- an operating handle associated with such a lock mechanism may sag when installed or after a period of time.
- Some handles are specifically designed, particular for aesthetic reasons, to operate from a horizontal resting position. Sagging in such a handle creates an unsightly and undesireable condition.
- the invention provides a lock or latch mechanism having parallel base plates and a face plate, the face plate having a passage in it through which protrudes a latch bolt, the latch or bolt operated by mechanical components comprising at least one lever follower having an aperture formed therein, characterized by: the lever follower having a radial extension; the face plate having an opening through which passes an adjusting screw; the adjusting screw engaging the radial extension of the lever fol lower.

- the aperture 17 is configured to transmit torque from the handle shaft to the lever follower 15. Generally, this means that the aperture 17 will be square or include corners.
- the raised portions 16 of the lever followers 15 rests within an aperture 18 in each base plate 11.
- a bushing 19 extends between the lever followers 15. To facilitate assembly, the bushing 19 is provided in nesting halves 20, 21.
- a latching plate 22 is rotatably mounted around the bushing 19 but is otherwise restrained between tne bushing halves by the end face of one bushing 21 and a shoulder 22 located on the other half 21.
- the latching plate 22 includes a Din 23 wnich extends from the latching plate 22 towards each base plate 11.
- the latching pin 23 is engageable by a hook shaped portion 24 of the lever follower. It will be seen, with reference to Figure 1, that when a handle passing through the aperture 17 is rotated sufficiently, the hook shaped portion 24 will engage the pin 23, thus urging the latch plate 22 against an extension 25 of the bolt 14, thus retracting it.
- a return spring 26. ancnored to a post 27 and wrapped around the bushing 19 may be used tc i 1973 upon the pin 23, thus urging the latch plate 22 back into its resting position.
- an adjusting screw 30 which passes through the face plate 13 and engages at least one of the lever followers 15. This engagement is preferably accomplished by providing an adjusting nut 31 having a central threaded aperture formed therein and extending between the base plates 11.
- the adjusting nut 31 preferably includes laterally extending ears 32 which ride in slots 33 formed in the base plates.
- a radially extending portion 34 of at least one of the lever followers is gripped between the adjustment nut 31 and a bushing 35 which is located around the adjusting screw 30.
- a compression spring 36 urges the radial extension 34 against the adjusting nut 31.
- the radial extension 31 may include a rounded periphery 37 to ensure that smooth contact is maintained with respect to the bushing and adjustment nut, during all phases of adjustment and rotation of the lever follower. Other forms of engagement are also contemplated.

Abstract
Mécanisme de verrouillage (10) comprenant un verrou glissant (14) que l'on actionne par la rotation d'une poignée. Ladite poignée fait tourner une tige qui passe dans la gâchette à levier. Une vis d'arrêt (30) passe à travers une plaque frontale (13) du mécanisme de verrouillage (10) et pénètre dans la gâchette à levier (15). On peut ainsi ramener une poignée qui s'affaisse à sa position de repos horizontale ou lui donner une autre position à volonté.
