Definitions
- This invention concerns a mobile lifting device having a wheeled stand and, projecting upwardly therefrom, an upright which includes two spaced-apart U-sections and along which a patient carrier is movable so as to be vertically adjustable in relation to the upright by means of a driving means mounted on the upright and including a screw mechanism, preferably a ball screw, mounted in a space between the U-sections.
- the device according to the invention is primarily, albeit not exclusively, intended to be used for transferring patients to such tables as are used in hospital X-ray departments and on which the patient is to lie when X-rayed.
- X-ray tables are much higher than e.g. a conventional bed or chair. Patients who are able to move freely therefore have to get up on a stool with one or more steps and then raise themselves up onto the table.
- a disabled person, especially one who is overweight is to be X-rayed, such transfer becomes much more difficult. Since the patient is unable to get up on the table by himself, two assistants are usually required to manually lift the patient at least to a sitting position on the table.
- DE 2,749,306 discloses such a mobile lifting device, which includes a U-shaped stand mounted on four wheels and connected to two spacedapart tubes which, at the top, are interconnected to form an upright projecting from the stand.
- the two upright tubes are connected to a carrier in the form of a platform connected to a tubular framework which at the top has two arms which project in the area above the platform and to which can be attached a harness serving to carry the patient in a squat in which the seat rests on the harness, the feet are in contact with the platform, and the knees rest against a cushion or the like on the tubular framework.
- tubular framework is connected to the upright tubes by a number of sliding sleeves which can move along the upright tubes then serving as guides.
- the thus-composed platform is raised and lowered by means of a return sheave mechanism including a cranked roller on which is wound a rope running over guide pulleys on both the top of the upright tubes and the tubular framework of the platform.
- this prior-art lifting device is capable of lifting and lowering a disabled patient, it nevertheless suffers from several drawbacks, e.g. with regard to the transfer of a patient to a high supporting structure.
- a serious drawback of this prior-art device are the many movable parts which are exposed outwardly, such as the sliding sleeves on the guide tubes, as well as the guide pulleys and the associated rope to the lifting mechanism.
- the assistants When the patient is to be lifted, the assistants must stand immediately adjacent to the lifting device, e.g. for supporting the patient. This involves an obvious risk that the assistants' clothes, as well as those of the patient, may come into contact with and get tangled up in the exposed movable parts, which may cause physical injuries as well as operational interruptions.
- the prior-art device is further impaired by the need of placing the patient in a squat, which may be a rather difficult operation if the patient is weak.
- the present invention aims at eliminating the drawbacks of the prior-art lifting device by providing a lift ing device of improved design.
- the basic object of the invention thus is to provide a mobile lifting device having a minimum of outwardly exposed and movable parts in which clothes or parts of the body can get tangled up.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a lifting device which can lift and lower a standing patient.
- Yet another object of the invention is to provide a lifting device of simple construction, which is inexpensive to make.
- a further object of the invention is to provide a lifting device which requires a minimum of force to raise and lower the carrier employed.
- the invention aims at providing a lifting device whose carrier may, in simple and expedient manner, be replaced with another carrier forming part of a series of different carriers.
- US 4,704,749 discloses a mobile patient-lifting device with an upright which is made up of two spacedapart U-sections between which is mounted a screw mechanism for raising and lowering a carrier.
- the flanges of the U-sections are facing one another, whereby gaps are exposed through which extend parts of the carrier. For example, clothes may accidentally get into these gaps and become tangled up with e.g. the screw.
- this device has no spring which may contribute to and facilitate the raising of the carrier.
- FIG. 1 is a partly sectional perspective view of the
- FIG. 2 is a simplified front view of the device whose carrier has been removed
- FIG. 3 is a horizontal and enlarged cross-section taken along the line III-III in Fig. 2, and
- FIG. 4 is a detail view taken along the line VI-VI in
- Fig. 1 illustrates a stand 1, an upright 2 projecting upwardly from the stand, and a vertically adjustable patient carrier 3 associated with the upright.
- the stand 1 includes two side members 4, 4' which are interconnected by an intermediate member 5 supporting the upright 2.
- the stand 1 is mounted on four wheels 6 of which two wheels, viz. the two rear wheels, are advantageously equipped with brake means 7 which can be operated by the attendant's foot.
- a U-shaped member 8, also connected to the stand 1, includes two vertical tubes or tubular portions 9, 9' and, serving to interconnect these tubes, a tube or tubular portion 10 connected to the top of the upright 2.
