Description
Front mounting for loudspeaker, and a piece of furniture or room furnishing equipped with such a front mounting
The problem that most often occurs when furnishing rooms, in particular living rooms, where there is a music installation or where such an installation is to be installed, is that the loudspeaker cabinets do not at all harmonise with the furniture and/or the decoration of the room, and in many cases are even very disturbing.
Furthermore, in general it is very difficult to find a suitable place for the loudspeakers, where they do not get in the way and yet at the same time provide good reproduction of the sound throughout the room.
The main aim of the invention is to overcome these not unimportant disadvantages, and to provide a front mounting which enables loudspeakers to be inte¬ grated as a decorative element in a room. For the purpose, the front mounting according to the invention consists of a grill with a .series of slot-shaped openings extending alongside each other, where the cross-section of said openings enlarges towards the exterior on at least one side of said grill, where said grill is meant to be fitted in front of the loud¬ speaker.
On the side of the grill meant to be fitted towards the loudspeaker, it is advantageous for the openings to be enlarged so that the sum of the areas of the openings on this side is at least 80% of the total area of the grill.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the openings on the side of the grill towards the loudspeaker are delimited over a certain depth from this side, by two sloping surfaces converging towards each other in the
manner of a funnel, each two adjacent sloping surfaces intersecting each other at the side towards the loud¬ speaker, thus forming a ridge between two adjacent open- ings.
The invention also concerns an item of furni¬ ture or room furnishing equipped with such a front mounting, together with a loudspeaker placed in a space opposite said front mounting. Further, the invention concerns a method for incorporating loudspeakers in items of furniture or room furnishings, essentially characterised in that a space is provided in said items or furnishings which can function as a loudspeaker cabinet; that at least one of the walls of said space is delimited by a series of slot-shaped openings to form a grill; and that one or more loud¬ speakers are placed in said space opposite said grill.
Further details and advantages of the invention are illustrated on the basis of the following descrip- tions of several specific embodiments of the invention; these descriptions are given only by way of example and are not limitative in any way; the reference numbers used refer only to the attached figures.
Fig. 1 is a front view of a base, column or pillar with a front mounting according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a partial cross-section along line II-II in fig. 1, to a greater scale.
Fig. 3 shows a cross-section similar to that in fig. 2, but for a slightly different embodiment of a front mounting according to the invention.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a base or support for a ceiling beam or mantelpiece.
In these figures, the same reference numbers refer to the same or similar elements. The invention concerns a front mounting for loudspeakers which can either form part of, or form a
whole with, an item or furniture or component thereof, or of the furnishing or decoration of the room itself, such as a base or support for a ceiling beam or mantelpiece, wall panelling or suchlike.
In fig. 1, for example, this front mounting forms part of a pillar or column which is an imitation of an ancient Greek pillar, upon which can be placed e.g. a pot plant, vase of flowers or statuette. Fig. 4 shows a completely different embodiment, in which the front mounting forms the concave, curved side of a support, which forms part of e.g. an open fireplace, and supports a horizontal mantelpiece. The same support with front mounting according to the invention, with a loudspeaker fitted inside, can also be used to support ceiling beams, shelves etc.
Further, the front mounting according to the invention can also form part of a decorative wall element which can take all sorts of forms, such as e.g. a shell shape, in which if desired lighting can also be incorpor¬ ated.
Yet another example is the base of a living room table, a flower pot, wall panelling etc.
The invention is not limited to a particular embodiment or application of the front mounting con¬ cerned.
As can be seen from the figures, which are given only as examples to illustrate the invention, said front mounting is characterised by the fact that it comprises a grill 1 with a series of slot-shaped openings
2 extending alongside each other, on at least one side of said grill 1 said openings 2 enlarging in cross section towards the exterior, where said grill 1 is meant to be mounted in front of the loudspeaker 3. The slot-shaped openings are thus separated from each other by parallel bars 4.
According to the invention, the aim among other things is that the loudspeakers should be totally unobtrusive in the furnishing of a living room, by incorporating them either in movable items of furniture, or in fixed, decorative elements of the furnishing, as already illustrated above, without affecting the sound quality.
In this manner, if the loudspeakers are incorporated in a Greek pillar as in fig. 1, whose column 5 is provided with vertical flutings, said flutings are replaced by the above-mentioned slot-shaped openings 2, such that these hardly alter the appearance of the column. For this purpose, the side walls 6 which form the transition between the bars 4 and the openings 2 more or less correspond to the "half surfaces" of the flutings on classical Greek pillars.
