Description
ADAPTEP FOR A COMPACT DISCHARGE LAMP IN A LAMP FITTING
The invention relates to an adapter for c onne c ting a compact discharge lamp to household voltage terminals in a lamp fitting via an electrical adapter circuit with electrical components inside an adapter housing provided with a holder portion for receiving and holding the base portion of said compact discharge lamp. A similar adapter, although with the electrical adapter circuit arranged outside the housing provided with the holder portion, is previously known from GB 2 077 488 (Philips).
An object of the present invention is to provide an adapter of the kind referred to in the opening paragraph, which has a simple, inexpensive and compact structure and which is easy to assemble, in particular with regard to the electrical connections of the electrical adapter circuit. Another object is to provide an adapter housing which is securely held in place in the lamp fitting while enabling embodiments, wherein the
necessary fasteners are concealed.
These objects are accomplished by an adapter as defined in claim 1, the novel features being stated i n the characterizing clause.
By the use of at least one upright or vertically standing circuit card, the electrical connections to the terminals of the lamp fitting and to the feeding pins of the compact discharge lamp can be made very short or, even more favorably, can be constituted by contact means placed directly on the lower and upper edge portions of the upright card or cards. Furthermore, the cover part of the adapter housing can be dimensioned so as to conceal the fasteners, by which the base part is secured to the lamp fitting.
Further advantageous features are defined in the dependent claims 2-10.
The invention will now be explained further below with reference to the drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of the inventive adapter.
Fig. 1 shows a perspective, exploded view of a lamp fitting, a compact discharge lamp unit and the various parts of the adapter according to the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a central, longitudinal section through the adapter of fig. 1 (upon assembly); and Fig. 3 is another central, longitudinal section, in a plane rotated 90° in relation to fig. 2, through the adapter of figs. 1 and 2 (the right half being left out).
In the illustrated example, the adapter is intended to be mounted in a lamp fitting of the kind having a ceramic base structure B with a cylindrical flange 1 having an internal thread 2 for screwed attachment of a transparent globe G with an externally threaded foot portion 3. Normally, such a lamp fitting is provided with a lamp holder (not shown) for an incadescent lamp centrally inside the base structure B. However, according to the invention, the conventional lamp holder is replaced by an adapter 4, which is permanently connected to the supply a.e. voltage screw head terminals 5,6, e.g. by means of contact sleeves 7,8 projecting downwards from a base part 9, formed substantially as a circular plate, of the adapter 4. At the top portion of a cupshaped, substantially cylindrical cover or upper housing part 10, there is a recessed holder portion 11 adapted to receive and hold the base portion 12 of a compact, fluorescent discharge lamp unit 13 of a standardized type.
The cup-shaped cover part 10 of the housing is secured to the base part 9 by means of a central screw 14, which extends through a central hole 15 in a recessed bottom wall 16 of the holder portion 11 and engages with its threads in a sleeve portion 17 projecting upwards from the central portion of the base part 9. This sleeve portion 17 forms a part of an upwardly projecting frame structure of the base part 9, serving to strengthen the latter, including peripheral, arcuate walls 18, 19 also serving to guide a widened lower edge portion 10a of the cover part 10, a centrally crossing wall 20, and straight walls 21, 22 connecting the ends of arcuate walls 18, 19. At the outside of each straight wall 21, 22, but inside the peripheral edge of the base plate 9, there are two holes for fastening screws 23 (only one is shown in fig. 1), by means of which the base plate is secured to the bottom of the lamp fitting base structure B (having non-illustrated threaded hole). All around the circumference of the base plate 9, there is a free surface for receiving the downwardly facing, circular rim surface of the widened portion 10a of the cover part 10. A ring washer 24 at the underside of the base plate 9 provides a somewhat resilient seal against the lamp fitting base structure B. Preferably, the lead-through holes above the contact sleeves 7 and 8 are also provided with sealing means. Furthermore, the cup-shaped cover part 10 is oriented in a correct rotational position by means of two oppositely located recesses 10b, 10c, one of which fits onto a corresponding lug 18a projecting radially outwards at the outside of the arcuate wall 18.
The electrical adapter circuit is provided on two upright or vertically standing circuit cards 25 and 26, which are oriented in parallel to each other, one on each side of the centrally crossing wall 20 of the base part 9 and the downwardly projecting holder portion 11 of the cover part 10. Each card 25, 26 has bulky electrical components 25a, 26a attached thereto and are mutually connected by at least one non-illustrated wire. The
lower edge portion of each card is provided with a terminal, electrically conductive strip 26b (only the one on card 26 is visible in fig. 1), which makes direct electrical contact with a resilient, electrically conductive tongue device 27 and 28, respectively, which also serves to mechanically hold the lower part of each circuit card 25, 26. The tongue device 27, 28 comprises three tongue members 27a, 27b, 27c and 28a, 28b, 28c, respectively, placed along the lower edge of each card, two of the tongue members engaging the card from one side and the third, central tongue member (27b, T8b) engaging the card from the other side. Each tongue device 27, 28, with its three tongue members is electrically connected to the respective contact sleeve 7, 8 so as to feed the supply voltage potentials to the respective circuit card 25, 26.
Adjacent the top edge of each card, there is a terminal spring element 29 and 30, respectively, each element being mechanically and electrically connected to the card for feeding the terminal pins 31 (only one is visible in fig. 1) of the lamp unit 13.
With this arrangement, there is a minimum of electrical connecting wires in the adapter, and the assembly thereof is very convenient and inexpensive. Upon assembly, a conventional U-shaped spring element 32 will conceal the central fastening screw 14.
The top portions of the circuit cards 25, 26 are held in place by means of holding lugs 33 and 34 projecting downwards from the top wall lOd of the cover part 10, as can be seen from figs. 2 and 3, one such lug being located in the region of each vertical edge of the respective card. When mounting the adapter 4 in a lamp fitting B, the housing is first taken apart, and the base part 9 is secured to the fitting. Then, the cover part 10 (with the circuit cards 25, 26 held in the holding lugs 33, 34) is
mounted, so that the circuit cards are positioned into the respective tongue device 27, 28, whereupon the screw 14 is tightened and the spring element 32 is snapped into its position.
Of course, the detailed structure of the adapter can be modifie by those skilled in the art within the scope of the claims. For example, the base part 9 can be provided with an upwardly projecting cylindrical flange, so that the dividing plane of the two housing parts is situated higher up. Also, depending on the geometry of the lamp fitting, the base part and the cover part may have a different geometrical configuration, e.g. in the for of a box-like, a barrel-like or a frustro-conical housing.
Instead of two planar circuit cards, it is possible to use one or more curved, e.g. cylindrical or U-shaped circuit cards.