- the carrier 3 includes a platform which is intended to receive the patient in standing position and which, apart from the platform or standing plate 11 proper, includes a rear piece 12 projecting upwardly from a rear edge thereof.
- the rear piece may be 80-100 cm high.
- At the side edges of the plate 11 can be arranged side walls 13, 13' of much lesser height.
- Two U-shaped supporting means 14, 14' are also connected to the plate 11 and the rear piece 12 and consist of bent tubes or sections with upper supporting members 15 which may support the armpits of the patient or alternatively support the hands.
- the upper portion 16 of the rear piece 12 is, as appears from Fig. 4, rearwardly bent so that a hook is formed on the back of the rear piece.
- the upright 2 includes two spaced-apart U-sections 17, 17' which open in diametrically opposed directions (see Fig. 3) and are arranged within a casing 18 which has an essentially U-shaped cross-section and which, at least partially, opens towards the carrier platform 3.
- a slide- type or carriage-type frame 19, which is made up of two vertically spaced-apart cross pieces 20, 21 and two side pieces 22, 22', is movable along the U-sections 17, 17'.
- On the side pieces are mounted two pairs of bearing- equipped wheels or rollers 23 running in the U-sections 17, 17'.
- the U-shaped casing 18 has a rear wall 24 and two side walls 25, 25' which may end in inwardly bent flange portions.
- the screw mechanism essentially consists of an outer cylinder tube 27 which contains a telescopic inner tube 28 which in turn has a threaded rod (which projects out of the outer tube 27 at 29), balls arranged between the inner tube and the threadings of the screw rod serving to move, when the rod rotates, the inner tube 28 axially in relation to the outer tube 27.
- a crank mechanism including a manually rotatable wheel 30 which is mounted on a shaft which is non-rotatably connected to a gear wheel 31 which, via a cogged belt 32, communicates with a second gear wheel 33 of smaller diameter than the wheel 31.
- the smaller gear wheel 33 is, via a shaft extending through the wall 24, connected to the screw rod 29 via an angle drive which is made up of two helical gear wheels 34, 35. Since the gear wheels 31 and 33 have different diameters, there is formed a gear transmission means with a suitable transmission ratio, e.g. 1:4, so that the screw rod 29 will be driven at a much higher speed than the manually operated crank wheel 30.
- a gas spring 36 cooperates with the ball screw 26 and is, like the ball screw, contained in the space between the two U-sections 17, 17'.
- the cylinder member 37 of the gas spring 36 is articulated to the top 21 of the frame, and the free end of the piston rod 38 is articulated to the intermediate piece 5 of the stand 1.
- Fig. 2 shows the frame 19 in an upper end position, in which the ball scre 26 is of minimum length and the piston rod 38 of the gas spring 36 projects maximally from the associated cylinder member. From this position, the frame can be lowered to a lower end position, in which the platform 11 is applied against the floor or supporting structure, by the crank 3 being manually operated at the same time as the weight of the patient standing on the platform exerts a downwardly- directed load on the frame.
- the gas in the gas spring 36 is then compressed, so that the spring is maximally compressed in the lower end position of the frame.
- the gas spring greatly facilitates the lifting movement so that the assistant is able to lift also very heavy patients by applying fairly moderate forces to the crank.
- the relationship between lifting and lowering forces can be essentially balanced so that very little force has to be applied to the crank.
- a gas spring of the type whose load is chiefly constant regard less of the position of the piston rod in relation to the cylinder member.
- a suitable mechanical spring As mentioned earlier, the rear piece 11 of the platform is, at its upper edge, formed with a hook-shaped por tion 16 which can be hooked onto the upper cross piece 21 of the frame 19 to carry the platform or the carrier in its entirety.
- the carrier may, in rapid and expedient manner, be removed from the movable frame 19 and replaced with another suitable carrier forming part of a series of different carriers.
- the upper part of the U-shaped casing 18 can be covered with a metal sheet or plate
- the lifting device according to the invention is also advantageous in that the carrier platform can be raised and lowered with a minimum of force. Furthermore, the patient can be moved from e.g. a transport vehicle to the carrier platform in a simple and expedient manner, since it is possible for the patient to stand on the platform. Due to the fact that the patient can support himself steadily on the supporting means 14, the standing position involves no difficulties during the lifting and lowering operations.
- the lifting device described above and shown in the drawings may be modified in many ways without departing from the idea of the invention.
- the manually operated crank mechanism with an electric motor which completely removes the need of manual operations during the lifting movement.
- Such an electric motor may optionally be remote-controlled, so that the assistant is free to support and help the patient when moved from the floor to the X-ray table.
