Abstract

A threaded fastener (12) that self locks as it is tightened to a fastened object (14). The thread (30) includes one or more portions (48) that are shifted, resulting in one or more discontinuities in the thread (30). Each shifted portion (48) of thread (30) is fully formed at the discontinuity. The shifted portions (48) will deform a relatively softer female thread, causing the deformed thread to move up and over the end faces (56) of the shifted portions (48) and to pack up in front of the end faces (56) to prevent any significant loosening of the connection.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 3 June 1994 (03.06.94); original claims 1, 6 and 12 amended; original claims 2-5 and 7 unchanged; original claim 8 cancelled; claims 9-19 renumbered as claims 8-18; new claims 19-25 added (6 pages)]

2. The threaded fastener of claim 1, wherein the shifted portion is continuous with a next preceding portion of thread that is not shifted.
3. The threaded fastener of claim 1, wherein the discontinuity is located in the first revolution of thread at the bearing end of the shank.
4. The threaded fastener of claim 1, wherein the length of the shifted portion of thread is approximately one-quarter the circumference of the shank.
5. The threaded fastener of claim 1, wherein the buttress end of the shifted portion is offset approximately one-quarter pitch relative to a next succeeding portion of thread that is not shifted.
6. A threaded fastener, comprising: a shank having a bearing end and a lead end, the lead end being the end of the shank that is threaded first; a helical thread extending between said ends, the thread having a crest and a root, the roots of axially adjacent revolutions of the thread forming a thread groove; and said helical thread having a plurality of portions that, before installing the fastener, are shifted toward the bearing end of the shank and resulting in respective discontinuities of the thread, each shifted portion of thread having a buttress end that is fully formed from crest to root at its respective discontinuity.
7. The threaded fastener of claim 6, wherein each shifted portion is continuous with a next preceding portion of thread that is not shifted.
8. The threaded fastener of claim 7, wherein each of a plurality of revolutions of thread has one of said discontinuities.
9. The threaded fastener of claim 8, wherein the plurality of revolutions includes the first revolution of thread at the bearing end of the shank.
10. The threaded fastener of claim 9, wherein the discontinuities are axially aligned and each located in consecutive revolutions of thread, respectively.
11. A threaded fastener, comprising: a shank having a bearing end and a lead end, the lead end being the end of the shank that is threaded first; a helical thread extending between said ends, the thread having a crest and a root, the roots of axially adjacent revolutions of the thread forming a thread groove; said helical thread having a first plurality of revolutions beginning with the first revolution at the bearing end of the shank, each of said first plurality of revolutions having a discontinuity that is formed by a portion of thread that, before installing the fastener, is shifted toward the bearing end of the shank, each shifted portion of thread having a buttress end that is fully formed from crest to root at its respective discontinuity; and a female member for engaging the thread of the shank, said female member being made of a relatively softer material than the thread of the shank.
12. The threaded fastener of claim 11, wherein said female member is an unthreaded swaging collar.
13. The threaded fastener of claim 11, wherein said female member is a nut having a female thread to engage the thread of the shank.
14. A method of forming a self-locking threaded fastener to be threaded into a workpiece, comprising the steps of: placing an unthreaded shank between a die set, the unthreaded shank having a bearing end and a lead end; forming a fully-formed thread on the shank by moving one die of the die set relative to the other, the thread being formed with a crest and a root, the roots of axially adjacent revolutions of the thread forming a thread groove, the thread further being formed such that the lead end of the shank is the end that will be threaded into the workpiece first; and rolling a portion of the fully formed thread at the bearing end of the shank over an insert in the die set, said insert shifting said fully formed portion toward the bearing end of the threaded shank and creating a discontinuity in the first revolution of thread at the bearing end of the shank, said shifted portion having a buttress end that is fully formed from crest to root at the discontinuity.
15. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of removing the threaded shank from the die set before the shifted portion of thread is rerolled by the die set.
16. A die for forming a self-locking thread on an unthreaded pin, comprising: a block having an entry end, an exit end, and an outside edge disposed between the entry end and the exit end, said outside edge defining a rectangular notch in the block, the notch having an entry side parallel to the entry end of the block and an exit side parallel to the exit end of the block, the exit side of the notch being closer to the exit end of the block than the entry side of the notch; a roll surface on said block bounded by the entry end, the exit end and the outside edge of the block, the roll surface of the block having a set of grooves aligned at a predetermined angle; and an insert having a roll surface disposed in said notch, the roll surface of the insert having a set of grooves that are disaligned with the grooves on the block at the entry side of the notch and aligned with the grooves on the block at the exit side of the notch, the distance between the entry end of the block and the entry side of the notch being sufficient to form a fully formed thread on the unthreaded pin and the depth of the grooves of the insert being sufficient to make a plurality of fully formed shifted portions of thread on the pin.
17. The die of claim 16, further comprising a window means disposed between the exit side of the notch and the exit end of the block for preventing the shifted portions of the thread from being rerolled during the rolling of the pin.
18. The die of claim 17, wherein the distance between the entry side of the notch and the window means is less than half the circumference of the unthreaded pin.
19. A threaded fastener, comprising: a shank having a bearing end and a lead end, the lead end being the end of the shank that is threaded first; a helical thread extending between said ends, the thread having a crest and a root, the roots of axially adjacent revolutions of the thread forming a thread groove; and said helical thread having a portion that, before installing the fastener, is shifted toward the bearing end of the shank relative to a next succeeding portion of thread in the direction of the bearing end of the shank, resulting in a discontinuity of the thread between the shifted portion and the next succeeding portion, the shifted portion of thread having a buttress end that is fully formed from crest to root at the discontinuity.
