerated, crushed, or fresh, to function as a binding mass, and that it is known to fill plastics with
- a polyolefine-based polymer mostly PE and PP
- the main problem to be solved is to provide a relatively simple method of converting the plastics waste into articles of manufacture or semi-finished products.
- the PE or PP base should not enter for more than 50%, perhaps 40%, of the total of the composite constituents, the remainder is bound to be inerts of some sort.
- Inert means here a material which only or mainly partakes in the composite with its physical characteristics (e.g., wood, which imparts stiffness, lightweight, machinability, nailing ability, etc.). Interacting is said of a material, such as paint waste, which mainly reacts chemically to alter the characteristics of the composite polyurethane paint tends to cause the composite to swell making it more compliant,
- the characteristics of the plastics scrap material command specific processing methods and equipment that, if not specialized, have at least been modified to accept this kind of material for processing.
- the technique was one of mixing together the plastics, wood and optional additives and forcing them through an extruder.
- the plastics and wood must be reduced to a uniform particle size and provided in highly precise proportions, and above all, the materials used had to be in a pure state. Disclosure of the Invention
- the invention concerns a method for utilizing a material mainly or entirely of waste origin which has varying apparent volume and physical shapes, may have a moisture content and include large amounts of inerts, so as to yield semi-finished and/or
- the method of this invention is related to the manufacture on a continuous basis of semi-finished and/or finished composite thermoplastic products, from materials having varying characteristics, wherein the material characteristics do not affect the continuous manufacture of the end product
- the method, and the lo apparatus for implementing it are self-adjusting in the respect of many of their functions, to accommodate the varying characteristics of the input material, and can adjust themselves for the material while keeping constant the manufacturing process for the end product
- waste which comprises the primary inert (wood, for example) to a crusher and then to a refining mill, so as to reduce the particle size of the 0 material to no more than 6-7mm;
- step 4 picking up, when required for step 5, the mixture produced in step 3 to introduce it into an extruder for melting, and subsequently granulating it and delivering the resultant granulate (compounded granulate) to respective storage silos,
- step 30 5 picking up, from dedicated silos, a plastics binder composed of a regenerated and/or waste and/or fresh polyolefine-based thermoplastic material, and optionally the compounded granulate obtained in steps 3 and 4, and picking up the ground material of step 1 , to introduce them into separate inlets of an extruder (main extruder or molding line extruder) for melting, and delivering a
- the method illustrated schematically by steps 1 to 1 1 above, obviously comprises a whole set of additional operations relating to the material deferrization to safeguard the apparatus wherein the composite is to be used and the drying off of wet constituents, as well as to the removal and extraction of any volatile matter and gases released from the operations being carried out, as explained in greater detail hereinafter
- the whole process is run under control by one or more computerized control units and their programs to handle the individual process steps and the machines on which they are carried out, which programs allow the machines, as functionally interlinked for providing a continuous cycle production line, to perform their functions and complete the process in a substantially automatic manner.
- the method of this invention is characterized in that it comprises the automatic programmed performance of successive interlinked operations and treatments which proceed from waste "raw” materials from different industrial processes, as optionally supplemented with fresh or regenerated materials, and result in semi-finished and/or finished products being produced through a cycle which is self-feeding and self- managing and capable of adjusting itself for the characteristics and amounts of material issuing from an extruder in view of its molding, in order to automatically allow the continuous constant running of the molding of articles from a composite thermoplastic material produced on the line and fed in pre-formed portions to a molding press provided with a number of even different separate molds.
- the method of this invention comprises the following steps: a) storing, supplying, refining and ensiling the primary inert filler (such as ./waste from the woodworking industry), b) storing, picking up, and delivering to daylong silos a plastics binder consisting of a regenerated and/or waste and/or fresh polyolefine-based thermoplastic material, c) optionally adding, to said plastics, a granulate from an inertizing cycle for inert or interacting scrap materials having different qualities, physical shapes, and in different amounts from the primary inert, as applied locally or by external sources, d) feeding in metered amounts the plastics binder under b) or c) or both, if necessary in an additivated form, into a first inlet of an extruder preferably, but not exlusively, of the type having two counter-rotating screws, for the melting step, e) feeding the crushed, refined and dried primary inert filler into a second inlet of the primary in
- this second belt conveyor Upon receiving the material portion for weighing, this second belt conveyor is stopped, whereas the first conveyor, which has resumed its speed (VI ) upon discharging the severed material portion, will continue to convey the material being extruded to the cutter.
- the third belt conveyor starts at the same speed as the maximum speed of the first conveyor (V2) to receive the weighed piece from the second conveyor, which second conveyor, on completion of the weighing operation, will discharge the weighed piece onto said third conveyor for transferring it to an available mold, at disposal of the loading lift carrier. Where the piece is non-conformant, it is discharged onto a dedicated conveyor and the concerned information is passed to the cutter through the computerized control unit which will change the cutting rate.
- the cutting rate is determined according to the relation of the weight measurement of the already portioned material to the information about the pressure of the material being melted and pre-formed through the extruder and the extrusion head, respectively, by comparing and correlating the information from the pressure sensors provided.
- the method of this invention can be implemented in two different ways, according to necessity:
