Description
Tool for supporting a body with a coil of a continuous flexible object
The present invention relates to a tool for supporting a body having central openings at each end and comprising a coil of a continuous, flexible object consisting of cable, line, wire, wire cable, rope, cord, ribbon, hosing, chain or the like, a sleeve having a central through hole and forming the core of the coil, and protective discs that protect the coil laterally, said tool comprising two stand members, each having an outer support element intended to rest against a support, and a hub with central hole; a connecting means for assembling the stand members together with said body located therebetween, said connecting means comprising a shaft arranged to extend through the coaxial holes of the sleeve and the stand members, each stand member including journalling means for rotatably journalling said body in relation to the outer support element.
SE-9101042-1 describes a new system for handling cable and line, for instance, said handling starting with the manufacture of a coil of cable or line and enveloping the coil to form a parcel for delivery to a user. The coil is obtained by the cable or line being coiled onto an axially open, cylindrical sleeve. Before coiling is performed, the sleeve is provided with two flat, outer protective rings having concentric support surfaces cooperating with opposing internal or external surfaces of the sleeve, depending on the type of protective rings used. The sleeve is secured by a tool having two parallel side supports with concentric centering elements facing each other so that the sleeve is clamped between the side supports and is centered by their centering elements, a rotatable unit thus being formed. The cable or line is then attached to this unit which is caused to rotate in a coiling machine so that the cable or line is formed to a
coil. The finished coil is surrounded by a protective casing, after which strong bands are passed through the sleeve, enclosing the sleeve and the protective rings, and tightened to form said parcel. The side supports are removed from the finished parcel to be used in the manufacture of further coils. The finished parcel is delivered in this state to a work place where a second tool is mounted onto the parcel to prepare for unwinding the cable or line. The tool and parcel now form a second rotatable unit which is then journalled for free rotation about a horizontal axis of rotation in a special uncoiling device. When the bands have been cut and the protecting casing removed, the cable or line is exposed so that uncoiling can be started. Thus the rotatable unit assembled in the field requires a special uncoiling device to enable rotation of the unit containing the coil. Mounting the unit in the uncoiling device is hard work and time consuming. Furthermore, the uncoiling stand must be moved from one work site to another as the work of laying cables or line proceeds. This is also hard work and time consuming and is often made more difficult due to rough terrain.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tool intended for field use, which will eliminate the need for access to a special uncoiling stand for uncoiling cable or line, for instance, or other continuous object from said body.
The invention is substantially characterized in that each stand member is also provided with an inner support element intended to keep said body off the ground, said inner support element comprising a concentric, axial centering means arranged to be brought into engagement with the body at its opposite central opening, and a radial support means arranged to be brought into abutment with the protective discs of the body, and that the inner
support element is in the form of a rotatably journalled support wheel with a hub, said journalling means including the hub of said support wheel and the hub of said outer support element.
The invention will be described in more detail in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a.body with coil and of a tool according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of one of the stand members of the tool according to Figure 1 seen from the inside.
The tool shown in the drawings is designed to support a body 1 comprising a coil 2 of a continuous object 3 comprising cable, line, wire, wire cable, rope, cord, ribbon, hosing, chain or similar objects easily bent to coil form, a sleeve 4 having a central through hole 5 and forming the core of the coil, and two protective discs 6, 7. The coil body 1 has central openings 8, 9 at each side. Ir the embodiment shown, these central openings are defined by the inner side 10 of the end portions of the core. Alternatively each such central opening may be defined by the inner side of a concentric axial flange (not shown) on the protective discs, which flange is received in the sleeve with friction-fit. The drum-like coil body has been delivered in the form of a parcel with a protective casing of disposable material surrounding the coil, and a plurality of bands surrounding the coil, sleeve, side protection pieces and protective casing, so that the side protection pieces 6, 7 are pressed against the coil 2 and the turns of the object 3 are fixed to each other. When the tool has been assembled on the parcel, said bands are cut and removed together with the protective casing so that said coil body 1 is formed, and the object 3 is ready for uncoiling.
