Definitions
- the present invention relates to a rifle mechanism which includes a rifle bolt which is displaceably and rotatably mounted in a bolt housing and the front of which bolt is provided with locking shoulders which are intended for coaction with corresponding locking shoulders in the bolt housing, such as to lock the rifle bolt in a firing position.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a construction in which the bolt is centered very effec ⁇ tively and stably in the bolt housing when the bolt is in its locked, firing position, while still enabling the bolt to be moved smoothly and readily.
- the rear guide means advantageously comprises a cylindrical guide surface arranged close to the bolt handle and coacting with guide shoulders which extend radially inwards from the bolt housing.
- the forward guide means comprises a cartridge inserted into the cartridge position of the weapon and an impact bottom recess in the bolt intended for coaction with the rear end of the cartridge.
- the forward guide means and the rear guide means will be spaced a long distance apart, highly effective centering of the bolt as a whole is achieved, and because the guide means are only in guiding engagement over a short part of the path tra- veiled the bolt, the bolt can be moved smoothly and readily.
- Manipulation of the bolt is further improved by provi ⁇ ding the bolt with a slide sleeve which is non- rotatably guided in the bolt housing and and which is so adapted to the internal configuration of the bolt housing and to the configuration of the bolt as to enable the guide means to be brought smoothly into guiding engagement with one another.
- Figure 1 is a side view of an inventive rifle mecha- nism.
- Figure 2 is a front view of the rifle mechanism shown in Figure 1 in a non-locked state.
- Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of an inventive rifle mechanism in a locked state
- Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line IV-IV in Figures 1 and 3
- Figure 5 is a perspective view J a slide sleeve in ⁇ tended for the bolt.
- a rifle bolt 2 is displaceably and rotatably mounted in a bolt housing 3, which has a spent-cartridge ejector opening 4 provided on one side thereof.
- a handle 5 mounted on the rear of the bolt 2 is a handle 5 and the forward end of the bolt is provided with radially and outwardly projecting locking shoulders 6 which are intended to coact with corresponding locking shoulders 7 provided in the bolt housing 3, so as to lock the bolt 2 in its firing position, subsequent to having rotated the bolt about its long axis.
- the bolt 2 is in its non-locked state, when the handle 5 is turned upwards in accordance with Figure 2.
- the locking shoulders 6 are able to move along respective guide grooves 8 extending in the longitudinal extension of the bolt housing 3 (see Figure 4) , so as to enable the bolt to be moved non- rotatably backwards and forwards, in order to load the rifle for instance.
- the handle 5 can be turned from its non-locked position shown in Figure 2 to its locked position shown in Figures 1 and 3 (ind ⁇ icated by the handle 5 shown in chain lines in Figure 2). Locking engagement of the shoulders is facilitated by bevels or chamfers on the locking shoulders 7 of the bolt housing, in a conventional manner such that the locking shoulders 6 on the bolt will move to their bolt locking positions while in sliding contact with the bevelled surfaces.
- a cartridge 9 is fed into the chamber of the barrel 10 of the weapon, said barrel being screwed to the bolt housing.
- the rear end of the cartridge 9 will therewith be located in an impact bottom recess 11 provided on the forward end of the bolt, such that the impact bottom 12 on the bolt is in contact with the end surface of the cartridge, see Figure 3.
- the recess 11 has a diameter a which is greater than the diameter b_ of the cartridge base.
- the opening intended for the forward end 13 of the bolt 2 between the locking shoul ⁇ ders 7 on the bolt housing has a diameter c_ which is greater than the diameter d on the forward end 13 of the bolt. This provides a forward guide means 14 lo ⁇ cated on the forward end 13 of the bolt and functioning to center the bolt 2 in the bolt housing 3.
- the radial play or clearance x between the recess 11 and the end of the cartridge 9, i.e. the difference between the diameters a and b, is much smaller than the radial play or clearance y between the locking shoul ⁇ ders 7 and the forward end 13 of the bolt, i.e. the difference between the diameters c and d_.
