Definitions
- the present invention relates to carrier devices primarily for containers known as "aseptic bricks".
- containers are generally parallelepiped in shape and are produced in various sizes and proportions. They are generally used as containers for liquids, but not necessarily.
- Other parallelepiped containers could also be used with the invention, such as rectangular cartons and boxes. Throughout the specification all containers will simply be referred to as aseptic bricks.
- a paperboard carrier device for aseptic bricks comprising a top panel arrangement and a base panel arrangement linked by a connecting panel arrangement whereby in use a plurality of aseptic bricks are arranged on the device with the externally visible bricks being adhesively secured to at least two of said panel arrangements.
- the device is folded from a single piece of paperboard, the panel arrangements being hingedly connected together and also the aseptic bricks in use are adhesively secured to the top and base panel arrangements.
- the connecting panel arrangement comprises a single connecting panel hingedly connected to a single top panel arrangement and a single base panel arrangement.
- the connecting panel incorporates a handle portion and the top panel arrangement comprises a single panel and the base panel arrangement comprises a single panel.
- the handle portion comprises a first handle panel extending from said interconnecting panel and a second handle panel hingedly connected to the first and to the top panel which also incorporates a portion cut from said second handle panel such that when the two handle portions are folded together said cut portion of the top panel passes through an opening in the first handle panel.
- said base panel incorporates a section cut from the interconnecting panel such that the base panel extends on both sides of the hinge line between the base and interconnecting panel.
- the base panel arrangement is hingedly connected to two parallel interconnecting panels and incorporates portions cut from the interconnecting panels so as to extend on both sides of each hinge line with the interconnecting panels.
- the interconnecting panels are hingedly connected to the top panel arrangement which incorporates one or more handle panels and each interconnecting panel is hingedly connected to a top a panel.
- each top panel has a handle panel hingedly connected thereto, the handle panels cooperating to constitute a handle.
- the two handle panels are adhesively secured to each other and one of the top panels incorporate a portion cut from its associated handle panel which portion extends through an aperture in the other handle panel and is adhesively secured to the other top panel.
- the two handle panels are hingedly connected to each other along a line parallel to the hinge lines with the respective top panels.
- the handles may fold flat against the top of the device for palletisation purposes. The handles may even be secured in the folded position using adhesive.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an unloaded carrier device according to the present invention
- Figure 2 is a different perspective view of the device of figure 1 in a loaded condition
- Figure 3 is a view of the blank used to make the device of figure 1 ,
- Figure 4 is a perspective view of another embodiment of unloaded carrier device according to the present invention
- Figure 5 is a different perspective view of the device of figure 4 in a loaded condition
- Figure 6 is a view of the blank used to make the device of figure 4 .
- Figure 7 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of unloaded carrier device according to the present invention.
- Figure 8 is a different perspective view of the device of figure 7 in a loaded condition
- Figure 9 is a view of the blank used to make the device of figure 7.
- the drawings show carrier devices 10, 110, 210 for holding together a number of aseptic bricks 11.
- the bricks can be made in a great number of sizes and proportions and so simple modifications to the dimensions of the devices can be made to accommodate different bricks in different numerical combinations.
- FIG. 1 to 3 there is shown a device 10 made from a paperboard blank 12 for carrying six bricks.
- the device 10 has a base panel 13 which is hingedly connected along fold 14 to an interconnecting panel 15 from which a portion 16 of the base panel 13 is cut.
- the base panel 13 also has lengthwise extending projections 17 at the free end of portion 16.
- the top end of the interconnecting panel 15 is hingedly connected along fold 18 to a first handle panel 19 which in turn is hingedly connected along fold 20 to a second handle panel 21.
- a top panel 22 is hingedly connected along fold 23 to the second handle panel 21 and a portion 24 of the top panel 22 is cut from said handle panel 21.
- An aperture 25 is also cut in the first handle panel 19, the aperture 25 having an edge extending along the fold 18.
- the base panel 13 is folded so as to be perpendicular to the interconnecting panel 15.
- the two handle panels 19, 21 are folded together such that the portion 24 of the top panel 22 extends through the aperture 25 in the first handle panel 19.
- the two handle panels 19, 21 may be secured together in this position by adhesive or other suitable means.
- the device excluding the handle panels, has an assembled condition which is I-shaped when viewed from its ends.
- the handle section can also be folded down against the top of the bricks so as not to projects. In transport the handle section may even be glued down to enable the devices, in use, to be stacked more efficiently.
- Aseptic bricks 11 can be stacked on the base 13 of the device 10, against the interconnecting panel 15 and below the top panel 22.
- the bricks 11 are secured using adhesive to the device, each brick 11 being secured to at least two of the panels.
- the bricks 11 are adhesively secured to the top and base panels 13, 22 but the interconnecting panel 15 can also be used for adhesive.
- the projections 17 of the base panel 13 provide extra area for supporting the bricks 11, but may not be necessary in certain arrangements. For example, with larger bricks II only one brick may be secured on either side of the interconnecting panel 15.
- an adhesive such that when removing a brick 11 the walls of the brick are not damaged by the removal.
- One suitable type of adhesive is known as a peelable adhesive and it has been found that these adhesives can provide a strong enough bond between the paperboard and the bricks, but at the same time becomes detached from the bricks without damaging the bricks.
- Other suitable adhesives will, however, be possible.
- Figures 4 to 6 show a three row device 110 shown as being suitable for three rows of three bricks 11.
- the device 110 has a base panel 113 hingedly connected to two interconnecting panels 115 each in turn connected to a top panel 122. Portions 124, 116 of each top panel 122 and the base panel 113 are cut from the interconnecting panels 115 and again extensions 117 may be provided to increase the area of support provided by the top and base panels.
- Each top panel 122 is hingedly connected to a handle panel 119, 121.
- Handle panel 119 is formed with an aperture 125 through which a portion 134, cut from the handle panel 121, extends when the device 110 is assembled.
- the two handle panels 119, 121 are adhesively secured together and the portion 134 may also be secured adhesively to the other top panel 122. It may prove to be desirable to assemble the device 110 around the bricks 11 in the central row, that is the row extending between the two interconnecting panels 115. Again all the bricks 11 are adhesively secured to the top and base panels 122, 113 although the interconnecting panels 115 could be used for adhesive as well as or in place of one of the top or base panels. It will also be appreciated that the central brick of the 9 brick array need not necessarily be adhesively secured in order to maintain the rigidity of the fully loaded device 110.
- Flaps 140 are also hingedly connected to the handle panels 119, 121 to be bent back to provide extra cushioning for the person carrying the device. Also, as in the previous embodiment the handles can be folded down and adhesively secured in this folded condition if desired.
- the device 210 shown in figures 7 to 9 is very similar to that shown in figures 4 to 6 except that the two handle panels are hingedly connected to each other and the base panel 213 is formed from two sections 250 and 251. Also, the portions 224, 216 of the top panel 222 and base sections 250, 251 cut from the interconnecting panels 215 are not formed with lengthwise extending projections similar to 117 in figures 7 to 9. Again the handle panels 219, 221 may be folded flat.
- the device 210 shown is for a 3 X 3 array of bricks 11 and is best assembled around the central row of bricks. It will be seen that the bricks 11 in this arrangement are orientated differently compared to the arrangement in figures 4 to 6, i.e., the bricks have been rotated through 90° relative to the handles. This is really a matter of design choice.
