Definitions

  • the invention relates to a hinged connector.
  • hinged connectors are known and in common use. However, such connectors are of complicated construction, requiring a pin to be positioned between two plate portions such that the pin acts as a pivot point for each plate.
  • One such hinged connector is the piano hinge, which is usually constructed in large (but finite) lengths in order that the length required for a particular task can be cut as desired. Such hinges are awkward and therefore costly to manufacture.
  • An object of thd invention is to provide a hinged connector for hingedly connecting two separate portions which is easy and cheap to manufacture.
  • the invention provides a hinged connector for hingedly connecting a panel to a structure comprising first and second portions attachable to the panel and structure respectively, and a hinging portion connecting the first and secondportions, wherein the connector is of one-piece construction.
  • the connector is extruded from a plastics material.
  • one-piece construction is intended to include both articles composed of a single material over the entire cross-section, and also articles composed of different materials over the cross-section, but manufactured in one piece, e.g. the hinging portion could be of a more resilient material than the first and second portion, the three portions being co-extruded to produce an integral connector.
  • Such a connector can be used in the same manner as a common hinge. It can be rigidly attached to the separate portions to be hinged, which can be of any suitable material e.g. wood, metal etc. It can also be extruded in large lengths and cut to the required length for any particular job in a similar manner to a piano hinge. However, the manufacturing process is cheap and quick and therefore reduces the cost of such a connector. In addition, a connector according to the invention is easily attached to the separate portions and is quiet to operate and maintenance free.

  • the first and second portions 2a, 2b have tongue and groove formations 4,5 which co-operate when these portions 2a, 2b are brought into substantially paralled planes, thus holding the portions 2a, 2b in engagement until separated by hand, as previously described.
  • cam means 12 are provided on each of the first and second portions 2a, 2b in order that, as the first and second portions approach each other, the elasticity of the hinging portion 3 is used to allow the tongue 5 to ride over the lip of the groove 4.
  • the cam means 12 are thus shaped such that the first portion 2a is moved longitudinally relative to the second portion 2b towards the hinging portion 3 as the first and second portions 2a, 2b approach, and then away from the hinging portion 3 immediately before the first and second portions 2a, 2b make contact.
  • This construction allows a rigid, harder wearing plastics material to be used for the first and second portions 2a, 2b.
  • the main advantage of the connectors described above is that they can be extruded from a suitable plastics material and require only the addition of screw holes after forming. The production costs of such connectors are therefore very low.
  • the connector can also be cut to any length to suit the purpose for which it is intended. Short lengths of the connector can be used at intervals of a long hinged edge, or else the connector can be attached along the entire length of the hinged edge.
  • the connector as described above can have many uses. It is envisaged, however, that the invention would be advantageously applied to the self-assembly kitchen/bedroom furniture industry. Other uses would include connecting all forms of doors and/or windows to frames and/or structures wherein the doors and/or windows are located.
