Abstract

An electrical connector includes a wire connecting portion (12) of sheet metal formed into channel section, the channel walls being provided with axial extensions (16, 16') bent inwardly towards each other so that their free, opposed edges define between them a wire receiving slot (18). Lugs (21, 21') are provided on respctive extensions (16, 16') between them defining a continuation of the slot (18). The base is formed with a slot (22) in which lugs (21, 21') are trapped so that opposed edges of the slot (22) provide a stop surface extending across the wire receiving slot (18) to trap wire therein.

Description

CONNECTOR WITH WIRE RECEIVI NG SLOT
The invention relates to electrical connectors of the type having a wire connecting portion providing a slot which receives a wire in an interference fit thereby to penetrate any insulation on the wire and establish permanent electrical connection to the wire core.
It is well known , in connectors of this type, for the wire connecting portions to be made of sheet metal stock formed into channel section , axial extensions of the channel wails being bent inwardly towards each other across the channel base transversely of channel axis so that their free, opposed ends define between them the wire receiving slots.
However, problems may arise particularly with the use of stranded or fine wires which may escape from the slot into any clearance between the axial extensions and the base with deterioration or loss of the electrical connection .
In addition , where the wire connecting portion is made from thin metal stock, it may be desirable to support the extensions to obviate the possibility of distortion or collapse by wire insertion .
In a connector according to the invention , the channel base is formed with a transverse stop surface extending across the wire receiving slot to prevent a wire inserted in the slot from escaping from the slot by passage between a lower end of the axial extensions and the base.
More specifically , the stop surface is formed by edges of a slot in the base extending below the extensions which are provided with lugs which are trapped in the slot, opposed edges of the lugs defining a continuation of the wire receiving slot.
Individual strands of wire may therefore be pushed to the bottom of the wire receiving slot into abutment with the base which will prevent their escape from the slot and ensure a reliable permanent electrical connection .
An example of an electrical connector according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Figure 1 is a perspective view of the connector;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1 ; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary underplan of the connector.
The connector is stamped and formed from a single piece of sheet metal stock and comprises a conventional tab receptacle contact portion 11 extending from a wire connecting portion 12 and a crimping portion 13.
The wire connecting portion 12 is of channel section, opposite sidewalls 14, 14' of which are bent up from a base wall 15 and provided at opposite axial ends with axial extensions 16,16' and 17, 17' respectively which are bent inwardly towards each other across the basewall so that their free, opposed ends define between them wire receiving slots 18 and 19, respectively.
Lugs 21 , 21' extend form the bottom edges of the respectively extensions 16, 16' and are trapped in a slot 22 which extends transversely across the base wall 15 , opposed edges of the lugs 21 , 21' providing a continuation of the wire receiving slot.
In use of the connector, a wire can be inserted completely along the slot 18 until it abuts against the base wall 15 where the slot edges will prevent any wire strands escaping from the slot. In addition , as the lugs are trapped in the slot, the integrity of the connector may be improved.
