Abstract

A preparation for purification of hydrophilic liquids including liquids containing radioactive heavy metals. The preparation consists of zeolite in powdered form, preferably in amounts of between 75 and 60 % and most preferably being potassium activated, and of dried and finely ground brown algae, preferably in amounts of between 25 and 40 %.

Description

A preparation of zeolites and brou/n algae for purification of preferably hydrophilic liquids, contaminated u/ith heavy metals that may be radioactive.
The subject invention concerns a preparation for purification of preferably hydrophilic liquids which are contaminated with heavy metals that may be radioactive.
Hitherto, iodine tablets have been held in store to be available to individuals who risk exposure to radioactive fallout in the event of e.g. a nuclear power plant breakdown. Tablets of this kind are speci¬ fically active against radioactive iodine but in practice one has found that these individuals are exposed to a considerably larger number of radioactive substances against which iodine tablets fail to offer satisfactory protection. Substances of this kind include for instance cesium, cadmium, lead, strontium and mercury.
The purpose of the subject invention is to propose a preparation which is suitable for animals as well as for human beings and which offers protection against the uptake of the substances referred to. This purpose is achieved by means of a preparation which is charac¬ terized in that it consists of dried and ground brown algae mixed with zeolite in powdered form. Iodine from brown algae is absorbed by animals and humans and thus prevents all absorption of radioactive iodine.
The alginate and the ordenite absorb cesium, strontium etcetera from the body fluids of animals and humans via the intestinal juice and replace these substances with potassium and other substances. The preparation in accordance with the invention could be in the form of tablets or capsules.
Among the various exsiting forms of zeolit one has found that mordenite which has a high specific ion exchange capacity with regard to cesium is particularly useful. Among the brown algae the algae known as macro algae are pre¬ ferred and one has found that the alginate in these algae possesses extremely good ion exchange properties with regard to for instance strontium, lead, cadmium and mercury.
SUBSTITUTESHEET Preferably, the preparation contains between 25 and 0% of ground al gae and between 75 and 60% of mordenite. The origin of the mordenite may be natural or synthetic . K-saturaed mordenite is the most suitable variety. Finally, it shoul d be mentioned that the best effect is obtained if the preparation is taken within 24 hours after exposure .
The invention is not l imited to the preparation as described but several modifications are possible within the scope of the appended cl aims. Further additions to those al ready mentioned may be made for the purpose of achieving additive effects.
