Definitions

  • This invention relates to the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy.
  • the linear motion of a body, Mg is converted into rotory motion which drives an electrical generator / Dynamo.
  • Hydroelectric plants use water, falling under gravity through a height to rotate turbines which are coupled to alternators. Thus water is essential for the operation of a hydro electric plant. These plants also have a high cost of Civil Engineering works and therefore the capital cost per kilowatt is considerably high.
  • This invention uses a body of mass, Mg, falling under gravity to drive an alternator, through a train of gears.
  • the body, Mg may be of any suitable material for example, a sack of sand, a block of metal, a drumfull of water, a block of stone or any material with an appreciable mass.
  • the advantageous effects include:
  • the device is also advantageously free from air pollution due to smoke and exhaust gases.
  • the invention can be utilized as a permanent primary power source for industry, homes, etc replacing or bypassing existing grid supply and therefore any tariff payments to power supply companies etc.
  • an industrial plant or factory or home would generate its own electrical power.
  • the device would provide such a plant or factory or home with free electrical energy since the main costs involved are the initial cost of the device and the maintenance costs.
  • the device can be utilized also as a primary mobile power source for camper vans, submarines, independent mobile military units etc.
  • the device can be located in sealed chambers as it does not require air intake and exhaust shafts.
  • the device can be advantageous in giving on-the-spot electrical power in remote and difficult terrain and on the and on sites of natural and man made disasters where electrical power is required urgently without the logistical problems of long supply lines in whatever conditions of weather, day or night. Again because of the abundance and flexibility of the nature of the body, Mg, does not have to be ferried from point to point in the case of mobile power pack; it may be present at the second point. MODE OF CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
  • the device is made of various components of suitable material.
  • the mass of body, Mg may be of any material such as a block of metal, a sack of cement, a block of stone, concrete, a sack of sand or any material of appreciable mass.
  • the body, Mg is placed on a base plate, Lb, which is attached to and moves in tandem with the bearing plate, Bt. Both the bearing plate, Bt, and the base plate, Lb, have holes drilled in them which permit them to slide up and down the rods, Ro.
  • Thrust ball bearings, Tb are fitted to each of the bearing plates at top and bottom. The Thrust bearing, Tb, permit the worm gear, SW, to be inserted into each bearing plate, Bt, and for the rotation of the worm gear, SW.
  • worm gear moves in two ways, viz;
  • the worm wheel, WH is fixed to the shaft, Shi and the teeth of the worm wheel, WH, are meshed with the teeth of the worm gear, SW, and because the shaft, Shi, although revolving with the worm wheel, Wh, does not change position, then the rotation of the worm gear, SW, and its downward or upward motion will cause the worm wheel, WH, to rotate.
  • the result is that the downward or upward motion of the body, Mg, causes both the downward or upward motion of the worm gear, SW, and the rotation of the worm gear, SW, about the two thrust bearings, Tb, and consequently the rotation of the worm wheel, WH, and the Shaft, Shi, and the main sprocket wheel to which they are fixed.
  • the diameter of the worm gear, SW can be made sufficiently large to enable the worm wheel, WH "travel" a maximum distance on the tooth on the worm gear, SW.
  • the rods, Ro are sufficiently long to enable the body, Mg, and therefore the worm gear, SW, move through an appreciable distance.
  • the rods, Ro are fixed to the mounting block, MB, which can be bolted down by the hold down bolts, HD.
  • the rotation of the worm wheel, WH causes the rotation of the main sprocket wheel, Mrl.
  • a sprocket chain is attached to the main sprocket wheel, Mrl and a small sprocket wheel, Sr2 such that the rotation of the main sprocket wheel, Mrl causes the rotation of the small sprocket wheel, Sr2 and its shaft, Sh2 and a large sprocket wheel, Lr2 which is onthe same shaft, Sh2.
  • the large sprocket wheel, Lr2 rotates a small sprocket wheel, Sr3 on the shaft, Sh3 and a large sprocket wheel, Lr3.
  • Large sprocket wheel, Lr3 then moves a small sprocket wheel, Sr4, through a wheel, Lr4 which is on the same shaft. Again through a chain, the motion is transmitted to a small sprocket wheel, Sr5, Shaft, Sh5 and Large Sprocket Wheel, Lr5.
  • a small Sprocket Wheel, Sr6 is fixed to the Shaft of the alternator/ Dynamo such that through a chain, the large Sprocket Wheel, Lr5 rotates the small Sprocket wheel, Sr6 and therefore the Alternator/Dynamo.
  • the intention of the gearing system of sprocket wheels and chains is to raise the speed of rotation to a suitable level to rotate the Alternator/ Dynamo. The result is the production of electrical power by the rotating Alternator/Dynamo.
  • the number of sprocket wheels need not be con ⁇ fined and can be reduced or increased to attain the required speed of rotation of the dynamo/alternator.
  • the sprocket wheels and chains can be replaced with meshing spur gears.
