Definitions

  • This invention relates generally to Hookes universal joints. More particularly, the invention relates to the seals by which lubricant is retained within the bearings of a Hookes universal joint and dirt is excluded therefrom.
  • a Hookes universal joint as is well known, comprises two yokes, connected to one another by a cross member which has a first pair of oppositely extending journals pivotally received in -bearing cups held by spaced limbs of one of the yokes, and a second pair of oppositely extending journals, at right angles to the first pair of journals, pivotally received in bearing cups held by limbs of the other yoke.
  • each journal of the cross member is supported in its bearing cup by way of needle roller bearings.
  • At the open end of each bearing cup there is provided a seal which engages the journal to retain lubricant in the bearing cup and exclude dirt therefrom.
  • seals have usually taken the form of a separate component, held by the bearing cup.
  • seals of the type comprising an elastomeric ring affording a sealing lip, the elastomeric ring possibly being carried by a metal supporting ring, have been pressed into the open ends of the bearing cups, usually after the insertion of the required number of needle rollers into the cup.
  • Such provision of separate seals increases the cost and inconvenience of assembling the bearing. There is a risk of damage to the seals in the handling thereof. It is the object of the present invention to overcome or reduce these disadvantages.
  • a bearing cup for supporting a journal of a Hookes universal joint cross member, the bearing cup having a seal permanently secured thereto at its open end for cooperation with the journal.
  • the seal comprises an elastomeric seal affording a sealing lip, secured to the bearing cup by being moulded in situ thereon.
  • the seal may afford two sealing lips. This provides a more effective sealing action, with one sealing lip acting as a secondary seal and preventing dirt from reaching the other, main, sealing lip.
  • each sealing lip of the seal does not extend radially inwardly of the bearing cup beyond the internal wall surface thereof against which the needle rollers run. This facilitates automated loading of the needle rollers into the bearing cup.
  • the invention also provides a Hookes universal joint which includes bearing cups according to the invention as above set forth.
  • Figure 1 is an elevation of a Hookes universal joint
  • Figure 2 is a view, partly in section, of a unit pack for a Hookes universal joint according to the invention
  • Figures 3 and 4 are enlarged partly sectioned views showing detail of two different embodiments of bearing cup according to the invention.

  • the yokes are connected to one another by a cross member part of which is visible in Figure 1 and is indicated at 10.
  • the cross member comprises a body and four journals extending outwardly therefrom, a first pair of oppositely directed journals being received in apertures in spaced limbs of one of the yokes of the joint and the other pair of journals, at right angles to the first pair, being received in apertures in spaced limbs of the other yoke of the joint.
  • the journals of the cross member are received in needle roller bearings in bearing cups which are held in the journals, and in Figure 1 is visible the aperture 9 in one of the limbs of the yoke 5, and a circlip by which the respective bearing cup is held in place in the aperture in the yoke limb.
  • the cross member of the joint, together with the bearing cups and associated components comprises what is usually referred to as a unit pack, which is available separately (i.e. without the yokes which go to make up the complete joint) to be used as a service replacement for those parts of the joint which are likely to wear in use.
  • a unit pack for a Hookes universal joint comprises the cross member 10 having four outwardly extending journals 11, adjacent journals being at right angles to one another. Each journal 11 is supported in its respective bearing cup 12, with needle roller bearings 13 interposed between an internal circumferential surface of the bearing cup and an external circumferential bearing surface of the journal.
  • Lubrication passages 15 extend through the journals of the cross member for introduction of lubricant to the bearings thereof, the lubricant passages being connected to a common entrance passage 16 which is threaded to receive a grease nipple.
  • FIG. 18 which has two generally radially inwardly extending sealing lips 19, 20. These engage spaced parts of a surface 21 at the root of the journal 11.
  • the sealing lip 19 acts as a main seal to retain lubricant in the region of the needle roller bearings 13, while the sealing lip 20 acts as a secondary seal against escape of lubricant and also prevents external dirt from reaching the lip 19.
  • Figure 4 shows a modification of the seal of Figure 3.
  • the open end of the bearing cup is of slightly different configuration but still includes a portion (23) of reduced wall thickness. To this portion is secured, by being moulded in situ thereon, an elastomeric seal 24 which has two radially inwardly extending sealing lips 25, 26.
  • the root portion of the journal has a region 27 which is of slightly different configuration from that of the Figure 3 embodiment, with an external surface engagable by the sealing lips 25, 26.