- suitable values for the clearance x have been found to be about 0.03-0.05 mm and for the clearance y. about 0.20-0.30 mm. Accordingly, when the bolt is in its firing position, only the rear ends of the locking shoulders 6 will be in contact with the locking shoul ⁇ ders 7 in the bolt housing. There is no contact, how ⁇ ever, between the forward end 13 of the bolt and the locking shoulders 7.
- centering of the bolt in its locked position in the bait housing may be achieved instead by making the clearance x greater than the clearance , i.e. by making the clearance between the recess 11 and the end of the cartridge 9 greater than the clearance between the locking shoulders 7 and the forward end 13 of the bolt.
- This variant increases the risk of making movement of the bolt difficult.
- Centering of the bolt 2 in its locked position in the bolt housing 3 is also achieved with the aid of a rear guide means 15, located on the rear part of the bolt adjacent the handle 5, i.e. rearwardly of the ejector opening 4. Similar to the forward guide means 14, the rear guide means 15 is intended to be brought into guiding engagement only in the final phase of forward movement of the bolt to its locked firing position.
- the bolt 2 can be centered in the bolt housing 3 with only a very slight angular error.
- the rear guide means 15 includes a cylindrical guide surface 16 on the bolt 2 and guide shoulders 17 which project radially inwards from the inside of the bolt housing 3. As illustrated in Figure 3, the guide sur ⁇ face 16 and the guide shoulders 17 are located opposite one another in the locked position of the bolt. Both the guide surface 16 and the guide shoulders 17 have a relatively short extension in the longitudinal exten ⁇ sion of the bolt housing 3, suitably an extension of about 5 mm, i.e. the guide surface and guide shoulders first come into guiding engagement with one another during the absolute last part of the forward movement of the bolt.
- the guide surface 16 has a diameter e (see Figure 4) which is preferably somewhat larger than the diameter of the forwardly located part of the bolt, so that the bolt can be readily moved rearwards without .
- the guide surface 16 is preferably provided with a sharp leading edge 18 operative to scrape away any dirt that may be present in front of the bolt.
- the diameter f of the opening between the guide shoulders 17 is preferably only slightly larger than the diameter e of the guide surface 16.
- the clearance or play z. between these two diameters is suitably about 0.03-0.05 mm, i.e. of the same size as the play or clearance x between the recess 11 and the rear end of the cartridge 9 in the afore- described preferred embodiment of the front guide means 14.
- the bolt 2 carries in front of the guide surface 16 a slide sleeve 19, the configuration of which is shown more clearly in Figure 5.
- a slide sleeve 19 Mounted on the outer surface of the sleeve 19 are three longitudinally extendi. guide ribs 20, each of which fits into a respective guide groove 18 in the bolt housing 3.
- the slide sleeve 19 can be resiliently fitted onto the bolt 2, with the aid of the slot 21, and functions to enable the bolt to move smoothly in the bolt housing 3.
- the sleeve 19 is there ⁇ fore preferably made of a material which will generate only a small degree of friction against the bolt hous ⁇ ing, such as an acetal plastic for instance.
- the outer diameter & of the sleeve 19 should be slightly smaller than the diameter e of the guide surface 16.
- the length of the sleeve 19 is . such that when the bolt 2 is in its locked position the rear end of the sleeve will be located adjacent the guide surface 16 and the front end of the sleeve will be located immediately behind the locking shoulders 7, which in turn are located slightly in front of the ejector opening 4.
- the sleeve 19 herewith also forms a seal for the bolt 2 and prevents the ingress of dirt, while the greater length of the sleeve reduces the risk
- that part of the bolt 2 which carries the sleeve 19 is shown to be cylindrical, although, of course, other shapes are conceivable.
- the slide sleeve is rigid it may be necessary, for instance, to partially bevel the bolt in order to enable the bolt and the sleeve to be fitted together.
