Abstract

Safety equipment for patient hoist with electric hoist system, which is provided with joint (A) fitted in hoist arms (B) and (C). In joint (A) is installed a safety circuit-breaker. The joint installed in the hoist arm secures the equipment against pressure or damage to persons or objects, in case of operating errors or errors in the remaining electrical equipment.

Description

Safety equipment for patient hoist with electric hoist system
The invention relates to an electrically operated patient hoist comprising a column, a hoist arm and a spindle motor, which is firmly attached to the floor or mounted on an undercarriage with wheels.
Patient hoists with electric hoist system, comprising a column, hoist arm and a spindle motor are known.
A patient hoist is needed in order to prevent personnel in
institutions from suffering a strained back when lifting a person. The patient hoist avoids this with the aid of a hoist arm which can be lowered over the person, whereupon a strap is placed about the person and the latter is lifted with the aid of the hoist arm. Since the hoist arm is movable, exerts a pull of about 600 kg and can be lowered over the person, a situation may arise in which the arm, instead of lifting about 600 kg, begins to exert a pressure of about 600 kg so as to crush the person under the hoist arm. Various electric systems are used in order to operate patient hoists:
Power is supplied by a battery or transformer. Relays are provided for high voltages, and there are smaller contact- or pressure systems for operating relays as well as emergency switches for supply voltages. All these systems entail the possibility of errors or faulty operation. In case of an error or faulty operation there is a danger of persons, who are not themselves able to take avoiding action, being clamped. Since the forces in these spindle motors are so high, injuries to persons may be serious. The operating personnel requires such extensive knowledge about the electrical equipment of the patient hoists and their operation as to greatly increase the risk of faulty operation.
The patient hoist according to the invention has the special
characteristic that its hoist arm is divided, the hoist arm with this division being capable of moving only in one direction. If the arm is lowered towards the person or object, irrespective of whether such lowering takes place deliberately or as the result of a technical or operational error, the division of the arm makes it impossible for pressure to be applied by more than the arm and possibly the weight of the harness and fittings.
As a result thereof it is not possible for persons or objects to be harmed if lowering takes place deliberately or inadvertently. A simple embodiment consists in dividing the hoist arm in such a way that it remains loose and movable in one direction. The lifting point of the spindle motor is located directly before the movable joint. However, according to the invention, it may be advisable to provide, in the joint of the hoist arm, a circuit-breaker for the operating current, and such an addition will further reduce the possibility of an operating fault. At the same time, the movable joint in the hoist arm has a space-saving effect, which is extremely advantageous as regards transportation of the hoist, both when despatching and transporting it to other locations where it is to be used.
The drawing shows an electric patient hoist according to the
invention, in which
drawing 1 shows an electric patient hoist seen from the side.
Drawing 2, Fig. 1 shows the machine in the folded state.
Drawing 2 Fig. 2 shows the detailed safety contact installed in joint A.
Drawing 3 shows the patient hoist seen from the side with a stop below the hoist arm and the motor in three positions. As shown in drawing 1, the patient hoist consists of an undercarriage F or a socket I for stationary mounting, column D and spindle motor E, which is attached to column D and to hoist arm part C. The hoist arm comprises three parts: the inner hoist arm part C, hinged to column D by means of joint J, and the outer hoist arm part B, mounted on hoist arm part C via joint A. Spindle motor E is mounted on hoist arm part C, directly in front of joint A, an emergency stop H and an operating unit G being likewise provided. As shown in drawing 2 Fig. 2, a safety contact is installed in hoist arm part C at joint A, as a result of which the control circuit of operating unit G cuts the control current for lowering the hoist arm if hoist arm part B at joint A does not activate circuit-breaker K.
Drawing 3 shows motor E in three positions,
position 1 with hoist arm parts C, A and B prior to reaching the stop, position 2 with hoist arm part B against stop L, hoist arm part C being in this case lower than part B, as a result of which joint A is opened so that circuit-breaker K is no longer activated, thus causing spindle motor E to come to a standstill.
Position 3 shows hoist arm part C in the lowest position. This position is reached if there is a fault in the electrical system for circuit-breaker K or if a circuit-breaker K is not fitted. Lowering to the lowest position therefore results only in further movement about part A.
