Definitions
- the invention relates to a hinged connector.
- hinged connectors are known and in common use. However, such connectors are of complicated construction, requiring a pin to be positioned between two plate portions such that the pin acts as a pivot point for each plate.
- One such hinged connector is the piano hinge, which is usually constructed in large (but finite) lengths in order that the length required for a particular task can be cut as desired. Such hinges are awkward and therefore costly to manufacture.
- An object of thd invention is to provide a hinged connector for hingedly connecting two separate portions which is easy and cheap to manufacture.
- the invention provides a hinged connector for hingedly connecting a panel to a structure comprising first and second portions attachable to the panel and structure respectively, and a hinging portion connecting the first and secondportions, wherein the connector is of one-piece construction.
- the connector is extruded from a plastics material.
- one-piece construction is intended to include both articles composed of a single material over the entire cross-section, and also articles composed of different materials over the cross-section, but manufactured in one piece, e.g. the hinging portion could be of a more resilient material than the first and second portion, the three portions being co-extruded to produce an integral connector.
- Such a connector can be used in the same manner as a common hinge. It can be rigidly attached to the separate portions to be hinged, which can be of any suitable material e.g. wood, metal etc. It can also be extruded in large lengths and cut to the required length for any particular job in a similar manner to a piano hinge. However, the manufacturing process is cheap and quick and therefore reduces the cost of such a connector. In addition, a connector according to the invention is easily attached to the separate portions and is quiet to operate and maintenance free.
- the first portion lies an an oblique angle to the second portion in the unstressed state of the connector, and means for retaining the first and second portions in parallel planes are provided.
- means are also provided for preventing relative slippage of the first and second portions when in the parallel planes.
- self-location means are provided adjacent the hinging portion for locating the first and second portions about an edge of a panel and structure respectively.
- Figure 1 is an end view of a hinged connector according to a first embodiment of the invention in a first position, shown attached to a structure and panel;
- Figure 2 is an end view of the hinged connector of Figure 1 in a second position, and
- Figure 3 is an end view of a hinged connector according to a second embodiment of the invention.
- the hinged connector 1 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b connected by means of a hinging portion 3.
- the first and second portions 2a, 2b. and the hinging portion are of a one-piece, homogeneous construction formed by extrusion. In the unstressed position, the first and second portions 2a, 2b lie substantially at right angles to one another.
- the material from which the connector 1 is formed and the shaping of the hinging portion 3 relative to the first and second portions 2a. 2b allow the first and second portions 2a. 2b to be pivoted relative to each other.
- the first and second portions 2a, 2b can be pivoted in both directions, i.e. so as to increase or decrease the angle between them.
- a groove 4 Located on the first and second portions 2a, 2b respectively, at the ends thereof remote from the hinging portion 3, are a groove 4 and a tongue 5.
- the tongue 5 extends substantially perpendicularly out from the second portion 2b.
- a protrusion 6 and a recess 7 are located on the first and second portions 2a, 2b respectively, this time adjacent the hinged portion 3, are a protrusion 6 and a recess 7.
- the protrusion 6 and recess 7 are formed in the inner faces of the first and second portions 2a, 2b.
- locating portions 8a, 8b are located adjacent the hinging portion 3 . These locating portions 8a, 8b extend from the outer faces of the first and second portions 2a, 2b substantially at right angles thereto. Screw holes 9 are located at intervals along the length of the connector 1 in order to facilitate fixing of the connector to the separate portions to be hinged.
- the connector 1 is made by extrusion from a plastics material having sufficient flexibility to allow the required hinging movement within the hinging portion 3.
- the plastics material must also have sufficient durability to be capable of a large number of hinging actions without being destroyed by fatigue.
- the extruded cross-section of the connector 1 i.e. in its unstressed state
- the angle between the first and second portions may be increased to, eg 110°, in order to compensate for plastic deformation of the hinging portion.
- the relevant edges of panel 10 and structure 11 are brought into abutting engagement with the outer faces of the first and second portions 2a, 2b and the respective locating portion 8a, 8b.
- the right angle formed by the outer face of the relevant first or second portion 2a, 2b and locating portion 8a, 8b ensures that the panel 10 and structure 11 will be aligned correctly when the connector 1 is operational.
- the first and second portions 2a, 2b are then screwed to the panel 10 and structure 11 respectively.
- the connector 1 In the unstressed state, and therefore when the panel 10 and structure 11 are allowed to come to rest unhindered, the connector 1 reverts to the configuration of extrusion, i.e. that shown in
- FIG l The panel 10 is therefore held in an open position.
- the hinging portion 3 allows the first portion 2a to pivot with respect to the second portion 2b until the inner faces meet.
- the tongue 5 is urged over the lip of the groove 4 and i ⁇ finally brought into engagement therewith.
- the protrusion 6 comes into engagement with the recess 7.
- the first and second portions 2a, 2b are prevented from springing apart under the action of the hinging portion 3 by means of the interengaged tongue 5 and groove 4, and from slipping in their parallel planes by the interengaged protrusion 6 and recess 7.
- the hinged connector is thus held firmly * in its "closed” position until the panel 10 is pulled open by hand.
- Figure 3 shows a second embodiment of the invention, wherein like reference numerals corresponding to like parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 have been used.
- the connector 1 shown in Fig. 3 has first and second portions 2a, 2b of relatively rigid PVC, whereas the hinging portion 3 is formed of a more flexible plastics material.
- the portions 2a, 2b and 3 are all co-extruded to form a single connector of one-piece construction, as defined above. In the unstressed state, the first and second portions 2a. 2b lie at an angle of approximately 110° to each other.
- the first and second portions 2a, 2b have tongue and groove formations 4,5 which co-operate when these portions 2a, 2b are brought into substantially paralled planes, thus holding the portions 2a, 2b in engagement until separated by hand, as previously described.
- cam means 12 are provided on each of the first and second portions 2a, 2b in order that, as the first and second portions approach each other, the elasticity of the hinging portion 3 is used to allow the tongue 5 to ride over the lip of the groove 4.
- the cam means 12 are thus shaped such that the first portion 2a is moved longitudinally relative to the second portion 2b towards the hinging portion 3 as the first and second portions 2a, 2b approach, and then away from the hinging portion 3 immediately before the first and second portions 2a, 2b make contact.
- This construction allows a rigid, harder wearing plastics material to be used for the first and second portions 2a, 2b.
- the main advantage of the connectors described above is that they can be extruded from a suitable plastics material and require only the addition of screw holes after forming. The production costs of such connectors are therefore very low.
- the connector can also be cut to any length to suit the purpose for which it is intended. Short lengths of the connector can be used at intervals of a long hinged edge, or else the connector can be attached along the entire length of the hinged edge.
- the connector as described above can have many uses. It is envisaged, however, that the invention would be advantageously applied to the self-assembly kitchen/bedroom furniture industry. Other uses would include connecting all forms of doors and/or windows to frames and/or structures wherein the doors and/or windows are located.
