Abstract
Description
- The invention relates to electrical connectors of the type having a wire connecting portion providing a slot which receives a wire in an interference fit thereby to penetrate any insulation on the wire and establish permanent electrical connection to the wire core.
- It is well known, in connectors of this type, for the wire connecting portions to be made of sheet metal stock formed into channel section, axial extensions of the channel walls being bent inwardly towards each other across the channel base transversely of channel axis so that their free, opposed ends define between them the wire receiving slots. Such a connector is disclosed in GB-A-614,897.
- However, problems may arise particularly with the use of stranded or fine wires which may escape from the slot into any clearance between the axial extensions and the base with deterioration or loss of the electrical connection.
- In addition, where the wire connecting portion is made from thin metal stock, it may be desirable to support the extensions to obviate the possibility of distortion or collapse by wire insertion.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide an electrical connector which overcomes these problems associated with known electrical connectors of this type.
- Accordingly, the present invention consists in an electrical connector having a wire connecting portion of sheet metal formed into a channel section having channel walls and a base, where each said channel wall is provided with an axial extension bent inwardly across the channel base toward the axial center of said connector, and opposed edges of said extensions define therebetween a wire receiving slot, characterized in that the base is provided with a lateral slot underlying at least a portion of each said axial extension, and that each said axial extension contains a downwardly projecting lug seated in the lateral slot whereby to retain a wire inserted along the slot.
- Preferably, opposed edges of the lugs define therebetween a continuation of the wire receiving slot.
- Individual strands of wire may therefore be pushed to the bottom of the wire receiving slot into abutment with the base which will prevent their escape from the slot and ensure a reliable permanent electrical connection.
- An example of an electrical connector according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the connector;
- Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1; and,
- Figure 3 is a fragmentary underplan of the connector.
- The connector is stamped and formed from a single piece of sheet metal stock and comprises a conventional tab receptacle contact portion 11 extending from a
wire connecting portion 12 and acrimping portion 13. - The
wire connecting portion 12 is of channel section, opposite sidewalls 14,14' of which are bent up from abase wall 15 and provided at opposite axial ends withaxial extensions wire receiving slots -
Lugs 21,21' extend respectively from the bottom edges of theextensions 16,16' and are trapped in aslot 22 which extends transversely across thebase wall 15, opposed edges of thelugs 21,21' providing a continuation of the wire receiving slot. - In use of the connector, a wire can be inserted completely along the
slot 18 until it abuts against thebase wall 15 where the slot edges will prevent any wire strands escaping from the slot. In addition, as the lugs are trapped in the slot, the integrity of the connector may be improved.
Claims (3)
