Abstract

The subject invention relates to solvent-free, lithium-ion conductive, solid polymer electrolytes containing an amorphous polyacrylonitrile polymer and an ionizable lithium salt. Preferably, the polyacrylonitrile polymer is a polyacrylonitrile copolymer obtained from copolymerization of a mixture of monomers containing at least 90 % acrylonitrile monomer. The solid polymer electrolyte is prepared using a method that produces a solvent-free amorphous polyacrylonitrile copolymer without causing nitrile cyclization or cross-linking reactions to occur. The polymer electrolytes of the subject invention have an ionic conductivity of about 10-4 to about 10?-2 Ohm-1cm-1¿ at ambient temperature.
