The lock is of the usual well-known construction and the lock casing 33, which is secured to the plate or bracket |'I, carries the tumblers 34 which are actuated upon insertion of the ke 35 to release the usual revolving plug which carries the hub 23 on a square shaft thereby providing for rotation of the hub 23 with the revolving plug upon turning of the key 35 within the lock. To positively stop rotation of the hub 23 and its associated parts in locked position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a laterally projecting stop pin 31 adapted to coact with a depending portion of the plate I! may be pro vided: and reverse rotation of the hub 23 may be positively stopped by proper placement of the supporting column I5 so as to coact with one edge of the plate l9 upon opening swinging movement thereof through its toggle and link connections with the hub 23, as will be hereinafter more clearly described, to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
To provide for proper adjustment of the 010- sure actuating mechanism, the toggle member 24 may be provided with screw threads extendin to the opposite ends thereof and coacting with the internally threaded pivot sockets 38 which may be clamped in adjusted position on the member 24 by means of lock nuts 39, and the link 7 .2! may likewise be provided with screw threads adapted to coact with the associated internally threaded pivot Sockets 4!! which may be clamped in adjusted position in like fashion by means of lock nuts 4!. Adjustments in the length of either the member 24 or the link 2'! may he readily eifected in an obvious manner b first detaching either end of th member 24 or link 27 from its associated element 2|, 25, or I9 as the case may be, thereafter backing the lock nut 39 or M away from its adjacent socket 353 or 49, next screwing the socket 38 or 48 on the threaded member 24 or link 21 in the desired direction. and finally returning the lock nut to locking position adjacent the adjusted socket and efiectin attachment of the member 24 or link 2! to the element 2|, 25, or 53 from which it was detached.
The closure I2 maybe readily unlocked and sv "ung from closed and locked position shown in Figs. and. 2 to open position shown in Fi s 3 and 4 by merely inserting the key 35 within the look I and rotating the same clockwise. Insertion of the key 35 within the lock l5 moves the tumblers 34 so as to permit rotation of the usual revolvable plug within the lock casing and clockwise movement of the key rotates this plug and the square shaft 38 and the hub 23 carried thereby. Since the latch hook 3 and to gl lever 2| are both rigidl secured to or formed integral with the hub zaciockwise rQ a Q of the hub 23 causes the latch 3| to swing out of engagement with the projection 29 to unlock the closure and causes the toggle lever 2| to simultaneously swing downwardly moving the lever 2| and its connection 24 across the toggle axis, thereby swinging the bracket IS on its bearing 25!, through the connecting toggle member 24, motion transfer lever 25, and link 21, toward the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. As the bracket i9 is thus actuated, the closure I 2 carried thereby is arcuately swung to open position, movement of the entire mechanism being positively stopped with the closure I2 in open position upon contact of the bracket I9 with the column I5.
To effect closing and locking of the closure or door i2, it is merely necessary to rotate the key counterclockwise and thereafter withdraw the same from the lock I6. Upon such counterclockwise movement of the ke 35, the toggle lever 2| is swung upwardly toward the base plate M, the lever 2| and its connection 24 being moved across the toggle axis, thereby causing the closure carrying bracket |9, by reason of the connecting elements 24, 25, and 21, to swing toward the lock it and the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Simultaneously, the latch 3| is swung upwardly and into hooked engagement with the projection 29, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, after the projection 29 reaches the stop 30. When the mechanism is in such door closed position, the stop pin 31 on the hub 23 is in positive contact with the depending edge of the bracket I7, and upon withdrawal of the key 35, final locking is eifected.
Should the key 35 break while in the lock IE, it would normally not be possible to effect actuation and latching 0f the closure I2 until after repairs have been made. However, I have provided means whereby the closure may still be opened and closed, as well as latched and un latched, as long as the lock tumblers 34 are in such position as will permit rotation of the hub 23 and square shaft 35. As hereinabove set forth, I provide the latch 3| with a headed pin 32 extending outwardl therefrom; and I additionally provide a through opening or aperture screwthreaded to receive a closure screw 42 in the casing wall in adjacent the lock l8 and in the vicinity of the latch 3|, and a slightly hooked elongated bar 43 which may be readily utilized to release and latch the mechanism in such emergencies before repair of the lock may be effected.
