Definitions

  • This invention relates to an adjustable support device used for levelling a ladder, table or the like structure and in particular to a device which enables ladders to be erected on uneven ground or stairwells.
  • the simplest and most commonly used method of levelling the feet of a ladder is to place a solid object with an even surface, such as a brick under the lowermost foot of the ladder. While this method can be effective, it is often difficult to find objects of the correct thickness to satisfactorily level the feet of the ladder to minimise the deviation of the ladder from the vertical. Consequently to raise the foot of the ladder to the correct level, the support object is generally a combination of objects of varying thickness and shape which happen to be available at the time. Since the support made from a combination of objects are not held together, it represents a potentially unstable foundation.
  • an adjustable support device for a ladder including a latch housing securable to a stile of a ladder and having a longitudinal recess, an extendible leg slidable within said longitudinal recess having at least one notch therein and a distal end extending beyond said stile, a latch means engageable with the at least one notch in the extendible leg to prevent longitudinal movement of said distal end towards said latch housing, and a longitudinally slidable release member for disengaging said latch means from said at least one notch in said extendible leg.

  • an adjustable support device 1 in accordance with an embodiment of the invention is shown secured to a stile 2 of a ladder.
