Description

Writing Implements
This invention relates to improvements in writing implements .
It is a common problem when wishing to make a brief note for the user or carrier of a writing implement such as a ball point pen, for the user to be unable to find a convenient piece of paper to write on. The present invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a writing implement including a first elongate portion containing a writing element, such as a ball point or nib, and a second elongate portion coaxial with the first portion which is adapted to contain a reel of paper or the like, the implement comprising means to enable the paper to be dispensed as required by the user.
In a preferred embodiment the second portion of the implement includes a slot through which the paper is dispensible and severing means to enable a piece of the paper to be removed from the reel. Gripper means may also be provided to prevent the end of the paper drawing back into the portion so that it cannot easily be dispensed. The gripper means may incorporate the severing means in the form of a serrated edge.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 shows a schematic perspective view of one embodimen ,
Figure 2 shows an exploded view of a second embodiment, and
Figure 3 shows an assembled view of Figure 2. The writing implement of Figure 1 has a first elongate cylindrical portion 1 containing a writing element 2, which may be a nib, ball pen, fibre tip or the like, closable by a cap 2a. A second cylindrical portion 3 is hollow and forms a container adapted to receive a reel of paper 4. The second portion 3 may be detachable from the first portion to enable a fresh reel to be inserted in the container. The free end 5 of the reel of paper 4 is arranged to project through a slot 6 in the wall of the second portion 3 and to be placed under a gripper in the form of a bar 7 formed integrally with a top 8 on the end of the second portion. The bar 7 lies close to the exterior surface of the second portion 3 so as to grip the paper to stop it running back into the container. The bar has a serrated edge 9 to enable a portion of the paper to be torn off. A pocket clip 10 over-lies the bar 7 and enables the implement to be held in a pocket in the conventional manner. The pocket clip 10 has a dual function since it can be pressed down onto the bar 7 to securely clamp the paper under the bar to facilitate its removal by tearing off.
Between the two portions there is a link 11 which serves to move the writing element into and out of the main body by a pivotting action and also serves to secure the second portion to the first in a detachable manner. Alternatively, the top 8 may be removable to enable the reel of paper to be replaced from the end of the implement.
The embodiment of figures 2 and 3 is similar to that of Figure 1 accept that access to the interior of the portion 3 to enable the reel of paper to be replaced is obtained by removing the top 8. The top may be screwed onto the cylindrical portion 3 or may be retained in position by a pin 14 engageable in a mating recess in the main body of the pen. In this embodiment, the writing implement is a ball pen consisting of a ball pen part, or refill, 13 which is held in the cylinder part 1 under the tension of a spring 15, the refill 13 being held in position by a cap 10. Extension and retraction of the ball tip is carried our by rotation of the link 11, 11a.