The tool comprises two identical, circular, form stable stand member 11, 12 of metal such as steel or aluminium, and an oblong connecting means 13 of metal to fix the stand members 11, 12 in relation to each other. The connecting means 13 is suitably provided with an axial central through hole and consists of a shaft 14, e.g. a pipe, of predetermined length, and two locking devices 15, 16, each with external threading and a wheel to facilitate turning the locking devices 15, 16. The shaft 14 is provided with internal threading at its ends, with which the threading on the locking devices 15, 16 is brought into engagement. One of the locking devices may alternatively be replaced with a counter flange rigidly- connected to the shaft. Each stand member 11, 12 comprises an outer support element 17, intended to rest against the ground or some other support, and an inner support element 18 intended to keep the coil body 1 (and said parcel initially) off the ground. The outer support element 17 of the stand member is in the form of a wheel and includes a peripheral, stable, circular ring 19 of a tube, a hub 20 and a plurality of spokes 21 that support and center the hub 20 and define between them large openings 22, thus saving weight and material. The hub 20 has a central hole 23, the diameter of which is adapted to the diameter of the shaft 14 allowing it to be passed slidably through the central hole 23 without clearance appearing between the sliding surfaces which might deteriorate the stability or centering.
The inner support element 18 of the stand members 11, 12 also is in the form of a wheel and includes a centering means 24 which is axial and concentric with the central axis of the stand member and has a predetermined axial length and predetermined radius to be received in said central openings 8, 9 of the sleeve 4 of the coil body 1. The centering means 24 shown is in the form of an axial unbroken ring. The inner support element 18 also includes
a radial support means 25 arranged to be brought into abutment with the protective discs 6, 7 of the body 1 when the stand members 11, 12 are pulled towards each other by means of the connecting means 13. The support means 25 shown is in the form of a radial ring for abutment against the radially outer sides of the protective discs 6, 7. The support ring 25 is thus located radially outside the centering ring 24 and forms an L-shaped cross section therewith. The inner support element 18 has a hub 26 and a plurality of spokes 27 in the form of flat bars supporting the centering ring 24 and support ring 25 which is at a distance from the outer support element 17 to avoid contact.
According to the invention the stand members 11, 12 comprise journalling means 28 arranged to enable the coil body 1 to rotate in r-elation to the outer support elements 17 of the stand members 11, 12, said support elements 17 being fixed in suitable manner on the ground, e.g. by wedge blocks, to keep them stationary while the inner support elements are rotating. Each such journalling means comprises the two hubs 20 and 26 described above, the hub 20 consisting of a concentric sleeve 29 of such length that it extends a little way past the hub 26 of the inner support element 18, and an outer ring 30 rigidly connected to the sleeve 29 and the spokes 21 of the outer support element 17. The outer ring 30, sleeve 29 and hub 26 between them define a bearing housing for an axial bearing 31 which may consist of a ball bearing as shown, or roller bearing. Axially inside the hub 26 is a stop in the form of a locking ring 32 rigidly connected to the sleeve 29 by means of a suitable locking device. The hub 26 consists of an axial, i.e. cylindrical, ring, the side sections of which are received in corresponding recesses in the outer ring 30 and the locking ring 32. A radial bearing 33 is arranged between the hub ring 26 and the sleeve 29, said radial
bearing enabling the inner support element 18, and thus the coil body 1, to rotate in relation to the outer support elements 17 of the stand parts 11, 12. The radial bearing 33 may consist of a sliding bearing, e.g. a ring of a suitable plastic material. A sliding bearing may also be arranged between the hub ring 26 and the fixed locking ring 33 if desired, to reduce the friction between these elements.
According to an alternative embodiment (not shown) the outer support elements may be polygonal, e.g. rectangular, suitable quadratic, or triangular, in which case one of the sides may be in the form of skids or be provided with wheels, these being suitable lockable. Thanks to the skids or wheels the finished coil stand device can easily be moved from a special assembly place to a desired uncoiling place out in the field.
According to a further embodiment the outer support elements are divided into a larger and a smaller segment, in which case the dividing edges are located outside the support rings 25 but between these and respective protective discs 6, 7 so that the protective discs of a coil parcel can rest on the ground while the tool is being assembled on to a parcel standing upright. The smaller segments are applied or placed and locked in the plane of the larger segments after the stand members have been pulled together by the connecting means 13 to an axially fixed position.
