Abstract

The apparatus has, in combination, an air treatment unit (3) of the mechanical-electrostatic type mounted on a passenger transportation vehicle (1). The air treatment unit (3) treats the air during normal transit and during the transit stops. The air treatment unit (3) is conveniently subjected to periodic cleaning by shaking and/or washing in appropriate fixed stations.

Description

MOBILE APPARATUS FOR CLEANING ENVIRONMENTAL AIR Technical Field
The present invention relates to a mobile apparatus for cleaning environmental air, and in particular the air of residential areas. Background Art
It is known that the air of residential areas, especially in the winter periods and in low altitude regions, is heavily polluted by the exhausts of passenger vehicles and heating systems.
The polluting agents are composed of suspended dust and liquids which are notoriously toxic and cause damage to the human body, in particular with disorders of the respiratory tract.
Simple means for solving the problem are not known; the problem is simply coped with by limiting the circulation of passenger vehicles within residential areas. However, in this manner one merely obtains a reduction in the pollution level, which in any case remains high and dangerous due to the exhausts from heating systems, which cannot be eliminated. Disclosure of the invention
The aim of the present invention is to provide an apparatus which can treat and clean the environmental air, and in particular the air of residential areas.
A further important object of the present invention is to treat the air particularly in low altitude regions, in which the pollution levels are higher and therefore more hazardous.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus which has modest costs and is easy to operate.
This aim, these objects and others which will become apparent hereinafter are achieved by a mobile apparatus for cleaning environmental air which comprises, in combination, mechanical-electrostatic air treatment units with passenger transportation vehicles of which said units exploit the motion through the environment to be treated and from which they draw the energy required for operation, filter cleaning means being furthermore provided and cooperating with fixed stations for washing and periodic regeneration.
Brief description of the drawings
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description of the apparatus, given merely by way of non-limitative example and schematically illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: figure 1 is a perspective view of a passenger transportation vehicle provided with an air treatment unit according to the invention; figure 2 is a schematic view of the type of air treatment unit which is used in the present invention.
Ways of carrying out the invention With reference to the above figures , figure 1 illustrates a public transportation vehicle, for example a bus indicated by 1, on the roof 2 whereof an air treatment unit 3 is fixed; said unit 3 intakes polluted air, indicated by the arrows 5, from an opening 4 which is arranged frontally according to the direction of motion, and expels it from a rear opening 6 after said air has undergone a filtration treatment. The air treatment unit as illustrated in figure 2 is composed of a mechanical prefilter 7 provided with filtrating masses of preset porosity which retain the larger particles carried by the air. Said prefilter is followed by a grid of adjustable- voltage ionization wires 8 which precede a pack of positive and negative collector plates 9 made of ridged metal plate having a large surface, for collecting the ionized particles contained in the environmental air. The inflowing air, indicated by 10, is drawn by an electric fan 11 with variable flow-rate which is adjusted by an automatic system as a function of the speed of motion of the vehicle, to thereby maintain the air-flow speed inside the filter within a range of optimum values. The electric current required for the power supply of the air treatment unit is drawn from the electric power system of the vehicle on which the unit is installed.
The mechanical prefilter and the electrostatic one are subjected to periodic cleaning by shaking and/or washing, which can be performed by introducing a suitable detergent mixture through connections with quick-couplings 12 connected to an internal circuit provided with a plurality of conveniently arranged and orientated nozzles.
The waste water is collected in appropriate containers for subsequent conditioning.
The complete replacement of the filtration masses and of any other part which is no longer efficient is also possible, and modular bodies and quick-couplings are provided in order to reduce the down time of the carrier vehicle. From what has been described and illustrated, it can be seen that the intended aim and objects have all been achieved and in particular that it is in particular possible to continuously treat the low altitude regions of residential areas through which passenger transportation vehicles transit.
The continuous motion of said vehicles causes the cleaning units to "comb" the environment, treating the air along the transit and stopping regions and recovering a large amount of suspended dust and pollutants indeed in the low altitude region, which is the most heavily polluted and most dangerous one for pedestrians and drivers.
The air treatment units according to the present invention can be installed on the roof of passenger transportation vehicles, in any case achieving operation with modest and convenient costs.
The units and systems have no components with critical and dangerous operation and do not require particularly skilled personnel for their operation. Obviously, all features of the invention may be replaced by technically equivalent elements, without thereby departing from the purview of the present invention. Furthermore any materials , shapes and dimensions may be used according to contingent requirements.
