Definitions

  • the present invention is directed to a wet shaving system and, more particularly, to a wet shaving system which permits pivotal blade movement.
  • safety razors were manufactured with one or two blades disposed between a guard bar and a cap member.
  • the blades were rigidly fixed relative to the other face-engaging elements.
  • dynamic shaving systems have been introduced which permit one or more of the face-engaging elements of the system to move in response to forces encountered during shaving.
  • a guard bar and two blade supports purportedly move independently against the biasing forces of tandem springs in response to forces encountered during shaving. Independent movement of these elements will cause the shaving geometry, particularly the blade exposure and blade span, to change dependent upon forces encountered by each of the three independently movable elements.
  • These elements are movably disposed within slots in a base member for movement generally perpendicular to a plane pa ⁇ ing through the blade edges when those edges are in an unbiased position.
  • Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention.
  • Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along lines 2-2 of Figure 1.
  • Figure 3 is an exploded view illustrating a blade support and blade of the embodiment illustrated in Figure 1.

  • the present invention relates to dynamic razor heads which permit at least one blade to rotate about a stationary pivoting axis in response to forces encountered during shaving, e.g. drag forces exerted on the guard bar.
  • the various embodiments of the present invention are specifically designed to prevent translation of the pivotal axis during shaving.
  • the term "razor head” is used to include disposable cartridges which are commonly marketed separately from a razor for assembly by the user. Also included herein within the meaning of "razor head” are shaving systems wherein the operative shaving elements are integrally formed with a handle.
  • razor head 10 comprises a base member 30 having a forward portion 31, a cap portion 38 and side portions 36.
  • a guard bar 50 preferably comprising a face-engaging surface 53 profiled so as to provide adequate skin tensioning, e.g., beveled, and a rearwardly projecting tongue 55, is disposed within base member 30.
  • Guard bar tongue 55 is configured to slide forwardly and rearwardly in response to the forward biasing action of a biasing member, e.g., a cantilever spring 70 and rearwardly-directed drag forces encountered during shaving, respectively.
  • the rearwardly projecting tongue 55 of guard bar 50 also comprises a pair of recesses 57, 59 which are preferably generally circular in cross- section for pivotal connection with blade supports 85 in a manner described in further detail below.
  • Razor head 10 also comprises a forward blade 80 mounted on a blade support 85.
  • the illustrated embodiment of the blade support 85 comprises a plurality of pins 87 engaged with holes 82 in the support portion 81 of bent blade 80.
  • Pins 87 may be connected with support portion 81 in any suitable manner including mechanical staking, or alternatively, the blade support 85 may be insert-molded onto the blade. Blade support 85 also comprises laterally extending pins 88 which are pivotally received within recesses 37 of the base member side portions 36.
  • Recesses 37 of base member 30 are designed to receive lateral pins
  • Each blade support 85 also advantageously comprises a substantially cylindrical linking section 89 designed to be rotatably received within circular recesses 57, 59 of guard bar 50. This connection between blade support 85 and guard bar 50 serves to translate rearwardly directed forces exerted on the guard bar 50 into rotational movement of blade 80.
  • the dynamic movement of the illustrated embodiment can be readily appreciated.
  • Those skilled in the art will appreciate that a number of different forces act upon a razor head during shaving. These forces originate upon contact between the various skin-engaging elements of the razor head and the surface being shaved. Particularly, forces are exerted on the guard bar, the blade(s) and the cap.
  • the present invention is specifically designed to translate forces on the guard bar into rotational movement, but not translational movement, of each blade about the pivoting axis of the blade.
  • guard bar 50 can schematically be broken down into force components which are directed rearwardly as shown by arrow F t in Figure 2 and downwardly directed (normal) forces illustrated by arrow F Formula. Since the slots 54 of guard bar 50 extend generally from front-to-back for guiding guard bar 50 forwardly and rearwardly, engaging pin 39 does not permit the downward movement of the forward section of guard bar 50 in response to the downwardly directed (normal) forces. Consequently, normal forces exerted on guard bar 50 are not intended to result in any significant movement of the guard bar or blades 80.
  • a shaving aid 40 is incorporated into the razor head of the present invention. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the shaving aid can be incorporated by several different methods including attaching or embedding the shaving aid to a portion of the razor head.
  • Exemplary materials constituting the shaving aid may comprise one or various combinations of the following: A.
  • a lubricating agent for reducing the frictional forces between the razor head and the skin e.g., a microencapsulated silicone oil.
  • An agent which reduces the drag between the razor parts and the skin e.g., a polyethylene oxide in the range of molecular weights between 100,000 and 600,000; a non-ionic polyacrylamide; and/or a natural polysaccharide derived from plant materials such as "guar gum” .
  • An agent which modifies the chemical structure of the hair to allow the razor blade to pass through the whiskers very easily e.g., a depilatory agent is one example.
  • a cleaning agent which allows whiskers and skin debris to be washed more easily from the razor parts during shaving e.g., a silicone polyethylene oxide block copolymer and detergent such as sodium lauryl sulphate.
  • E A medicinal agent for killing bacteria, or repairing skin damage and abrasions.
  • F A cosmetic agent for softening, smoothing, conditioning or improving the skin.
  • the configuration of the shaving aid, its place of application to the razor cartridge, the manner of attachment and/or other means and method of incorporation may vary widely to fit particular requirements.
  • the present invention provides an efficient design for effecting blade rotation in response to forces encountered during shaving.
  • the present design insures that all rearwardly directed forces encountered by the guard bar are operative in causing the blade(s) to rotate.