As can be seen clearly from fig. 2, in this embodiment these side walls 6 are concavely curved, so that the openings 2 gradually narrow away from the exterior of the grill to a certain depth from it. In this way, the grill 1 to a certain extent functions as a diffusor which distributes the sound or sound intensity emitted by the loudspeaker 3 more evenly over the area of the room.
In this description, by "outside" of the grill is meant: the side of said grill away from the side opposite which the loudspeaker 3 is placed. In fig. 2, the outside is indicated by reference number 7, while the inside opposite it is indicated by reference number 8.
Further, in this specific embodiment, the slot- shaped openings 2 on the inside 8 of the grill 1 widen so that the sum of the areas of said openings 2 which open on the inside 8 amounts to at least 80% and in some cases 90% of the total area of the grill.
More particularly, the openings are limited
over a certain depth from the inside 8, by sloping surfaces 9 converging towards each other in the manner of a funnel, the adjacent sloping surfaces of two adjacent openings 2 intersecting each other at inside 8, thus forming a ridge 10 in this plane between two adjacent openings. In this way, the sum of area of the openings on the inside 8 of the grill 1 is a maximum.
Further, the openings 2 which extend through the grill 1 also become narrower as they run towards the interior from the two sides 7 and 8. In this way a throat 11 is formed in the openings inside the grill. This throat 11 is preferably situated closer to the inside 8 than the outside 7. In this way, the openings 2 are unobtrusive and in general do not disturb the appearance of the item of furniture or decorated element of room furnishing.
Further, advantageous use can also be made of a covering which is permeable to sound, such as a textile covering 12, on the inside 8 of the grill, said textile covering 12 extending over the whole area of this side. In another preferred embodiment of the inven¬ tion, this covering has more or less the same colour as the colour of the outside 7 of the grill, contributing to the unobtrusive nature of the openings 2.
Fig. 3 shows a variant of the embodiment according to fig. 2. This variant is mainly distin¬ guished from that in fig. 2 not only by certain relative dimensions, but also by the fact that the throat 11 is closer to the front 7 of the grill than to the back 8. Furthermore, the throats 11 extend between the different bars 4 in the same plane parallel to the front and back sides 7 and 8 of the grill 1.
In a preferred embodiment, the distance "c" or the width of the throat 11 is not less than half the
maximum width "b" of the bars 4.
Further, the concave side walls 6 have a radius of curvature "R" more or less equal to half the maximum width "b" of the bars 4. The width of the bars 4 in the side 8 of the grill 1 is advantageously equal to not more than one third of the maximum width "b" at the throat 11. The sloping surfaces 9 of a single bar 4 preferably intersect in this side 8, thus forming a ridge 10 in the above- mentioned side 8, so that the ratio between the sum of the surfaces of the openings 2 in the side 8 and the total area of the grill 1 is a maximum. The angle of intersection α formed by the sloping surfaces 9 of one bar 4 is preferably not more than 45°, while the angle β formed by the planes 13 and 14 through the opposite edges . 15 and 16 of the side walls 9 of the bars 4, said side walls 9 curving towards each other, is at least 60°.
The distance "e" from the throat 11 to the front side 7 of the grill 1 is preferably equal to not more than half the maximum width "b" of the bars 4.
Finally, for a particular grill, the dimensions of the bars 4 and the openings 2 between said bars are usually chosen so that the number of bars is at least four. Surprising as it may seem, it has been found that by using a front mounting with openings the sum of whose areas on the inside 8 is a maximum, said openings first narrowing to a throat 11 in the interior of the grill and then widening once more towards the outside 7 of the front mounting, the openings 2 are not only fairly unobtrusive but also have a favourable effect on the sound emitted by the loudspeaker 3.
The principle of the invention can be applied to all items of furniture or parts thereof in which it is possible to incorporate a loudspeaker cabinet.
According to the invention, this loudspeaker cabinet is formed on at least one of its sides by one of the front mountings described above and illustrated in the figures, with a series of slot-shaped openings 2 forming a grill 1, fitted in front of the loudspeaker(s) . This front mounting can either be flat or curved. Thus for example it is possible to use a cylindrical pillar with flutings over the whole surface of its column, such as a Doric, Ionic or Corinthian pillar, where part of these flutings are replaced by said slot-shaped openings 2.
The invention is of course not limited to the embodiments described above and illustrated in the figures; on the contrary, while still remaining within the scope of the invention, various modifications can be considered, including as regards the shape of the slot- shaped openings, and the way in which the front mounting forms part of an item of furniture or room furnishing. For example, columns or pillars with a more modern appearance can be used.