If the key 35 is broken off in the lock IS with the tumblers in such position as will permit rotation of the usual revolvable plug, square shaft 36 and hub 23 and it is desired to latch or unlatch the closure I2 and to actuate the same, the screw 42 may be readily removed from the aperture in the casing wall, and the hooked end of the bar 43 may then be inserted through this aperture and into engagement with the headed pin 32 carried by the latch 3|. With the bar 43 serving as a lever fulcrumed in the casing I9, the latch 3| may then be swung into or out of engagement with the projection 29 to effect latching or unlatching of the mechanism in an obvious manner, thereby preventing or permitting opening of the closure l2 as the case may be, and this procedure may be repeated as often as necessary until repairs have been made to the lock I6.
From the foregoing detailed description, it will be apparent that my present invention provides a simple, durable, and compact locking and actuating mechanism for closures, all parts of which a may be readily manufactured and quickly assembled at low cost. The improved mechanism has proven highly efficient and practical in actual use as applied to church tabernacles, and may obviously be readily utilized in other instances as applied to doors and closures. Employment of the toggle lever 21 and its associated parts, including the link 24, lever 25, link 21 and bracket 19, eliminates the need of employing expensive toothed gearing, and furthermore provides an inexpensive mechanism wherein movement of the closure by prying or the like is positively prevented. The closure actuating mechanism is especially applicable and particularly advantageous for use in localities where noise is objectionable since it is silent in operation, and positive opening or closing of the closure 12 is permitted and effected by one simple operation. The parts may be readily adjusted in a simple manner to insure proper opening and closing, and all parts of the mechanism are easily accessible for adjustment, replacement and/r repair. An extremely valuable and important feature of the invention is the provision of means, including the headed pin 32, aperture adapted to be closed by the screw 42, and the latching and release bar 43, which permit ready actuation of the latch and actuating mechanism in emergencies during such times as the key may be broken ch in the lock.
It should be understood that it is not desired or intended to limit this invention to the exact details of construction or to the precise mode of use, herein shown and described, for various modifications within the scope of the appended claims may occur to persons skilled in the art to which this invention pertains.
I claim:
1. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure swingable about a pivotal axis relative to said support, a lock fixedly mounted relative to said support and having a laterally projecting arm swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, stop means associated with said support for limiting the movement of said arm, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm and the other end associated with said closure remote from its pivotal axis to transmit motion from said arm to said closure, and means for swinging said arm and said link to a position wherein the swinging motion thereof is arrested by said stop means to positively prevent opening of said closure by externally applied pressure when the lock key is removed.
2. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure swingable about a pivotal axis relative to said support, a lock fixedly mounted relative to said support and having an arm swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm, another link having an end connected to said closure remote from its pivotal axis, and a motion transfer lever having its medial portion pivotally mounted with respect to said support and having opposite swinging ends connected to the other ends of said links.
3. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure swingable about a pivotal axis relative to said support, a lock fixedly mounted relative to said support and having an arm swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm, another link having an end connected to said closure remote from its pivotal axis, and a motion transfer lever having its medial portion pivotally mounted with respect to said support and having opposite swinging ends connected to the other ends of said links, said arm and said first-mentioned link being swingable to a position wherein the swinging motion thereof is arrested to positively prevent opening of said closure by externally applied pressure when the lock key is removed.
4. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure, a support for said closure swingable about a pivotal axis relative to said fixed support, a lock fixedly mounted relative to said fixed support and having an arm swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm, another link having an end connected to said closure support remote from its pivotal axis, and a motion transfer lever having its medial portion pivotally mounted with respect to said fixed support and having opposite swinging ends connected to the other ends of said link 5. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure, a support for said closure pivotally suspended from said fixed support for swinging movement relative thereto, a lock secured to said fixed support and having an arm at its inner end swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm, another link having an end connected to said closure support remote from its pivotal axis, and a motion transfer lever having its medial portion pivotally mounted on said fixed support and having opposite swinging ends connected to the other ends of said links.
6. A closure lock and actuating mechanism comprising, a fixed support, a closure swingable about a pivotal axis relative to said support, a lock fixedly mounted relative to said support and having an arm swingable about the axis of rotation of the lock key, a link having one end connected to the swinging end of said arm, another link having an end connected to said closure remote from its pivotal axis, and a motion transfer lever having its medial portion pivotally mounted with respect to said support and having opposite swinging ends connected to the other ends of said links, said links being adjustable in length to facilitate proper positioning of said closure.
