Abstract

A remote controlled interface adapter for providing of a temperature off set adjustment, respectively for activation of the operation safeguarding circuit (SI), of a fan control circuit comprises an emitter follower coupled control transistor (T1) which controls a between the fan (V) and a DC voltage supply (+) coupled regulating series transistor (T2) being operated from a signal lead (1B+) connected to a temperature detecting means (RT) and provides regulation of the rotational speed of the fan to be kept suitably proportional with the temperature at a temperature detecting means (RT). The safeguarding circuit (SI) is coupled to a lead (Y) connecting the series transistor (T2) and the fan (V) and serves to safeguard current supply to the fan (V) to keep at least a minimum rotational speed of the fan (V). Temperature range off set adjustment or regulating off set adjustment of the control to attain adaptability to varying fan cooling demands, in particular at smaller computer systems, is remote controlled achieved by interfacing the remote control to the control through a circuit-insulating or -dividing element, such as an opto coupler (OTK), having one output terminal in common with the voltage supply to the temperature detecting means (RT) circuit connected to a first comparator (1A) entrance (1A+) influencing on the control transistor (T1) and having the second entrance (1A-) connected to the connecting lead (Y). The other output terminal of the element (OTK) influences upon the temperature detecting means (RT) signal lead (1B+).

Description

REMOTE CONTROLLED INTERFACE ADAPTER FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL COMPRISING SAFESUARDING CIRCUIT.
The present invention relates to a remote controlled inter-face adapter for providing of a temperature off set adjustment, respectively for activation of a safeguarding circuit, of a fan control circuit which includes a safeguarding circuit for its operation, whereby the circuit is of the type which includes a regulating transistor which is connected in series with the fan and regulates the rotational speed of the fan by controlling a DC current arriving from a DC voltage supply, and whereby the control in particular is of the type comprising means so that the series transistor receives its base voltage from an as emitter follower coupled transistor having its base provided with a control voltage which is determined by a temperature detecting means and is proportional, suitably, with the temperature within a temperature range and exhibits such direction of variation that an increasing temperature results in an increasing current through the transistor coupled as emitter follower and therethrough in an also increasing current through the fan, and whereby the circuit, which provides the said voltage to the base of the as emitter follower coupled transistor as being determined by the temperature detecting means and as being suitably proportional with this temperature, comprises means for limiting the regulation range, so that at least a minimum of rotational speed of the fan is achieved, and whereby, a second series transistor is coupled in parallel with the emitter-collector path of the first series tran- sistor, this second transistor being couDled with its base to receive a control voltage for the attaining of conducting condition whenever the fan during its operation from the series transistor receives a voltage which is smaller than the voltage which provides the minimum speed of rota tion of the fan, and whereby the means which limits the regulation range to provide at least a minimum of rotatio- speed of the fan comprises a comparator having an output being through an adapting means connected to the base of the as emitter follower coupled transistor and having a first entrance coupled to the voltage supply of the circuit of the temperature detecting means and having a second entrance coupled to the connecting lead between the fan and the series transistor, and whereby the direction of variation of the comparator output voltage is such that by a missing connection of a temperature detecting device and simultaneously occurring of a decreasing of the rotational speed of the fan an increasing of the base voltage is resulting in an increasing of the conductance of the as emitter follower coupled transistor.
A circuit of the above mentioned type is described through Danish patent application No. 4486/SS being filed by the applicant. The herefrom known type of circuit of prior art is applicable together with one or possibly more temperature detecting means, namely in that more such temperature detecting means then within the circuit, or the signals issuing from them, are coupled in parallel with each other. On the other hand, if, by way of example, within a smaller computer system a line printer has to be installed, and this printing device also requires fan- cooling, it may be advantageous if, with respect to control, the temperatur range becomes off set, and furthermore, that a failure to this off set or also to the line printer, taken as a whole, results in activating of the above mentioned safeguarding circuit.
This purpose is according to the invention attained in that the remote controlled interface adapter comprises a circuit-insulating and/or -dividing element, such as an opto coupler, of which one output terminal is connected to the entrance of the comparator being coupled to the vol tage supply of the temperature detecting means. and in that the other output terminal of the element is connected to a location within the circuit of the temperature detecting means where an increasing temperature influencing upon the temperature detecting means results in an increasing of the conductance of the as emitter follower coupled transistor.
In this respect a rather simple embodiment of the invention may be attained in that the other output terminal of the circuit-insulating and/or -dividing element is connected to the temperature detecting means signal lead connected to the fan regulating circuit.
Embodiments according to the invention are described in more details in the following under reference to the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 schematically illustrates the substantial features of an embodiment according to the present invention, and
Fig. 2 in more details illustrates the embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawing elements performing the same or corresponding functions carry the same signs of references.
Enclosed is attached a copy of the specification and of the drawing of the above mentioned Danish patent application No. 4486/88 which at the date of the filing of the Danish priority patent application preceding this present application had been filed at the Danish Patent Office.
To this embodiment of prior art is connected a circuit-insulating and/or -dividing element in the shape of an opto coupler OTK having its output phototransistor as shown connected to the connecting lead between the entrance of a comparator 1A and the entrance of an operational amplifier IB. To the entrance of the opto coupler a voltage may be connected. The conductance of the output phototransistor is varying at least somewhat proportional to the value of the voltage being connected to the entrance of the opto coupler. At a certain upper value of the entrance voltage a further increasing hereof is not going to result in a further increasing conductance of the output phototransistor. When this condition exists, in practice the resistor RB substantially may be regarded as short-circuited, under all circumstances it may be regarded in the way that the ohm-values, which present the elements in the temperature detecting means, have to be not too small to avoid unwanted heat-conditions in the circuit- It thus will correspond to the simulating of high temperature conditions for the temperature detecting means when the output photo transistor attains a strongly conducting condition. Thereby, the voltage at the point of connection Y by suitable choice of component values is lowered unto the mentioned minimum voltage which results in the minimum rotational speed of the fan V. Herethrough, the safeguarding circuit SI becomes activated, and the fan is brought to operate at a suitable high rotational speed.
If a lower entrance voltage to OTK is chosen a change of the temperature detecting means circuit is achieved corresponding to the introducing of an off set of the temperature range and to the introducing of a change in the sensitivity of the temperature detecting means RT.
