Abstract

The invention relates to a device for selecting an even plurality of, for instance six, numbers from a series of numbers, for instance 1-42. In diverse lotteries a main prize is won by correctly forecasting a combination of six numbers from a series of numbers. A second prize is for example won by forecasting a combination of five correctly predicted numbers, a third prize for four predicted numbers and a consolation prize for three predicted numbers. The invention provides a device for selecting an even plurality of, for instance six, numbers from a series of numbers, for instance 1-42, characterized by a number carrier with receiving locations for receiving a series of numbers, wherein the receiving locations are positioned as pairs of two and wherein the pairs of receiving locations are divided into two groups as equal as possible and characterized by an indicator carrier which carries a series of combination indicators for indicating combinations of pairs of receiving locations. One or more consolation prizes can be won with certainty herewith and the chances of third and second prizes are at least increased in the case the game is played with a complete series of combination indicators.

Description

DEVICE FOR SELECTING NUMBERS
1. The invention
The invention relates to a device for selecting an even plurality of, for instance six, numbers from a series of numbers, for instance 1-42.
In diverse lotteries a main prize is won by correctly forecasting a combination of six numbers from a series of for instance 36, 41, 42, 44, 45, 49, 54 or 56 numbers.
A second prize is for example won by forecasting a combination of five correctly predicted numbers, a third for four predicted numbers and a consolation prize for three predicted numbers.
The invention provides a device as designated in claim 1 with which one or more consolation prizes can with certainty be won and wherein at least the chances of third and second prizes are increased in the case the game is played with a complete series of combination indicators.
Mentioned and other features of the invention will be elucidated in the description following hereinbelow with reference to a drawing. In the drawings, by way of example:
Figures 1 and 5 show perspective, broken away views of a preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention respectively prior to and during use;
Figure 2 shows the rear side of the device of figure

Figures 3 and 4 show respectively the front and rear of the indicator carrier of the device of figure 1.
The device 31 of figure 1 serves to select six numbers from a series of 42 numbers. A sleeve-like number carrier which is formed by an external sleeve 32 has a front side 4 and a rear side 5. Positioned on the front side are 42 receiving locations 7 for receiving a series of 42 numbers as pairs 6 of two numbers. These pairs 6 are divided into two groups 1 and 2 which are as equal as possible and which are disposed respectively above and below an elongate window 10. Since the plurality of 21 pairs is not divisible by two, group 1 has eleven pairs 6 and group 2 one pair fewer, that is, only ten pairs 6. The receiving locations 7 are empty before use (figure 1) and in figure 5 are filled in by a user at his choice such that each number between 1-42 only occurs once. An indicator carrier is slidable as a slide 3 of cardboard or like stiff material in the external sleeve and bears a series of combination indicators to indicate combinations of pairs 6 of receiving locations 7. Each combination indicator consists of a line of points and three crosses arranged at a mutual distance a on this line, which mutual distance a corresponds with the mutual distance b of the centres of the receiving locations 7. The receiving locations 7 per pair 6 and the positions of points and crosses respectively are situated at equal distances c from the inner edge 11 of the sleeve 32 as the positions of the points and crosses respectively of the slide 3 are situated at corresponding equal distances c from the side edge 12. The pairs 6 are designated with lines 13 in the direction of the window 10. In the relative position "11" of the sleeve 32 and slide 3 of figure 1, the combination of the numbers of the group 1 from the six receiving compartments 7 are indicated above the three crosses. According to figure 5 these are the numbers 22, 25, 28, 42, 30 and 39. From group 2 are also designated the numbers 18, 40, 9, 38, 36 and 24. These two number combinations can then be filled into two number squares of a lottery ticket.
The particular slide position, for instance the eleventh, is visible. All lines of points and crosses (number combination indicators) are numbered at the side with serial numbers which can be read through a window 15 adjacent to window 10. Number combination indicators are present both on the front side and the rear side of slide 3. By sliding the slide 3 upside down in the sleeve 32, still other combinations of pairs 6 of receiving locations 7 are designated with the same lines of points and crosses. The serial numbers, which are arranged in figure 1 on the right-hand side of slide 3 and which are then turned upside down and are not visible during use, will be visible in the correct manner in the window when the slide 3 is inserted upside down. Use of the device 31 according to the invention ensures that three numbers of this lottery draw (6 out of 42) (Belgian lottery) will have been correctly selected at least twice, while the chances of mo:; a correctly forecast numbers are increased, assuming that 285 squares of lottery tickets are filled in as according to all the indicators of the indicator carrier formed by the slide 3.
The sleeve 32 contains on the front a compartment 16 with the text "maybe 6, sometimes 5, often 4 ... but ALWAYS 3". In addition there is a further compartment 17 for an attractive illustration and a compartment 18 for a slogan, advertising message or the lire. The rear of the sleeve 32 contains instructions for use 19 and for instance a compartment 20 for a mark symbol.

