Definitions
- This invention relates to an adjustable support device used for levelling a ladder, table or the like structure and in particular to a device which enables ladders to be erected on uneven ground or stairwells.
- the simplest and most commonly used method of levelling the feet of a ladder is to place a solid object with an even surface, such as a brick under the lowermost foot of the ladder. While this method can be effective, it is often difficult to find objects of the correct thickness to satisfactorily level the feet of the ladder to minimise the deviation of the ladder from the vertical. Consequently to raise the foot of the ladder to the correct level, the support object is generally a combination of objects of varying thickness and shape which happen to be available at the time. Since the support made from a combination of objects are not held together, it represents a potentially unstable foundation.
- an adjustable support device for a ladder including a latch housing securable to a stile of a ladder and having a longitudinal recess, an extendible leg slidable within said longitudinal recess having at least one notch therein and a distal end extending beyond said stile, a latch means engageable with the at least one notch in the extendible leg to prevent longitudinal movement of said distal end towards said latch housing, and a longitudinally slidable release member for disengaging said latch means from said at least one notch in said extendible leg.
- the levelling device in a accordance with the invention is preferably secured to the stile of a ladder by a mounting means such as a mounting plate to the lowermost end of the stile preferably with a foot at the distal end of extendible leg extending beyond the end of the stile.
- the engagement of the latch means with the at least one notch in the extendible leg at least prevents movement of foot towards the stile and preferably prevents longitudinal movement of the leg relative to the latch housing.
- the latch housing preferably is provided with a latch guide within which the latch means is able to move from an engaged position with the extendible leg to a disengaged position.
- the latch means is a pawl pivotally mounted on the release member. The pivot for the pawl preferably extends through the pivot mounting on the release member and slidably engages the latch housing.
- the latch guide is preferably shaped such that longitudinal movement of the release member relative to the housing causes the pawl to move within the latch guide between engagement and disengagement with the extendible leg as it pivots on the release member.
- the disengaging sliding movement of the release member is towards the distal end of the extendible leg.
- the recess in the latch housing is a longitudinal channel having a triangular cross-section and the latch guide is a pair of slots in the walls of the channel, the top of the slots corresponding to the disengaged position of the pawl.

- an adjustable support device 1 in accordance with an embodiment of the invention is shown secured to a stile 2 of a ladder.
- the adjustable support device 1 includes a latch housing 3 having a recess 4 (shown in Figure 6) for the slidable engagement of extendible leg 5.
- the extendible leg has a foot 6 secured to the base thereof and end stops in the form of upturned flanges 7,8 to prevent travel of the extendible leg when positioned on the stile 2 beyond the latch housing 3.
- the latch housing may be secured to a stile 2 by mounting means shown as mounting plate 19.
- a return spring 13 is provided with one end 13a connected to the extendible leg 5 near the foot and the other end 136 connected to the stile of the ladder.
- the recess 4 is preferably triangular shaped in cross-section to correspond with the preferred sectional shape of the extendible leg 5.
- the adjustable leg 5 is provided with at least one but preferably a plurality of equally spaced notches 9 to engage a latch means on the latch housing.
- the preferred spacing of the notches is approximately 12'/2mm.
- the latch means includes a release member 10 slidably mounted on the latch housing 3.
- a pawl 11 is pivotally mounted on the release member 10 and is able to move within a latch guide 12 in the latch housing 3 to engage at least one of the plurality of notches 9 in the adjustable leg 5.
- the latch guide is preferably an angled slot cut into the side of the latch housing where the triangular recess 4 is formed.
- the release member is preferably mounted on the latch housing by means of a bend lug retainer 14a which moves within a retaining slot 14 formed in the latch housing.
- the pawl 11 When the pawl 11 is in the bottom of the angle slot 12, it spans a portion of the recess 4 and is able to engage one of the plurality notches 9 of the extendible leg 5.
- the pawl 11 is preferably biased by spring 15 secured to the latch housing to retain the pawl in the end of the slot and hence in the position which engages one of the plurality of notches in the extendible leg 5.
- the pawl is disengaged from the notch in the extendible leg by movement of the release member 10 towards the distal end of the extendible leg 5. Consequently, the release member 10 is biased into a position away from the foot of the extendible leg 5 and when the release member 10 is in this position, the pawl is in the engaged position with one of the notches 9 in the extendible leg 5.
- the latch guide preferably slopes upwardly so that the biased position for the pawl is spanning a portion of the recess 4 as shown in Figure 6.
- the extendible leg 5 is extended to the appropriate length to orient the ladder vertically.
- a nylon bearing 16 may be provided between the extendible leg and the mounting plate 19 to facilitate a smoother sliding action.
- the pivot for the pawl may extend through the sides of the release member 10 and engage a slidable mounting 17 in the latch housing.
- a second pawl may be mounted on the latch housing in a similar way to the pawl shown in the drawings.
