Definitions
- the present invention relates to stackable trays, blanks for forming such trays, a stack of such trays, a pack which includes an outer case or carton within which a stack of such trays are contained and to related means and methods.
- a blank for a tray said blank being formed from sheet material and comprising:
- a tray formed from a blank as defined in the paragraph immediately above.
- Figure IA shows a developed view of a blank for forming a first type of tray
- Figure 2A shows a developed view of a blank for forming a tray of a second type
- Figures IB show perspective views of 2B: the assembled trays formed from the blanks of the first and second types shown respectively in Figures IB and 2B;
- Figure 3 shows a developed view of a blank for forming a tray according to a third type
- Figure 4 shows a perspective view of an assembled tray of the third type as shown in
- Figure 5 shows the assembled tray of Figure 4 containing spherical products such as apples (these being shown transparent so as to not obscure the array pattern beneath them) ;
- Figure 6 shows a perspective view of an assembled carton with trays of the type of Figures
- Figure 7 shows a perspective view of an assembled carton using assembled trays of the type shown in Figure 4 being packed therein;
- Figure 8 shows diagra matically one of the assembled trays of Figures IB, 2B or 4 being collapsed for storage purposes;
- Figure 9 shows a blank for forming the case or carton such as shown assembled in Figures 6 and 7;
- Figures 10a show developed views of further & 10b embodiments of blanks for forming trays of the first and second types;
- Figure 11 shows a developed view of a further embodiment of a blank for forming a tray of the third type
- Figure 12 shows a perspective view of an assembled tray formed from the blank of Figure 11.
- the present invention is directed towards achieving a tray which is stackable with each tray holding a plurality of products at respective discrete points in an array provided on a base portion of the tray, these products being positioned relative to the products held on the immediately adjacent upper and lower trays in the stack.
- the present invention achieves this in various embodiments which will now be described.
- the tray blanks 1' and 1 ' ' of Figures IA and 2A are each shown having a substantially rectangular base 2.
- the term "rectangular” would include a square shape where the sides are of equal length as well as the rectangular shape having longer and shorter sides as shown.
- Each base 2 is shown having fold lines 60 about its perimeter as it joins with four separate peripheral portions which in the embodiments shown define a pair of opposed side walls 4 and a pair of opposed end walls 5.
- the fold lines 60 may include creases, areas of weakening, cut outs, cuts, scoring or the like.
- Each of the end walls 5 is shown provided with an end corner portion 50 which in the assembled tray, see Figures 2, will be glued or otherwise secured with an end flap 10 provided at the end of the side walls 4.
- This securement may preferably not be with the entire area of the flap 10 so that, as illustrated diagrammatically in Figure 2B, an area 10a can be left unsecured which will be able to then facilitate the assembled corner portions 45 folding inwardly along the fold lines 41 (see Figure 8) when the assembled tray is collapsed for storage and/or transportation purposes.
- the tray 1' which when assembled forms the tray 100' in the example shown has an array of holding means 3 in the base portion 2 with an odd number adjacent each of the end walls 5 with the intervening rows alternating between even and odd number rows.
- the tray blank 1'' which when assembled forms the tray 100'', has an even number of holding means 3 adjacent each of the end walls 5 with intermediate rows alternating between odd and even numbers.
- the arrays as shown of 3, 4, 3, 4, 3 and 4,3,4,3,4 respectively are of course given by way of example only. Different numbers will be appropriate for different arrays depending on the specific count of a particular tray.
- each tray could for example have numbers of holding means 3 ranging between 19 and 25 for example with the lesser number being used for larger sized fruit.
- the use of the two types of arrays in the trays 100' and 100'' will mean that by alternating the trays 1 in a stack the locating means 3 will not be coinciding in a vertical direction in immediately adjacent trays.
- the locating means 3 of one tray blank will be vertically off-set from the locating means 3 on the other tray blank. In this way the fruit or other product held within a particular locating means 3 will be positioned apart from both the adjacent products in its own tray but also from the products held in the lower and upper trays in any stack.
- Each locating means 3 in this embodiment of the invention is shown comprising a plurality of slits or cuts 42 leading to a central portion 43.
- the slits 42 will enable the material of the locating means 3 to depress downwardly so as to form individual resilient fingers 44 surrounding the bottom of the fruit and holding it in position about the central portion 43.
- the rows of locating means 3 are shown in the embodiments of Figures 1 and 2 to run substantially parallel to the end walls 5.
- the respective rows are also shown defined by intermediate scoring or cuts 46 which will enable each row to itself provide for some flexibility and resilience. Each row is therefore effectively suspended within the base portion 2 by the material 47 at each end of each row.
- the flexibility of this suspension, forming a "hammock" effect will be determined at least in part by the amount of material left at the ends of the rows connecting the rows with the side walls 4.
