A web (1) of unextendible material is formed with a number of successive, spaced-apart carrier members (4). A friction material (5) is applied to each carrier member to form a band of interconnected friction elements. The invention also relates to a method, in the automated manufacture of clothes hangers, which uses the band of friction elements for attaching these on selected portions of the clothes hanger. The invention further relates to a band of friction elements, and to the friction elements themselves.

Description

FRICTION ELEMENTS TO BE ATTACHED TO A CLOTHES HANGER FOR RETAINING A GARMENT THEREON, AND A METHOD
FOR MAKING SUCH FRICTION ELEMENTS The invention relates to a method for making friction elements to be attached to the parts of a clothes hanger which are intended to support a garment. The invention also relates to a method, in the automated manufacture of clothes hangers, for providing friction surfaces on the parts of the clothes hanger which are intended to support a garment. The invention further relates to a band of friction elements, and to the friction elements themselves.
Today's clothes hangers have a partly different function than yesterday's hangers. Thus, the clothes hanger now accompanies the garment from the factory, through the wholesaler and the retailer, to the consumer. This places high demands on the clothes hanger, not only in terms of physical properties but also in terms of its ability to retain the garment supported on it. Today's fashion often means low-cut garments, which increases the risk of the garment sliding off the hanger. Further, new textile fibres have been developed which slip more easily on the hanger.
Several approaches have been tried to solve the problem of inadequate retention of the garment on the hanger.
A first solution is to subject a portion of the hanger to photoetching so as to provide a rough or knurled surface. However, this yields no satisfactory result, since the knurled surface consists of the same smooth material as the rest of the hanger.
A second solution is to spray or paint dissolved synthetic rubber on selected portions of the hanger. Althoug this solution provides a surface having improved resistance to sliding, it suffers from several drawbacks. Thus, dissolved synthetic rubber gives rise to environmental problems. Also, the clothes hanger becomes unaesthetic. This technique entails much waste of material, and thus is uneconomical. Finally, the finished hangers will not have a uniform quality.
A third solution is to manufacture the hanger in two steps. In the first step, the hanger body is injection- moulded. In the second step, the hanger is moved to another mould, in which thermoplastic rubber is sprayed onto selected portions of the hanger. The use of two moulds makes this solution less cost-effective.
A fourth solution is to manually pull separate friction elements of rubber over the hanger. It is easily understood that this solution is both expensive and not very practical.
The object of the invention is to provide a method by means of which, in the automated manufacture of
clothes hangers, the hanger is provided with friction surfaces which reduce the risk of the garment sliding off the hanger.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the methods stated by way of introduction, and by means of a band of friction elements and by means of friction elements, having the features recited in the characterising clauses of the accompanying claims 1, 6, 7 and 11, respectively.
The main advantage of the invention is that it makes it possible, in a cost-effective way, to produce friction surfaces on clothes hanger during the automated manufacture thereof. This advantage largely derives from the fact that the friction material is supported by an unextendible carrier member suited for feeding through a manufacturing machine.
The invention will be described in more detail hereinafter in an embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a band of friction elements according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a clothes hanger provided with friction elements according to an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line III-III in Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 schematically illustrates how a band of friction elements is produced according to a first embodiment of the invention. To this end, a polystyrene sheeting 1 is unwound from a supply roll for the intended treatment.
Other materials, which are adapted to the clothes hanger material in view of the subsequent fixing of the friction element on the hanger, may be used, such as polypropylene. Preferably, the roll is provided with guide holes 2 along the long side edges of the sheeting 1. These holes are used for feeding the sheeting, both during the treatment thereof and in connection with the succeeding fixing of the friction elements on the clothes hanger.
In a punching station, rectangular strips are punched out to form recesses 3 in the sheeting. These recesses extend in the transverse direction of the sheeting, and end at a distance from each long side edge of the sheeting, whereby to form long side edge portions 8. As is apparent, these portions contain the above-mentioned guid holes 2. The material remaining between adjoining recesse 3 form strip-shaped carrier members 4.
In a subsequent injection-moulding station, a thermo- plastic rubber 5 is sprayed onto and round the carrier members 4. By allowing the rubber to extend underneath the carrier member in the direction of its thickness, it is possible to achieve guide means which may prove useful when the friction elements are subsequently applied to the clothes hanger. Also, there will be no sharp edges that might tear loose fibres in a garment.
Optionally, it is possible, prior to injection moulding, to shape the carrier member after the shape of the clothes hanger to which the friction element is to be applied.
The injection moulding yields a number of juxtaposed friction elements which are connected at each end to the long side edge portions 8 of the sheeting. The completed band of friction elements is thereafter wound into a roll. Alternatively, the band may be cut into sheets of friction elements.
It will be appreciated that the punching can be carried out in many different ways. The location and the orientation of the friction elements in the band may be varied.
In an alternative embodiment, a roll with labels which are detachably fixed on a release strip can be used. The band of friction elements is produced by injection- moulding thermoplastic rubber on each label. In this manner, there is obtained a number of friction elements detachably fixed on the release strip. One advantage of this embodiment is that the label may serve as an information carrier, e.g. for advertising purposes. In this case, transparent thermoplastic rubber is used.
The manufacture of a clothes hanger with friction elements is carried out in the following manner.
The roll of the band of friction elements is inter- mittently fed to an applying station. Simultaneously, clothes hangers, which have been injection-moulded in a previous stage of the manufacturing process, are intermittently fed to the applying station. A suitable robot ensures that friction elements are applied on selected areas of the clothes hanger and are attached thereto. The robot itself is no part of the invention and will therefore not be described in more detail here. The fixing of the friction elements may take place in different ways.
The friction element can be glued or welded to the clothes hanger. Ultrasonic technique can be used. In the embodiment with labels provided on a release strip, the glue on the label is used for attaching the friction element on the clothes hanger.
When using the embodiment of Fig. 1, the friction elements are severed from the band of friction elements in connection with the fixing thereof on the clothes hanger.
The method now described is highly versatile. Thus, for example, the surface of the friction element can be given different configurations, e.g. be provided with grooves or notches in different patterns. Moreover, as indicated above, the thermoplastic rubber can be given different colours and dimensions.
