Definitions

  • the invention relates to a gas safety stem and more particularly to a safety stem for a gas regulator, incorporating a safety valve.
  • High pressure gas cylinders are often used in industry and elsewhere. They can however be dangerous and lead to industrial accidents. For example, if an accident occurs and the regulator is smashed off the cylinder (for example, the cylinder may fall over) , the cylinder becomes a missile due to the escaping gas. Also there is a risk of explosion from the gas.
  • the invention provides a safety stem adapted to be attached directly or indirectly between a gas cylinder and a regulator of the gas cylinder, the safety stem adapted to shut off a flow of gas from the cylinder to the regulator when the regulator is smashed off the cylinder, regardless of the pressure differential between the cylinder interior and the external atmosphere.
  • the safety stem comprises a retaining means adapted to prevent a safety valve from closing when the cylinder is in its normal position prior to an accident.

  • the retaining means comprises a break point such that on breakage of the retaining means at the break point, the retaining means is released from the safety stem, which in turn releases the biasing means which in turn forces the safety valve closed, preventing gas flow from the cylinder into the channel.
