Description

DEVICE FOR FASTENING AN ARTIFICIAL VAGINA
The object of the invention is a device used in animal breeding and intended to be fastened to a dummy, which device allows flexible movements directed into the artificial vagina in serving, and the use of the said device.
Artificial insemination is used increasingly often in modern horse breeding. In Finland, for example, some 3000 mares are inseminated artificially each year. At artificial insemination centres, the semen of the breeder is usually collected by using an artificial vagina and a dummy horse. In this case one person is required to hold the stallion and another to hold the artificial vagina in order to carry out the procedure. If a so-called open artificial vagina is used, yet another person will be needed to collect the semen with a collection funnel. In this method the artificial vagina is either held by hand, or fixed solidly to the dummy horse, or the fastening to the dummy horse is arranged so that it allows movements upwards, downwards, to the right and to the left, directed into the artificial vagina. The aim of the method has been to facilitate the recovery of horse semen.
The disadvantage of the foregoing known device is that it does not allow movement of the artificial vagina in the direction of its longitudinal axis. From this it follows that not all stallions ejaculate when an artificial vagina is used, although they push the penis into the artificial vagina.
The aim of this invention is to eliminate the above- mentioned problem and to achieve a new device, which does not have the above disadvantage.
It is characteristic of the invention that the fastening device is preferably connected in the area of that end of the artificial vagina, which is fastened by its jacket tube, remaining inside the dummy, by means of a first transverse flexible element to the frame of the dummy, and at the outwards directed end of the artificial vagina, the said fastening device is connected to a second, longitudinal flexible element, in order to achieve movement of the artificial vagina corresponding to natural movement, which is horizontal and parallel with the longitudinal axis.
By means of the invention a fastening device is achieved, which makes possible the movement of the artificial vagina, fastened to the device, in a manner resembling the natural movement of a vagina. Similarly, it is characteristic of the use of the device relating to the invention that, by means of the fastening device, the artificial vagina is easy to fasten and remove for servicing and for use independent of the dummy horse.
The invention is described in the following with examples, with reference to the appended drawings, in which
Figure 1 shows the device relating to the invention as seen from the side and as a partial cross-section.
Figure 2 shows the device of figure 1 when fastened on the dummy horse.
Figure 1 shows a fastening device 12 supporting an artificial vagina 13, as seen from the side and as a partial cross-section. The fastening device 12 is connected in the area of that end 70 of the artificial vagina 13, which is fastened by its jacket tube, remaining inside the dummy, by means of a first transverse flexible element, to the frame 10' of the dummy. The outwards directed end 72 of the artificial vagina 13 is similarly connected to a second, longitudinal flexible element 24 in order to achieve movement of the artificial vagina corresponding to natural movement, which is horizontal and parallel with the longitudinal axis.
The first flexible element 14 is a flexibly bending element made entirely of rubber, of rubber parts joined together, or of corresponding materials, and the second flexible element 24 is a flexible tube 24' made of rubber or similar flexible material, which is fastened at its inner end 80 to the ringed holder 48 of the frame 44 of the fastening device 12, and at its outer end 82, to the ringed holder 48' of the dummy frame 10, and is tightened between them so that it remains smooth while the artificial vagina 13 moves during serving. The outer end 72 of the artificial vagina 13 fits accurately inside the inner ringed holder 48, in which case the flexible tube 24' at the same time forms a vaginal opening 54, as an extension to the artificial vagina 13.
The flexible element 24 is fastened to the ringed holder 48' of the dummy horse frame 10 and to the ringed holder 48 of the frame 44 of the fastening device 12 with tighteners 59 and 59'. The flexible element 14 is similarly connected with fasteners 69 to the frame part 10' of the dummy horse and to the frame 44 of the fastening device 12.
When the artificial vagina 13 is fixed to the frame 44 of the fastening device 12, the lock clasp 15 of the locking latch 16 of the fastening device 12 is opened, whereupon the lower part of the locking latch 16, which divides into two parts and is hinged by means of a hinge 58, falls downwards supported on the hinge 58, the outer end 72 of the artificial vagina 13 is pushed into the rear part of the frame 44 of the fastening device 12, into the opening encircled by the holder 48, and the other end 70 of the artificial vagina is locked by means of the lock clasp 15 of the locking latch 16, to the fastening device 12.
Figure 2 shows the fastening device 12 when fastened to the skeleton part of the dummy horse frame 10, as seen obliquely from below. A fastening device 12 is fixed to the frame 10 of the dummy horse, to which fastening device are connected flexible elements 14 and 24, which allow the natural-like movement of the artificial vagina 13 between the frame 10 of the dummy horse and the frame part 10' . The tubular flexible element 24, made of resilient, rubber-like material, is fastened to the frame 44 of the device 12 by means of the holder 48, and similarly, by means of the holder 48' to the frame 10 of the dummy horse. The flexible elements 14 and 24 allow movement of the frame 12 of the artificial vagina sideways and in the direction of the longitudinal axis. The flexible element 14 is connected with fasteners 69 to the frame part 10' of the dummy horse, and to the frame 44 of the fastening device 12. The artificial vagina 13 is fixed to the device 12 by opening the lock clasp 15, whereupon the lower part of the locking latch 16, which divides into two parts and is hinged by means of a hinge 58, falls downwards supported on the hinge 58. The artificial vagina is pushed into the rear part of the frame 44, into the opening encircled by the holder 48 and is locked at the front by means of the lock clasp 15 of the locking latch 16. The outer end 72 of the artificial vagina 13 fits accurately inside the inner ringed holder 48, in which case the flexible tube 24' at the same time forms a vaginal opening 54, as an extension to the artificial vagina 13.
It is obvious to one skilled in the art that the different embodiments of the invention may vary within the scope of the claims presented below.
