Description

DEVICE FOR COLLECTING WASTE
The present invention relates to a device for collecting and temporarily storing waste, such as for example dogs' excrement or cigarette butts.
Some prior art arrangements for dealing with waste, such as variations on the dustpan-and-brush theme, necessitate the operator getting closer to the waste than might otherwise be desired. These arrangements also often do not provide convenient means for storing the waste until it can be properly disposed.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device for collecting and temporarily storing waste, which is also convenient to carry.
In a first aspect, the present invention provides a device for collecting waste comprising an elongate member having a handle disposed at one end, and a receptacle including a closure means, disposed at the distal end thereof; an actuator located generally at said one end and adapted to actuate the closure means so as to open and substantially close the receptacle, the closure means thereby operating in use to encase waste within the receptacle on actuation of the actuator.
In a second aspect, the present invention provides a device for collecting waste comprising an elongate membe having a handle disposed at one end, and a receptacl including a closure means, disposed at the distal en thereof; an actuator located generally at said one end an adapted to actuate the closure means so as to open an substantially close the receptacle, the closure means i use being operable to move waste into the receptacle whe moving from the open position to the closed position. The device is preferably made from plastic.
The closure means may be in the form of a flap.
Preferably the closure means is in the form of a slide having at least a first wall operable to drag waste into the receptacle during the closure of the receptacle and which forms a closure member for the receptacle.
The elongate member may be tubular and have an umbrella mounted therein.
The device may have a handle which is adapted to be used as a seat.
The device may further includes means exterior to the receptacle, such as a spike, adjacent the receptacle for collecting litter.
When the elongate member is sufficiently long, it is an advantage of the present invention that the device is easily usable without the operator having to get within arms length of the waste.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of the embodiment;
Figure 2a shows a plan view of a slide in isolation from the rest of the device;
Figure 2b shows a sectional view through the slide and the receptacle;
Figures 3(a), 3(b) and 3(c) show schematics of the device shown in Figure 1 being used in various stages of operation, and
Figure 4 shows a side view of an alternative embodiment of the invention.
A device for collecting waste, generally denoted 1, has a handle 5 in the form of a transverse bar disposed at one end of an elongate member 3 and a receptacle 7 disposed at the opposite end thereof. The receptacle is in the form of a box, open at one end, having curved top and bottom walls with a flange 8 protruding from the bottom wall. A slide 9, in the form of a box open at the top and bottom, having a bottom contour of similar shape and dimensions to the bottom surface of the receptacle 7, a first front wall 10(a) and a second inwardly spaced rear wall 10(b), is slidably mounted in the receptacle 7.
The device 1 is further provided with an actuator 11 for moving the slide 9 relative to the receptacle 7. The actuator 11 includes a straight, rigid, actuating member 13 which passes through an eyelet 4, and is coupled at a first end, for example by a universal coupling 12, to a curved connecting member 17 (also part of the actuator) , the curve of which is similar to that of the top and bottom of the receptacle 7, the actuating member 13 being further connected at a second opposite end to one end of a spring 15. The other end of the spring 15 is fixedly attached near to a point on the elongate member 3. The actuator 11 is also provided with an actuating handle 19 attached to the actuating member 13. The actuator 11 is fixedly attached to the device 1 at one end to the slide 9 via the curved connecting member 17, and at the other end via the eyelet 4.
Figures 3(a) to 3(c) show the device l in operation picking up excrement 100. Figure 3(a) shows the device 1 in its closed state in the vicinity of the excrement 100. Figure 3(b) shows the actuator in its actuated state with the slide 9 protruding from the receptacle, and bein positioned above the excrement 100. In this state, th actuator handle 19 has been pushed in the direction of th arrow A, thereby tensioning the spring 15 and moving th actuating rod 13 in the direction A. As a result of th universal coupling 12 between the actuating rod 13 and th connecting member, the angle therebetween is allowed t vary such that the slide 9 experiences a force which a least in the main is in its direction of movement C.
The device 9 is tilted in the direction B such tha the excrement is trapped within the slide 9 and th actuator 11 is then deactivated thereby dragging th excrement 100 back into the receptacle 7 using the firs wall 10(a) as shown in figure 3(c).
In order to empty the receptacle 7, the abov described procedure is reversed, the second inward wal 10(b) then serving to propel the excrement 100 out of th receptacle.
The curvature of the bottom of the receptacle facilitates the use of the device by the operator in hi normal standing posture.
It i« an advantage of the described embodiment of th invention, that it can conveniently be used as a walkin stick. In a further embodiment of the invention, the elongate member 3 may in the form of a tube having an telescopic umbrella disposed therein. In still a further embodiment of the invention, the handle may be adapted to serve as a seat.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, which is shown in Figure 4, a modified actuator is depicted. Similar parts have been given the same reference numerals. This actuator, again generally denoted 11, comprises a trigger member 20, a composite actuating member, having a first portion 13a connected to the trigger member, a second portion 13b connected to a connecting member 17, which is also part of the actuator, and a pivot member 13c connecting the first and second portions 13a,13b. The first portion 13a is retained in a plane substantially parallel to the elongate member 3 by clips 22 which prohibit movement of the first portion 13a transverse to the axis of the elongate member 3 but permit movement parallel thereto. The pivot member 13c pivots about a pivot point 24 disposed on the elongate member 3 and is attached at one end thereof to one end of a spring 15, the other end of the spring 15 being attached to the elongate member 3. The spring 15 is arranged such that in the absence of user-applied external forces to the device 1, the pivot member 13c is biased into a predetermined position in which the receptacle 3 is closed. As depicted in Figure 4, a force is being applied to the trigger member 20 in the direction indicated by the arrow C, whereby the trigger member 20 has been moved in the direction C towards the handle 5. In this state, the force being applied to the trigger member 20, and thereafter, transmitted through the first portion 13a to the pivot 13c is sufficient to overcome the biasing action of the spring 15, and hence the second portion 13b is in a position which causes the slide 9 to protrude from the receptacle 3.
Once the applied force is removed from the trigger member 20, the biasing action of the spring 15 causes the trigger member 20 to return to its position immediately adjacent the clips 22 and the slide 9 to return to the interior of the receptacle 3 to close the latter.
It will have been noticed that in this embodiment of the invention, the handle 5 and the trigger member 20 have both been provided with indentations to facilitate the handling thereof.
In this embodiment of the invention, the handle 5 and the trigger member 20 extend vertically when the device 1 is oriented for use. In a further alternative embodiment, in a similar orientation, the handle 5 and the trigger member may extend in a substantially horizontal plane. It will be appreciated that the alternative embodiment of Figure 4, apart from the actuator 11, is identical in all respects to the embodiment featured in Figures 1 to 3 and would be used in exactly the same way.
