Definitions
- Pouch bottle made of two sheets of film, preferably plastic film, joined along the side edges and provided with a foldable end piece, preferably folded inside the pouch, with a sloped, straight-line joint extending from each corner of the base and a certain distance up the sides.
- Packaging pouches are known for example, from French patent No. 2 687 985 and German published patent application No. 20 60 81 2, European published patent application No. 0 345 647, German published patent application No. 41 05 694 and US patent No. 4 669 1 24, of which the method described in French patent No. 2 687 985 is considered to be that most immediately relevant in the present context.
- the pouch is recognised for its usefulness as a refill package for liquid and powdered materials.
- Pouches are also suitable for transport from manufacturer to user since they occupy little space when empty, and are also relatively easy to dispose of after use.
- known packaging pouches suffer from stability problems, either in that they tend to fall over or can be laid only on their sides. Furthermore, they can also be extremely difficult to pour from.
- the purpose of the invention is to provide a packaging pouch of the type described in the introduction above, but affording much greater stability than known types when standing on the base, as well as being easier to pour from.
- This is achieved, in the present invention, by making the pouch bottle of a shape which narrows towards the opening so that it has the appearance of an actual bottle, affording much greater stability while making the bottle easier to pour from insofar as it has an actual neck.
- the pouch is self-sealing insofar as the sides of the neck adhere together, forming a type of lip seal.
- the neck is squeezed slightly to open it. Sealing of the pouch may be improved further by means of a cross strip, preferably attached at an angle to the neck, the top of which may be inserted under the strip when folded.
- the usefulness of the pouch bottle is greatly enhanced by providing the opening with a lock ring and an openable cap, and particularly if the lock ring is provided with a standard thread for attaching spray nozzles and similar devices.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pouch bottle in accordance with the invention
- Fig. 1 , B1 is a further development of the pouch bottle with side and bottom grips, as well as an angular cross strip, seen from the side,
- Fig. 2 shows a pouch bottle with an angular cross strip, under which the folded neck is inserted
- Fig. 3 is a direct side view of the pouch bottle as per Fig. 2,
- Fig. 4 is a further development of the pouch bottle in accordance with the invention, provided with a cap,
- Fig. 5 illustrates the manufacture of a bottle pouch from a folded strip of film
- Fig. 6 shows a lock ring designed for attachment to the pouch bottle, seen directly from above,
- Fig. 7 is a side view of the lock ring
- Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the lock ring
- Fig. 9 is a further development of the lock ring as a lockable ring, seen directly from above,
- Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the lock ring in the secured position
- Fig. 1 1 is a modified version of the lock ring shown in figs. 9 and 10, with a smaller collar and locking tab
- Fig. 12 is a cross-section of a cap designed for screw attachment to a lock ring and provided with an integral sealing ring
- Fig. 13 shows the cap in position on a lock ring
- Fig. 14 is a cross-section of a cap, also provided with a sealing ring which, however, is designed to part from the cap when the latter is unscrewed,
- Fig. 15 shows the cap screwed onto a lock ring
- the pouch bottle manufacturing and filling process described below enables the bottle to stand unaided by itself, thereby making it versatile in use.
- An endless, folded, double sheet of material such as environment-friendly plastic film of a width corresponding to the height of the bottle, the folded side of the sheet being double-folded inward by approx. 2 to 4 cm (depending on the shape, height and base diameter of the bottle), is used for manufacture.
- Each of the folds at the double-folded side of the sheet is welded together in such manner that the welded shape consists of two triangles joined by a line, the combined length of which (triangles and line) corresponds to the diameter of the bottle.
- the double-folded sheet is then welded together in the shape of the finished pouch bottle, with the exception of the neck, which is already fitted with a filling connection.
- the neck is then sealed by welding or provided with a lock ring, which is mounted or welded in position during the same process.
- a new, tightly sealing dispenser/stopper is specified to make the described invention more user-friendly.
- the principle of the closure is such that the stopper is easy to open and close.
- the sealing ring may either be fitted separately or together with the dispenser/stopper with which it is formed or assembled in a single piece.
- the sealing ring separates from the dispenser/stopper when the latter is screwed or unscrewed, and remains clamped in position between the lock ring and pouch bottle even when the dispenser/stopper is unscrewed.
- the sealing ring may be fitted separately, either manually or mechanically, while filling the pouch with carbonated liquids, such as soda water.
- a two-piece, but interconnected lock ring which is largely similar to the lock ring already described but which, in this instance, is made in two parts joined by a 'snap- action mechanism' to facilitate the attachment of particularly thick pouches.
- the two-piece lock ring arrangement can be used only with dispensers which remain attached to the pouch bottle while in use, or together with a special sealing ring which closes the pouch and the top of the two-piece lock ring by means of its top collar. To eliminate inadvertent unscrewing of the dispenser without a sealing ring, the lock ring and dispenser must be provided with the locking system described.
- the actual lock ring consists of:
- a projection which, by virtue of its three-sided shape, comprises, together with the lower edge of the dispenser, a closing mechanism which prevents unintentional unscrewing of the dispenser.
- the elasticity of the projection is such that it can be screwed tightly to the dispenser. The projection can be released and unscrewed from the dispenser only when a strong tug is applied;
- the base of the lock ring shall be provided with a ring (collar), 4 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, which ring shall, however, not be circular, but shall be multi-sided or ribbed.
- ring shall, however, not be circular, but shall be multi-sided or ribbed.
- the bottle is opened simply by tearing off the neck, and is reseated by folding and tucking the neck underneath a plastic strip;
- dispenser In this case, only a few millimetres of the welded end of the neck of the pouch are cut off, the neck is pulled down over the lock ring and a screw-on dispenser/stopper is fitted.
- the necessity of pulling the neck of the pouch bottle over the lock ring may be avoided by pressing the dispenser/stopper over the middle of the neck and securing it by screwing it onto the lock ring.
- the inner sealing ring of the dispenser/stopper is self-releasing and remains seated in the lock ring, providing a permanent connection between it and the pouch bottle.
- the invention has numerous potential applications in almost all industries for packaging products, liquids and dry materials, the type used being distinguished only by the sizes of the lock ring and dosage/dispensing device, liquids requiring smaller openings, while dry materials require slightly larger openings.
- thermos flask the outer wall of which may be made of an insulating material, such as polyurethane or synthetic resin.
- the 'cheapest' version of a thermos flask may consist of a pouch bottle made of insulating double plastic, the idea being that the pouch bottle and its contents, either pre-cooled or pre-heated (for example, in a microwave oven), are placed in the flask, the subsequent procedure being as described for spray bottles.
- the pouch bottle provides a means of protecting the environment, without the need for other aids and while preventing spillage, when used, for example, as an oil can or filler container for oils and lubrication products;
- the pouch bottles may be used as a container for milk and all other drinks products
- cleaning agents including dry materials, such as washing powders, will be easier to handle in terms of application and package closure;
- the pouch bottle can, in a slightly stronger version with a factory-fitted lock ring and a stopper with a self-releasing sealing ring, be used as a soft drinks and soda water bottle, replacing the more energy and resource-intensive PET bottle as a disposable container;
- the pouch bottle may supersede the beer can which, although very common, is disliked by all, since a pouch bottle with an ordinary neck, without lock ring or stopper, but provided only with a device for tearing off the neck weld, may replace the can.
