Abstract
A passive transponder may be encoded with a number or code up to 64 binary bits and then associated with or mounted to virtually any living tissue implant for implantation in a human. After implantation, the transponder's code may be conveniently read with a hand held electromagnetic reader which may merely be brought within proximity of the transponder. The encoded transponder may thus be read in a non-invasive procedure and without the use of any sophisticated or potentially harmful medical equipment or technology such as X-ray. The information encoded in the transponder may correspond to patient demographics and implant data to aid in tracking the implant's progress and use for medical as well as legal reasons. The living tissue can be living organ from a donor transplanted into a recipient patient.
Claims
AMENDED CLAIMS

9. The implant of Claim 8 wherein said transponder has means for its identifier to be read remotely.
10. The implant of Claim 9 wherein said transponder has means for its identifier to be read electro agnetically.
11. The implant of Claim 10 wherein said transponder has means for being energized by a remote reader thereby obviating a need for a battery to be contained in said transponder.
12. The implant of Claim 11 wherein said transponder has means for being encoded with a number selected from within the range of 0 to 64 bits, binary.
13. The implant of Claims 8 wherein said transponder is mounted within the profile of said implant.
14. The implant of Claim 8 wherein said prosthesis is a totally living tissue implant.
15. A method for rendering an implant identifiable, said implant being comprised at least in part of living tissue and suitable for being implanted contemporaneously with a transponder in a human, said method comprising the steps of: associating said transponder with the implant, and encoding said transponder with a unique tag so that said transponder may be readily identified.
16. The method of Claim 15 wherein the associating step further comprises the step of physically securing said transponder to said implant so that said implant and transponder are suitable for being implanted together and in physical proximity with each other.
17. The method of Claim 15 wherein the step of associating includes the step of affixing the transponder to the implant.
18. A method for rendering a prosthesis identifiable, said prosthesis being suitable for being
implanted contemporaneously with a transponder in a human, said method comprising the steps of: associating said transponder with the prosthesis, and encoding said transponder with a unique tag so that said transponder may be readily identified.
19. The method of Claim 18 wherein the associating step further comprises the step of physically securing said transponder to said prosthesis so that said prosthesis and transponder are implanted together and in physical proximity with each other.
20. The method of Claim 18 wherein the step of associating includes the step of affixing the transponder to the prosthesis.
