Abstract
Device for saving fuel both in diesel engines and in petrol engines, by means of a surface heat exchanger, made up of two coaxial tubes (1, 2) positioned one inside the other, so that an airtight hollow space is formed. Hot water which comes from the engine passes through the internal tube (1) and the fuel passes through the hollow space in such a way that this can be heated as it comes in contact with the walls of the inner tube, heated in its turn by the high temperature water which passes through it.
Description
"DEVICE FOR SAVING FUEL IN DIESEL AND PETROL ENGINES,
BY ME.4NS OF A SURFACE HEAT EXCHANGER".
This application for a patent for an industrial invention concerns a device for saving fuel in the motor vehicles, by means of a surface heat exchanger.
The problem, which thanks to the device at reference should be solved, is the problem of fuel consumption.
At present, all modern motor vehicles are- fitted with pumps and carburettors or injectors which let the fuel into the combustion chamber at ambient temperature. This system is not
effective as a small quantity of fuel is not uti¬ lized and is let off through the exhaust pipe.
In actual fact, it must be said that some rather empirical attempts have been made to obtain better results, but they have not been very convincing, both for the high costs and the installation difficulties.
On the other hand, the device according to the invention, is intended to obtain the saving of fuel in an extremely prac¬ tical, functional and above all economical manner, without interferring with the technical characteristics of the ve¬ hicle.
In fact, the device makes use of a surface heat exchanger to be applied either to the tube which conducts the hot water from the engine to the cooling radiator or to the tube which brings the hot water from the engine to the small radiator of the internal air-conditioning system, indifferently.
This heat exchanger is made up of two tubes, one inside the other, so that an airtight hollow space is created between
- -
the two .
The most, inner tube of the heat exchanger must be connected at both ends to the water tube which goes from the engine to the radiator. The latter tube should be interrupted and the exchanger itself inserted at the cut off ends, so that water can flow inside it.
The above-mentioned hollow space of the exchanger is in con tact with the outside by means of two small tubes in which are inserted: in one, the duct which brings the fuel from the tank to the engine, in the other, the small tube which starts from the exchanger and conducts the fuel to the pump. In this device, the hot water from the engine, by passing through the inner tube of the exchanger, ensures the heating of the walls; the fuel comes into contact with these walls while passing through the hollow space and is heated in its turn, so as to be able to reach the pump and therefore the engine at a temperature sufficient to be burnt completely without waste.
In order to explain more clearly, the description of the in¬ vention continues with reference to the drawing attached, in which Figure 1 is a section of the device according to the invention with partial representation of the inlet and out¬ let tubes.
With reference to the attached Figure, the invention is made up of a tube (1) with two nozzles at the ends on which the cut off ends of the duct through which the hot water flows, are inserted and tightly fastened by means of common hose clips.
On the outside of the tube (1) in a coaxial position, a tu¬ be (2) is inserted, so as to create an airtight hollow space which must be crossed by the fuel. The fuel enters and goes
out of two nozzles placed at the two ends of the tube it¬ self (2). The cut off ends of the duct which takes the fuel from the tank to the pump are inserted and clamped to these nozzles .
By experience we know that if the fuel enters the combustion chamber at a temperature higher than the outside temperatu¬ re, it is burnt more completely and betters both the com¬ bustion and the performance of the vehicle. Furthermore all problems caused by low temperatures in winter are eliminated thanks to the exchanger in question.
As regards the diesel engines, we know that during winter small crystals may form in the water contained in the diesel oil, which can cause many problems to the driver, who some¬ times is forced to stop the vehicle.
Up to now the problem has been solved by adding some additi¬ ves to the diesel oil, but at a low temperature good results are not obtained. On the contrary, using the exchanger de¬ scribed above, the diesel oil from the engine passes through it and is heated; in this way all crystals of frozen product are molten and the diesel oil enters the combustion engine at a higher temperature, thus bettering the performance of the vehicle and reducing the fuel consumption.

Claims
1) Device for saving fuel in diesel and petrol engines, by means of a surface heat exchanger, characterized by the fact that it is made up of an inner tube equipped with two nozzles on the ends, to be connected to the cut off ends of a duct to the engine through which hot water flows. On the outside of this tube in a coaxial position, a second tube is inserted so as to form an airtight hollow space through which the fuel must pass. The fuel goes in and out by means of two nozzles placed near the ends, to which the cut off ends of the duct which takes the fuel from the tank to the engine are connected.
