Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of golf swing teaching, training and practice devices and in particular to a correcting rod that can be positioned onto a golf club parallel to the shaft.
- the invention represents an improvement over the prior art in that the position of the thumbscrew tightening means allows the device to be readily attached and detached from clubs.
- the device represents in an improvement over US 4,145,054 which shows the use of a golf teaching aid which is attached to the shaft of the club by an attaching means.
- the present invention improves upon this by providing a thumbscrew attaching portion to allow the teaching aid to be quickly removed from one club shaft and placed onto another shaft so as to facilitate the use of the device.
- the invention comprises an attaching device having one end in connection with the staff of the device and the other end divided in two coplanar flanges by a planar slot.
- the flanges are curved to form a channel when they are brought together around the shaft of a club.
- a tightening channel is formed by an aperture in both flanges, this channel is located between the shaft holding channel and the staff end of the device to facilitate easy removal. It is an objective of the invention to provide a golf swing teaching, training and practice aid which can be easily removed and attache to golf shafts.
- Fig. 1 Shows side view of the device
- Fig. 2 Shows the top surface of the device
- Fig. 3 Shows the device in use
- Fig. 4 Shows the tightening channel
- Fig. 5 Shows a front view of the training device.
- Fig. 6 Shows device attached to a club.
- Fig. 7 Shows a bisected view showing one of the channels in the flanges.
- Fig. 8 Shows detail of one of the channels showing curved walls.
- the apparatus is substantially as shown in figure 1.
- the device is of one piece molded plastic construction and is generally of oblong construction.
- the staff engaging portion 8 which is attached to a long narrow staff or rod 5 which runs parallel to the shaft of the club 6 when the device is attached to golf clubs.
- This staff is kept between the arms as practice swings are taken to teach the proper takeaway, position at the top and the release of the wrists etc.
- the staff may be anywhere from a few inches to several feet but preferably about 12-18 inches.
- each of the flanges has an upper and a lower surface which are parallel to each other as well as the groove 7.
- the upper surface 9 of the top flange is shown in fig. 3 and 4.
- the ends of the two flanges 2,3 are curved so that when flanges are joined together the curved ends will form a channel 4 for engaging the shaft of the club.
- This shaft engaging channel runs parallel to the plane of the slot 7 so that each flange forms half of the channel, an upper half and lower half.
- each flange there is an aperture 20 in each flange which, when the flanges are together, these apertures line up to form a "tightening channel" which can hold a threaded bolt (the aperture in the upper flange is shown as 10 in fig. 4).
- This tightening channel runs perpendicular to the plane of the slot and the upper and lower surfaces of the flanges so that each flange has half of the tightening channel.
- each channel has three walls 22, 24, and 26 which will be tightened against the club shaft and/or grip when the flanges are tightened together.
- the walls are identical for the channel in each flange.
- the distance between the middle wall 24 and one of the end walls 22 or 26 should be about 11/16" in order for the middle wall to abut the bottom edge of the club's grip, see figure 6. This means that one of the walls (in this case 22) will be flush against the grip 28 and the bottom wall will be flush against the shaft 30.
- the middle wall will be against the shaft and about touching the bottom of the grip.
- the distance 11/16" between walls is chosen so that the attachment can be precisely lined up against the club grip so that the staff will be in correct position vis a vis the forearms of the golfer.
- each of these walls approximates the form of the shaft of the club, see figure 8.
- These walls are shaped to fit around the shaft/grip and also help to prevent longitudinal rocking and vibration of the apparatus.
- the bolt should be secured through the aperture 20 as shown in figure 5, that aperture is more nearly shown in figure 7 and 8.
- the bolt is secured by a nut which may be thumbscrew.
- This bolt serves to tighten the curved ends of the flanges together around the club shaft.
- this bolt is secured by a winged nut 1 of the thumbscrew variety which attaches to the end of the bolt to allow for easy turning on the bolt.
- This winged nut and bolt combination serves to tighten the flanges That end of the bolt that is not shown may be permanently secured to the lower surface of the bottom flange.
- the tightening channel and channel are between the curved ends and the staff engaging portion. This is so that the curved ends can be easily removed from the shaft (by unloosening the wing nut) for attachment onto another golf shaft.
- the tightening bolt was to the outside of the club shaft channel. This channel was between the tightening bolt and staff end so that the entire device had to be either moved over the length of the shaft or the bolt completely removed to remove the device from a club.
- the bolt is un-tightened and the shaft can come out laterally from the shaft engaging channel without having to move the device.
- the shaft engaging portion is then placed around another shaft and tightened securely. Then it is ready to use again.
