Abstract
A growing container, in particular for tomato and cucumber plants, consists of a white plastics foil bag (1) filled with granulated phenol foam (3). To improve its light-absorbing properties so that the roots (4) of the plants (2) can spread right out to the inner side of the plastics foil bag (1), said inner side is black. To improve the light reflection of the plastics foil bag (1) against the green parts of the plants (2), the upwardly facing outer side of the bag consists of metalized plastics foil.
Description
A growing container,- in particular for tomato and cucumber plants
The invention relates to a growing bag, in particular for tomato and cucumber plants, said growing bag being formed as a plastics foil bag containing a water-absorbing material, e.g. granulated phenol foam.
The known growing containers of this type are formed as long, substantially cylindrical bodies, with the plastics foil bag being kept dilated by the granulated phenol foam.
In the use of a growing bag, the bag is placed on the ground, and suitably spaced holes are cut in the upwardly facing part of the growing container. Each of the holes accommodates a plant whose roots spread and grow in the granulated phenol foam, to which nutrient liquids are added. Excess liquid can optionally be drained off through drain holes.
To protect the roots against sunlight the plastics foil is white so that it reflects the light.
However, it has unfortunately been found that the plant roots do not grow right out to the inner side of the foil bag so that the granulated phenol foam is not fully utilized.
This drawback is overcome according to the invention in that the growing container stated in the opening paragraph is unique in that the inner side of the plastics foil bag is black.
This provides for absorption of the part of the sunlight
which in spite of the white light reflecting exterior of the plastics foil bag penetrates through the plastics foil bag, so that also the region in the vicinity of the inner side of the plastics foil bag is fully protected against sunlight. Consequently, the plant roots grow right out to the inside of the plastics foil bag, so that the content of granulated phenol foam in the bag is fully utilized, thus providing optimum growth condi¬ tions for the plant.
Even better plant growth conditions are obtained when the outer side of the plastics foil bag consists of metal foil or metallized plastics foil, at least on the upwardly facing part, as this provides for increased reflection of light against the green parts of the plant.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the drawing, which shows a longitudinal section through a growing container according to the invention.
The drawing shows a growing bag 1 in which cucumber plants 2 are grown. The growing bag contains granulated phenol foam 3 in which the roots 4 of the plants 2 grow.
The growing bag 1 consists of plactics foil which is black on the inner side facing the phenol foam and white on the part of the outer side facing downwardly.
The outer side of the plastics foil bag consists of metallized plastics foil on the part of the bag which faces upwardly. Suitably spaced holes 5 are cut therein, the plants 2 being inserted in said holes. The metallized plastics foil on the upwardly facing outer side of the bag 1 reflects sunlight against the green parts of the cucumber plants 2. The black inner side of the plastics
foil bag ensures that no light penetrates into the bag so that the roots of the plants can spread everywhere in the bag.
