Definitions
- the present invention relates to an arrangement in code- protected electronic apparatus or appliances, such as television sets, video machines, computers and the like, said arrangement be ⁇ ing intended to encode for protection the appliance or appliances located within the perimeters of a predetermined delimited area, the arrangement employing a transmitter adapted to emit at least one predetermined code signal and a receiver mounted in said elec ⁇ tronic appliance or appliances to bring about that the appliance or appliances within said area become operable by receiving said at least one code signal emitted from the transmitter, said appli ⁇ ance or appliances being inoperable within as well as without said area where there is no coded signal from the transmitter.
- EP-A-o 350 119 relates to a separate electronic unit which can be encoded and which creates disturbances when illegally used.
- EP-A o 410 193 discloses a car cassette radio having an en- codable section. In these apparatus a separate encoding and decod ⁇ ing section is integrated, which is a costly solution in such cases when several electronic appli ances are to be protected by this method.
- the signal source 5 emits a signal which has a certain range of radius 10, said sig ⁇ nal activating the appliances, which have been electronically pre ⁇ pared by an integrated receiver and are situated within the range of said radius, to be directly operable. If, on the other hand, an appliance is moved outside the range of the signal (beyond radius 10), or if the transmitter is moved away or cut off, the appliance will be inoperable.
- this arrangement is not suitable to apply in a house with several premises or apartments, as the transmitter might emit code signals to adjacent apartments and then interfere with appliances in these apartments. In this case the code can also be received outside the area concerned which makes it possible that the code can be read by unauthorized per ⁇ sons who, after having learnt the code, can steal the appliances located within the area and then simply decode them.
- US-A-4 755 792 discloses a system where the power network within a specified area has been provided with a transmitter hav ⁇ ing a receiver device connected to a door and special coded relay modules provided at each power outlet, so that changes in the sys ⁇ tem can be monitored and alarm sounded.
- This system does not in ⁇ tend to code-protect in particular the appliances located within a limited area, rather to tell whether any unit has been tampered with, not to say stolen.
- the present invention has for its object to provide an ar ⁇ rangement of the kind mentioned in the introduction and which can be applied, while eliminating the above mentioned inconveniences, within a predetermined area without interfering with electronic apparatus outside this area.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement which makes it practically impossible for an unauthor ⁇ ized person to receive, outside the predetermined limited area, the encoded signal or signals and decode the arrangement. Thus it should not be possible to execute a direct decoding operation out ⁇ side said area.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide an ar ⁇ rangement which is reliable as to its operation and design.
- Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic view of an installation, e.g. in an apartment or a house, employing an arrangement ac- cording to the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows a diagrammatic view similar to that of Fig. 1 of another installation, e.g. in a company office, in ⁇ cluding an arrangement according to the invention.
- Fig. 1 there is shown an arrangement according to the invention, comprising a filter 1 connected in that part of the in ⁇ coming power mains 2 which covers a limited area 3, such as an apartment or a house, preferably in association with the fuse cab ⁇ inet (not shown) related to the area, a transmitter or signal source 4 having a built-in encoding section 5, such as a keyboard or the like, in order to allow the user to encode and decode in a simple manner the electronic appliances 6 connected within the signal field of the transmitter, and a receiver 7 for each elec ⁇ tronic appliance 6 located within the area.
- the appli ⁇ ances 6 comprise a stereo unit including two separate apparatuses (top) and a television set (bottom).
- the receivers 7 are enclosed into the electronic appliances. This internal mounting can be car ⁇ ried out either already at the factory during manufacture or af ⁇ terwards in existing appliances.
- the filter 1 mentioned above is provided in order that the coded signal emitted from the transmit- er into the network be prevented from entering into the public network.
- FIG. 2 an arrangement according to the invention is shown, provided in an office or similar premises. Details in Fig. 2 corresponding to those of Fig. 1 have been given the same refer ⁇ ence characters. This limited area 8 differs from that shown i- Fig. 1 by the fact that the electronic appliances 6 consist of ap ⁇ paratus generally occurring in an office, such as computers and copying machines.
- the electronic protection is intended to render electronic appliances or equipment, such as television sets, stereo units, computers etc., unattractive to thieves.
- the electronic protection is to function such that the unit to be protected is able to oper ⁇ ate where it is installed, but if it is moved from the home, the company office etc. it will become inoperable.
- the function of the electronic protection is thus based on two units primarily, that is, the transmitter 4 and the receiver 7.
- the transmit ⁇ ter emits an opening code (0-code) imposed on the mains voltage.
- the receiver which is enclosed in the unit to be protected, senses the 0-code the machine will become operable.
- unit refers to the theft-prone object, such as an electronic apparatus or equipment which is to be protected by code.
- the transmitter is placed where the mains voltage enters a predetermined limited area, such as the home, the enterprise or any part of such an area for which protection is desired.
- a predetermined limited area such as the home, the enterprise or any part of such an area for which protection is desired.
- the transmitter When the transmitter is activated by an authorized person it emits an 0- code.
- the transmitter can emit a programming command to the receiver. This command will be described in greater detail below.
- the transmitter shall also have the possibility to prevent those codes emitted internally in the protected area 3, 8 from leaking out from the system. This in order to prevent interference between two adjacent transmitters. This is most simply carried out by means of the filter 1 between transmitter 4 and the mains 2 en ⁇ tering the area 3, 6 (e. g. at a fuse cabinet/central), or by us ⁇ ing frequencies of short range.
