Definitions

  • the invention relates to a lining element for lining inside walls and ceilings.
  • the characteristic features of the inventions appear in claim 1.
  • the lining element according to the invention is particularly designed for lining the walls and ceilings of ship cabins but naturally the element suits to all kinds of interiors.
  • the element is fire resisting, light yet hard with good insulating properties.
  • the manufacturing costs of the element are low.
  • When provided with suitable side section strips, its installation on the building site is fast and simple.
  • Fig. 1 shows the structure of a lining element according to the invention
  • Fig. 2 shows attachment of elements of Fig. 1 to each other according to one embodiment
  • Fig. 3 shows the cross-section of a joint along the line A-A of Fig. 2 before knocking down the wedge strip in its place
  • Fig. 4 shows the joint of Fig. 3 after knocking down the wedge strip in its place.
  • Fig. 1 shows the structure of a lining element according to the invention.
  • the body 10 of the element comprises a perforated support plate 15 which has an area corresponding to that of the element and which is, at the side edges of the element, in contact with the side sections 13 and 14 of the element whereby the element can be attached to the base to be lined and whereby the adjacent lining elements are attached to each other.
  • An insulating layer 11, 12, respectively, has been attached to both sides of the supporting plate 15.
  • the supporting plate is preferably a kind of steel net or a steel slab provided with large holes 16.
  • the support plate is, at the side edges of the element, bent so as to form side sections 13 and 14 of the element so that the support plate and the side sections make a jointless contact with each other.
  • the lining element is manufactured by hot pressing mineral wool saturated with phenolic resin to both sides of the support plate 15. Due to the phenolic resin the layer of mineral wool adheres fast to the support plate. Within the holes 16 the layers 11 and 12 of mineral wool on both sides of the support plate stick to each other. Hence a rigid structure is obtained which also has a good insulating property.
  • the surface of the element facing the room is suitably provided with a coating layer 17 which may be fabric, foil or the like.
  • the coating layer may be attached right in the hot pressing stage of the element.
  • the coating layer 17 may also, as shown in the figure, cover the edges of the element to provide a neat joint between the elements.
  • the side sections 13, 14 of the element may be any kind of sections, for example those sections described in the Finnish published patent application FI 93250.
  • the support plate 15 is bent into an L-section 13 at one of its edges and into a Z-section at its other edge 14 in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
  • Adjacent elements provided with such sections can be easily attached to each other in the way indicated in Figs. 2 - 4.
  • Fig. 2 shows installation of the elements next to each other seen from the end.
  • Part 21 of the L- section and part 22 of the Z-section of the element, which come into contact with each other when the elements are placed side by side, are provided with holes at specific intervals from each other along the length of the side section of the element (these details appear in Figs. 3 and 4).
  • the holes of both parts 21 and 22 come opposite to each other when the elements are placed side by side
  • a U- shaped tongue strip 30 Against the L-section is attached a U- shaped tongue strip 30, the middle part of the U-shaped section being provided along the length of the strip with tongues 32 which are essentially parallel with the side edge of the element.
  • the tongues are designed and fitted so as to go through both holes of the edge section parts 21 and 22 placed against each other.
  • a wedge strip 40 having the shape of a U-section is temporarily attached against the Z-section, the middle part of the U-section being provided with holes over the length of the strip. These holes are so designed and dimensioned that the tongues 32 go through the holes of the wedge strip in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
  • the edges 41 of the holes go into the pockets 33 formed by the tongues 32 when the wedge strip 40 is knocked in its place towards the open pockets 33.
  • the adjacent lining elements attach firmly to each other along the edges of the elements.
  • the tongue strip can be attached to the L- section in the building site but installation is sped up if the strip is pre-attached to the L-section of the element already in the factory. To obtain a joint between the elements which is as tight as possible, the tongue strip must be firmly attached to the L-section.
  • the wedge strip cannot be permanently fixed to the Z-section in the factory because installation requires that the strip can be moved in the longitudinal direction of the element.
  • the wedge strip is temporarily attached against the Z-section by slight gluing or by other means.
  • the wedge strip may be attached to the Z-section of the element in the manner shown in Fig. 3. During installation the wedge strip is moved in the direction of the arrow to accomplish interlocking (Fig. 4).