- the cuts 46 are shown profiled or contoured so as to provide a wavy or sinuous path across the tray. In this way, when the rows of locating means are depressed by the fruit sitting in them, the material of the tray along the cuts 46 presents a smooth edge to the fruit below to therefore avoid a tendency to dig into the fruit as could happen if the cuts 46 were straight.
- the contoured edges 46 will in fact tend to cup around the fruit enhancing its retention.
- the flexibility of the rows of locating means can in many cases result in contact between fruit in the upper and lower rows. This can in fact assist in stabilising the fruit layers.
- the flutes preferably extend in the direction indicated by arrows F. In this way the flutes will be extending vertically in the side walls 4 and in the tabs 10 forming the corner portions 45 so as to provide a strengthening of the resultant trays 100. It will be appreciated in this regard that in the stacking of the trays the respective corners 45 of the stacked trays will be forming a corner support or column for the stacked structure. This will materially assist the compression strength of the total package of stacked trays.
- FIG 2B an optional feature is illustrated by way of example namely the provision of projecting tabs 99 along one or more walls of the tray 100 which in a stack of trays can engage within aligned recesses 98 provided in the tray immediately above.
- the projections 99 and the recesses 98 could be provided in any one or more of the walls of any of the trays described herein.
- a tray blank 1' ' ' has an array of locating means 3 which in this example have an odd number adjacent one end wall 5 and an even number adjacent the opposite end wall 5.
- the intermediate rows of locating means 3 then alternate with odd and even numbers.
- the plurality of articles 97 will then be positioned along the rows of locating means 3 so as to provide a pattern consistent with the particular array. With the tray immediately above and immediately below in a stack of trays being twisted through 180° it will be appreciated that the products 97 in the immediately adjacent trays will be vertically off-set one from the other and vertically separated also by the height of the walls 4 and 5.
- the trays of all the embodiments of Figures 1 to 5 may include ventilation holes spaced apart about the base portions 2 so as to facilitate ventilation within a stack of the trays.
- the ventilation holes may comprise circular holes which are provided immediately adjacent the end walls 5 and if required also provided in the intermediate rows suitably adjacent the side walls 4.
- a blank 20 for forming a carton or case for accommodating a stack of trays is shown.
- the blank 20 is shown provided with four adjoining regions 21, 22, 23 and 24 which in the resultant carton will form the side and end walls.
- Forming the top and bottom walls are the respective adjoining regions 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, 31, 32 and 33.
- elongate apertures 66 and 67 are shown in the walls 21 and 23 to provide hand holds.
- openings 34 to allow for the ventilation of the contents of the carton when assembled.
- An edge 25 of the wall 24 provides a means for securement by adhesive or the like with the wall 21 so as to form the rectangular structure.
- a carton 20 such as formed from the blank of Figure 9 is shown accommodating a stack of trays 100.
- the top tray of the stack is by way of example shown of the type 100'' of Figure 2B.
- the tray immediately below will then be a tray of the type 100' of Figure IB.
- the trays can be first filled with the products and then assembled into the stack. Alternatively the trays could be filled as they are stacked up. The stacking and filling can be done manually or by appropriate stacking and filling machines.
- each of the locating means 3' are shown including an aperture 51 surrounded by a plurality of flexible fingers 52 defined by a plurality of radial cuts 53. The articles in these embodiments of the invention are therefore able to physically sit within the holes 51 with the fingers 52 flexing downwardly so as to provide a recess for the bottom part of the article.
- Ventilation holes 54 are shown provided spaced about the respective base portions 2.
- FIGs 11 and 12 an alternative embodiment of the invention shows a tray blank 1 which is of the type shown in Figure 3 and is able to form an assembled tray 100 of the type of Figure 4 wherein the turning of alternate trays in a stack through 180° provides the required off-setting of the locating means 3' of the vertically aligned rows in the stack.
- the locating means 3'of Figures 11 and 12 are of the type described with reference to Figures 10.
- substantially spherical articles (97) such as apples or pears, they will substantially close off the openings 51 in the respective trays 100. In some instances the articles such as fruit will be wrapped prior to being placed in the trays.
- the material of the trays 100 and/or the carton 20 may be of any suitable flat sheet material but suitably a corrugated board may be used such as a laminate having a corrugated fluting medium held between outer layers of paper or card.
- a preferred material would be very thin corrugated board such as "E" flute material approximately 1.5mm thick.
- the trays and/or the carton may be held together with gluing and/or stapling and/or taping or the like.
- the trays 100, 100', 100", 100' would be assembled in situ such as in the fruit pack houses. In that case there would be no need to have the capability of the trays being able to be collapsed flat such as shown in Figure 8.
- the perforations or the like 41 could then be omitted in this embodiment as the corners 45 would be glued or otherwise secured prior to the trays being used.