- the code is emitted superposed the mains voltage by means of e.g. frequency modulation or some other method of modulating.
- the frequency range of the modulated code should be se ⁇ lected such that it does not interfere with broadcasting, avia ⁇ tion, navigation or other radio communication.
- Suitable frequen ⁇ cies are: 90-150 kHz (simple circuitry, comparatively large fil ⁇ ters), or 300-500 MHz (complex circuitry, no or simple filters thanks to short range).
- EN50065, Part 1 gives recommendations for this very type of commu nication.
- the receiver 7 is enclosed into the unit 6 to be protect ⁇ ed, e.g. in the power pack thereof.
- the receiver demands that an 0-code arrives in order that it will allow the unit to operate.
- the receiver 7 can be a separate module which is mounted in an ex ⁇ isting unit 6 to be protected.
- This module can be, for example, a special rectifier containing a customized IC-circuit and tyristors demanding the 0-code in order to let current through.
- the receiver 7 can as well be integrated into the unit already when delivered from the factory. In such a case the receiver can also block other functions of unit 6 instead of its power supply.
- the receiver 7 can also be extensively integrated with the other electronics of unit 6. In this case it can be made impossible to remove protec ⁇ tion. Such effect can be attained, for example, by arranging that all of the protection, or a part thereof, is residing in a section of a component which has other vital functions. Examples of such components are microprocessors and customized IC-circuits.
- a unit 6 provided with receiver When a unit 6 provided with receiver is new, it is also uncoded. The same is true for the receiver which is enclosed la ⁇ ter. The means for electronic protection is thus at hand but it is not activated. The user can buy a device having protection built- -in without using it; he knows that the protective unit is "rig ⁇ ged" but he need never to activate it. But if he obtains a trans ⁇ mitter and a filter and connect them to his home or enterprise he can activate the receiver 7 and code-protect his units 6. If en ⁇ coding takes place during operation the unit will not be affected. For instance, encoding can be carried out during video tape re ⁇ cording or while operating a computer system.
- the re ⁇ barrever When the transmitter emits a programming command the re ⁇ barrever will sense this and execute programming of the 0-code, pos ⁇ sibly also of a safety code (S-code).
- S-code is used later to prevent unauthorized deprogramming. In this course protection will be activated, that is, an O-code must be available in the net in order that starting the unit be possible.
- the programming is to activate protection and store the O-code. The following procedure is an example of how this can be carried out:
- the user punches his personal code on the keyboard 5 of the transmitter 4. This code is the only one the user needs to know. Thereupon the user presses the programming button and the transmitter will emit the programming command, e.g. a series of logic zeros.
- the transmitter 4 emits an O-code, possibly also a S-code. Both codes are stored in the receiver.
- the storing medium can be an EEPROM in a customized chip, or some other storing means avail ⁇ able in the unit. The unit is now protected, and in order to oper ⁇ ate it requires that an O-code appears on the network.
- the unit can also be deprogrammed in order to make it pos ⁇ sible to use it elsewhere.
- the deprogramming should inactivate the protective means so that the unit 6 will behave as having no elec ⁇ tronic protection at all. This function must be protected against unauthorized use.
- Protection can also be arranged such that it is programmed through a specified input connection.
- the trans ⁇ mitter is connected to this input of the unit.
- the procedure could be conducted as shown above.
- the user should choose to apply the arrangement accord- ing to the invention he also orders the transmitter 4 with key ⁇ board 5.
- the transmitter is provided with the customer's own per ⁇ sonal safety code and will then generate S-code and O-code in ac ⁇ cordance with a method of random numbers.
- the customer's personal code is necessary in order to bring the transmitter to generate off/on programming commands and to start the O-code of the trans ⁇ mitter after shut-down or extended current interruption (e.g. upon theft of the transmitter).
- new units e.g. computors
- the pro ⁇ tective means operates exactly as in the unit protected at the factory.
- the transmitter unit is installed and provided with an authorized personal code. Thereafter the unit generates the codes necessary and emits them over the network.
- the system is now pro ⁇ tected.
- each unit of the system is protected and will be inoperable as soon as it has been moved out of the system.
- each unit should be marked with a decal which cannot be removed.
- An ad ⁇ equate text would be: "This unit is electronically protected and cannot be used outside area XXYY".
- the transmitter 4 can be made susceptible to cur- rent interruption. If the transmitter is removed from the net and does not obtain voltage within a certain time, e.g. six hours, it will be impossible to start without the authorized personal code. This will be true also at current interruption longer than this time. It could also be possible to design the transmitter as a portable unit. This can then be connected e.g. to the mains of the area 3, 8 by way of a wall mains socket. Such a transmitter unit can e.g. be brought along if one leaves the area, or it can be hidden, which will make it more difficult for a thief to decipher the code.
- Such a transmitter unit can also be moved between vari ⁇ ous areas, delimited by filters 1, of a supply net 2.
- filters 1, of a supply net 2 In this case a filter 1 and receivers in the units are mounted in the intended •areas, and they are coded for protection by means of the same transmitter unit. Examples of such areas are the home, the company office, or home plus summer house.
