Abstract

An electret material is formed by the method which includes the step of passing a pair of electrical conductor elements (32) along one surface of a dielectric material (20) heated to a predetermined temperature. The conductor elements (32) are supported between a pair of support members (26) driven in a direction to move the conductor elements (32) along the surface of the dielectric material (20) for applying an electrical field to the material. An optical lens (30) focuses the radiant energy generated by a heating element positioned adjacent the surface of the dielectric material (20) and movable with the conductor elements (32) to heat the area of the dielectric material (20) located between the conductor elements (32) enabling the material to be polarized by the electrical field, thereby producing an electret. The advantage of moving the electrical conductors (32) along one surface of the dielectric material instead of along the opposite surfaces thereof is that the electret can be produced at relatively low cost, using relatively low voltages, and at a relatively high rate of speed.
