Abstract

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a disposable protective garment (7), such as a surgical gown, for use in hygienic conditions, and a disposable protective garment manufactured by said method and made of a non-woven fabric or the like. According to the invention, the protective garment (7) is manufactured by cutting it from a single section of material to form a blank (1) substantially comprising sleeves (3), and an upper portion (1b), covering an upper part of the body, and a lower portion (1c), covering a lower part of the body, and a narrowing (1a) between them. Thereafter glue or a sealing agent (4) is applied on the seams of the sleeves and the upper portion (1b) of the blank, the blank (1) is folded in half at the upper portion in such a manner that the front of the garment remains substantially seamless, and finally the sleeves (3) and the back portions (1b, 1c) of the protective garment are glued or heat sealed together.

Description

A method for manufacturing a disposable protective garment for use in hygienic conditions and a disposable protective garment
The invention relates to a method for manu¬ facturing a disposable protective garment, such as a surgical gown, for use in hygienic conditions, said protective garment being made of a non-woven fabric or the like. The invention also relates to a protective garment manufactured by the method.
There is a large number of various known pro¬ tective garments which are intended to be used in surgical or other medical treatment in order to prevent microbes from being transferred from the attending medical personnel to a patient or vice versa. The surgical gowns of medical personnel are often disposable and sterile. Known protective garments are usually formed from a plurality of panels sewn together in a similar way as ordinary clothing. As a protective garment is usually required, on the one hand, to have as good protective effect as possible and, on the other hand, to be easy to don, it is typically a gown which has an unbroken single front panel and which can be secured in the back by means of a so-called wraparound principle.
The disadvantage of stitched seams in condi¬ tions requiring absolute cleanliness is that they may leak; the clothes worn underneath a protective garment may thus become contaminated when, for example, the blood of a patient undergoing an operation or other fluids moisten a seam. Furthermore, known protective garments comprise a large number of seams, as the garments are made from a plurality of panels to be sewn together. There are also various other known seaming methods, such as ultrasonic welding, adhesive tapes and various fasteners. However, what is not yet available is a protective garment in which the number of seams would have been minimized in view of the risk of con¬ tamination. The object of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing such a protective garment, said method being mainly characterized in that
- the protective garment is cut from a single section of material to form a blank substantially com¬ prising sleeves, and an upper portion, covering an upper part of the body, and a lower portion, covering a lower part of the body, and a narrowing between them,
- glue or a sealing agent is applied on the seams of the sleeves and the upper portion of the blank,
- the blank is folded in half at the upper portion in such a manner that the front of the garment remains substantially seamless, and
- the sleeves and the back portions of the protective garment are glued or heat sealed together.
The protective garment of the invention is above all tight in the front, and it protects practic¬ ally the whole body of the wearer, which is a signific¬ ant improvement in view of hygiene. In addition, the manufacturing method of the invention is inexpensive, which is a prerequisite for a disposable product.
The preferred embodiments of the method accord¬ ing to the invention and the protective garment of the invention are characterized by what is disclosed in the appended claims.
In the following the invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the accom¬ panying drawing, in which
Figure 1 shows the blank of a protective garment of the invention, Figure 2 shows a protective garment of the invention after seaming.
The blank 1 of a protective garment, illus¬ trated in Figure 1, is cut from a non-woven fabric in one piece. For reasons of clarity, the figure shows the left side of the blank folded and seamed to form a pro¬ tective garment of the invention. It can be seen that when the upper portion lb of the blank is folded in half, for instance as indicated by the arrow, both a sleeve and a back portion can be formed and seamed sub¬ stantially by a single operation. The blank comprises parts lb and lc for upper and lower parts of the body, said parts being separated by narrowings la approximate¬ ly at the armpits, and a neck opening 2. In order for a protective garment to be formed from the blank, glue or a heat sealing agent 4 (shown in broken lines) is applied to the seams of the sleeves 3 and the back portion of the garment; thereafter the blank is folded, for instance as indicated in Figure 1, and glued or heat sealed. The resulting protective garment 7 illustrated in Figure 2 has a substantially seamless unbroken front portion. Referring further to Figure 1, the so-called wraparound ties necessary for tying the protective garment on a wearer consist of ties 5a and 5b attached to the fabric by glueing or heat sealing and ties 6a and 6b formed by cutting strips from the lateral edges of the lower portion lc of the blank.
As stated above, the protective garment accord¬ ing to the invention, illustrated in Figure 2, has no seams in the front. The front has only the tie 5b, which is attached to waist level by glueing or heat sealing, and which is knotted together with the tie 6a when the garment is worn. Accordingly, the ties 5a and 6b are knotted together around the wearer's waist. The neck opening of the garment can be secured, for example, by means of an adhesive tape 8, which is also attached to the garment by glueing.
It will be clear to one skilled in the art that the various embodiments of the invention are not restricted to the example described above but can be modified within the scope of the appended claims.