2.2. If the omitted number is the same as one of the six drawn
numbers, the remaining five numbers are then to be found in group 1 or group 2, or in both groups :

I cannot divide the total supply Y by 2 ⇒ I increase the total supply with a random number, to be found in the total supply, which random number is added to that group of the two groups 1 and 2, in which this random number did not yet occur.
I divide the increased supply by 2 ⇒ the increased supply is divided into two proportional groups : group 1 and group 2. The six drawn numbers are to be found in group 1 or group 2, or in both groups (see A.l.)
B. GROUPS AND PAIRS

I split Group 1 and Group 2 into pairs of two numbers. To be able to do this the groups 1 and 2 must fulfill the following condition: They must each have an even plurality of numbers.
1. If both groups fulfill the condition the total supply X (ref.
A.1) or the reduced supply Y (ref A.2.1 and A.2.2) or the increased supply Y (ref. A.3) is split into two proportional groups, each containing a proportional plurality of pairs.
2. If both groups do "not" fulfill this condition both groups will have to be rearranged, this in the following manner:
We equate the supply X (ref. A.1) or the reduced supply Y (ref. A.2.1 and A.2.2) or the increased supply Y (ref. A.3) with Z.
Group 1 = (Z divided by 2) plus 1. ⇒ Group 1 is divisible by 2.
Group 2 = (Z divided by 2) minus 1. ⇒ Group 2 is divisible by 2.
CONCLUSION: The supply X (ref. A.l) or the reduced
supply Y (ref A.2.1 and A.2.2) or the increased supply Y (ref. A.3) is split into
two disproportional groups, the first
group containing 1 pair (=2 numbers) more
than the second group.

C. MINIMUM NUMBER OF COMBINATIONS

It follows from the conclusions elucidated in points A and B the..: the original supply of numbers is either retained or reduced by one number or increased with one number.
We have split the new supply of numbers, which is either the same as, or larger or smaller than the original supply of numbers into 2 groups of pairs, of which the one group contains a maximum of 1 pair more than the other group and of which at least one group contains 3 correct numbers.
CONCLUSION :
THE MINIMUM PLURALITY OF COMBINATIONS OF SIX NUMBERS REQUIRED TO HAVE AT LEAST THREE CORRECT NUMBERS IS EQUAL TO THE PLURALITY OF COMBINATIONS OF THREE PAIRS FROM ALL THE PAIRS IN GROUP 1 "PLUS" THE PLURALITY OF COMBINATIONS OF THREE PAIRS FROM ALL THE PAIRS IN GROUP 2.

In this manner the physical representation on the internal slide of all combinations of three pairs (with the exception of all identical reflected combinations (see below)) is reduced by half.
If the largest group (or both groups if they contain the same plurality of pairs) contain (s) an uneven plurality of pairs we find some combinations that have an identical reflected combination...

It is self-evident that these combinations must be created not twice but only once.
The inventor opted for the solution of placing the identical reflected combinations before all other combinations. The combination count on the first and upward side of the slide, to be read in a recess intended for this purpose on the external sleeve, starts at the first combination which does not have an identical reflected combination. Each combination is provided with a serial number upward and a serial number downward, apart from the identical reflected combinations, which are only provided with a downward serial number.
NB. In order to have a combination there have to be three crosses above the bottom group. The top group always has a combination.

The external sleeve provides a double recess ...
On the one hand a recess which reveals the upward serial number arranged on the internal slide; on the other hand a recess which reveals the combination according to the serial number arranged on the internal slide.
Above and below the second recess the invention provides a row of blank pairs, to be filled in by the user at his choice taking account of the following facts :
1. If no increase or reduction of the supply is required, all
numbers of the supply must then be used once.
Example: Belgian Lotto : 42 NUMBERS

2. If reduction of the supply is required, all numbers of the
supply, with the exception of the omitted number, must then be used once...

Example: Playing 20 numbers on the Belgian Lotto.
Fill in 20 numbers, in pairs of four and going from left to right.

If 5 or more drawn numbers are identicall to the 20 selected numbers, you have at the very least a combination with at least three correct numbers.

Claims

1. Device (31) for selecting an even plurality of, for instance six, numbers from a series of numbers, for instance 1-42, characterized by a number carrier (32) with receiving locations (7) for receiving a series of numbers, wherein the receiving locations (7) are positioned as pairs (6) of two and wherein the pairs (6) of receiving locations (7) are divided into two groups (1 and 2) as equal as possible and characterized by an indicator carrier (3) which carries a series of combination indicators for indicating combinations of pairs (6) of receiving locations (7).
2. Device (31) as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the number carrier (32) is formed as a guide of the indicator carrier (3).
3. Device (31) as claimed in claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the number carrier (32) consists of a sleeve and the indicator carrier (3) is slidable in the sleeve.
4. Device (31) as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the number carrier (32) has at least one window (10) through which at least one determined combination indicator, and preferably two determined combination indicators, can be seen in a determined relative slide position between number carrier (32) and indicator carrier (3).
5. Device (31) as claimed in any of the claims 1-4, characterized in that the combination indicators have their own serial number, which serial number is carried by the indicator carrier (3) and which preferably can be seen through a window (15) of the number carrier (32).
6. Device (31) as claimed in any of the claims 1-5, characterized in that the indicator carrier (3) carries combination indicators on both its front and rear side.
7. Device (31) as claimed in claims 1-6, characterized in that the indicator carrier (3) has on at least one side and preferably on each of both its sides two series of combination indicators, wherein the second series of combination indicators is formed by turning upside down the first series of combination indicators
