Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a line reel particularly for use in fly fishing, comprising a body portion, a line holder rotatable around a reel axle, a brake means, a spring means acting between an abutment member included in said body portion and brake means, as well as a tripper and adjustment device which is in cooperation with brake means and adapted to be mounted at a distance from reel body portion on the shaft of a fishing rod and which includes a transmission means, adapted to transmit a force decelerating the rotating motion of the line holder from tripper and adjustment device to brake means, said brake means being adapted to have a slowing effect on the rotating motion of line holder and/or to prevent the rotation of line holder during the application of force to transmission means included in tripper and adjustment device and to operate said spring means for automatically cutting off the communicating action as the application of force is stopped.

If the lure has caught a large fish, for example a salmon, such fish will swim at a speed of up to 100 km/h either upstream or downstream. Thus, the fisherman must start the boat motor to run after a salmon. It is obvious that, for example in this type of situation, the adjustment of a screw brake to comply with the advancing speed of a fish is extremely difficult, which often results in breaking or tangling of the line.
  • Running of the line can also be decelerated manually by pressing the line e.g. against the handle of a rod. However, in case of a hard drag, the line may slit a bad cut in a bare hand. A braking effect can also be provided by pressing the rotating line holder gently e.g. with the thumb. However, this action ties up the free hand.

  • the brake In most fly reels, the brake, is always in action and the meaning of this is that, upon a sudden jerk by a fish or upon pulling the line otherwise out of a reel, the line does not become entangled. Since the brake provides a drag also when wearing out a fish, said brake is adapted to be adjustable in some fly reels. However, the adjustment cannot generally be effected in a stepless fashion and since the adjustment lever is mounted on the end plate of a reel, the adjustment thereof is just as tedious as that of a screw brake.
