Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an egg tray of the kind set forth in the preamble of claim 1.
  • Egg trays of the kind referred to above are used i.a. for shipping and transportation of relatively large con- signments of eggs in boxes, of which a number are again stacked on pallets, and in containers.
  • the boxes, pallets and containers are dimensioned according to standard dimensions intended to contribute to the best possible utilization of the available transportation space.
  • a number of trays, stacked on top of each other to form a stack is placed in a box, or the stack is encased in a surrounding envelope forming a box.
  • the shape of the trays is such that the eggs are embraced below by an egg-supporting tray and above by the lower part of a further egg-supporting tray placed on top of the first-mentioned tray.
  • the total height of a finished stack equals the total height of the stacked egg-supporting trays plus the height of the additional tray being used as a cover.
  • the total height may become so great as to cause problems when the stack of trays is to be placed in a standard box.
  • the invention is based upon the recognition of the possi ⁇ bility of achieving not only a decrease in the height of a tray and hence of the total height of a given stack, but also an improved protection against damage to the eggs placed in the stack.
  • the effects of the construction of the egg pockets as set forth is that neighbouring egg pockets will overlap each other at their mutually facing side-wall regions, at the same time as the eggs, due to the egg-supporting surface being situated far down in the egg pockets, the eggs can be placed exceptionally far down in the pockets.
  • the combination of the low placing of the supporting surface and the overlapping having been achieved makes it possible to achieve such a reduction of the requisite height of the egg tray for receiving eggs, that it is no longer necessary to produce a special low tray to serve as a cover, but that a tray adapted for stacking of eggs can also be used as a cover for a stack of trays without causing problems, when the tray is to be placed properly in a box suitable for a given pallet size and a given container height.
  • the invention provides a possibility for improved utilization of the cargo volume of a container intended to receive e.g. the boxes, as this cargo volume may now be filled with e.g. eight boxes, the stack of egg-supporting trays of which are still formed from six trays instead of previously seven. This can increase the utilization of the total cargo capacity of the container by e.g. approximately 15 p.c.
  • the invention also provides for an improved transfer of pressure loads on the cover, as these loads will be distributed in an improved manner around the eggs by the pocket walls em ⁇ bracing the eggs in the uppermost layer.

  • the circles 16a and 16b are superimposed upon and are smaller than the circles determining the cross- sectional shape of the associated pockets 16 themselves.
  • the especially narrow overlapping section determined by the lines 16a and 16b serves as a spacer when two trays are nested into each other for storage purposes.
  • the pockets 16 com ⁇ prise a continuously curved, annular supporting surface 26 for the eggs.
  • this tray may be placed in position with either the top or the bottom facing downward.
  • An additional advantage of the invention consists in that it will be possible to use an egg tray shaped in accordance with the invention for packaging even larger eggs, for instance eggs in the 70-gramme class, without problems arising with regard to stacking the egg trays in a standard box.
