Definitions

  • the invention relates to a cover particularly of the kind used to protect an object from incident light or heat energy.
  • the reflective material makes the covered object very noticeable in its surroundings because the reflective material reflects light to an observer and may also reflect infra-red rays to infra-red sensors which may be trained on the covered object.
  • a cover for shielding an object from incident heat and light energy comprising a first reflective sheet of material and a second non-reflective sheet of material which is laminated with the first sheet and which conceals said first sheet in use.
  • the cover may include a layer of insulating material.
  • the layer of insulating material may comprise felt or another suitable heat insulating element.
  • Materials suitable for the non reflective sheet include cloth such as canvas and polyvi ⁇ yl chloride.
  • the material for the second sheet should preferably be chosen so that it does not absorb to any significant degree the radiation which is to be reflected by the reflecting layer.
  • the non reflective sheet may be arranged to have the same appearance as the surroundings so that the covered object will not be noticeable and it may also be arranged to provide the protective material with greater strength than is provided by the reflecting layer.
  • the reflective material may comprise a sheet of aluniniun foil, aluninised foil or material the weave of which has been aluninised as by painting or vapour deposition or by any other suitable means.
  • the reflective elements of the laminate may be secured together by stitching or by any other suitable method or means.
  • respective elements may be secured together to provide a quilt or quilted effect.
  • This provides a cover in which the respective elements are secured together so that they are held in a controlled array which does not disintegrate when cut.
  • the quilted effect provides a surface which, when draped over an object, is "non-slip" in that the quilted areas provide a foot or hand hold.
  • the quilted area provides a controllable thickness of the cover.
  • the cover is preferably formed with lineal regions along which the elements are secured together so that the cover can be cut along those lineal regions without exposing the interior of the cover or causing loss of filling material.
  • the lineal regions may be of suitable width for the insertion of eyelets to assist securing of the cover over an object to be protected.
  • the eyelets may be provided with the cover or the user may insert them when he has decided which lineal region will form the boundary of the cover to be cut out from the larger size laminate.
  • the lineal regions may be provided on a grid of 250mm interval.
  • the cover may be flexible and foldable and may accordingly be relatively thin, say about 5mm in thickness.

  • a temperature drop of 30°C - 50°C can be obtained in or on an article covered by a shield embodying the invention.
  • the cover can be placed over sensitive articles such as a canopy of an aircraft without scratching same.
  • Additional layers may be provided, for example to provide fire proofing and/or waterproofing.
  • Non-reflecting layers may be provided on both sides of the material rather than just one in order to give additional strength or to control the appearance of the material from both sides.
  • Articles embodying the invention also have an additional advantage in that, particularly at night, infra-red radiation emitted from say an engine is retained within the confines of the cover and is therefore effectively hidden from detection in infra-red seekers.
