Definitions

  • This invention relates to a cable reeling device for use in suspension systems in which a supporting member, such as a workmen's cradle, is suspended from cables or ropes (referred to for convenience as cables) and the cradle is provided with power winches to permit the cradle to be raised and lowered on the supporting cables.
  • a supporting member such as a workmen's cradle
  • the invention is concerned, more particularly, with such suspension systems of the type in which each power winch requires two suspension cables, one constituting the main suspension cable upon which the winch operates and the other, normally passing loosely through the winch, being provided to operate a secondary brake device fitted to the power winch should the main suspension system ever fail. It is a requirement of systems of this type that a certain tension should always be present in the secondary cable in order to ensure correct operation of the brake device when needed. It is therefore necessary to take special measures, such as the addition of a weight, when the free length of cable below the winch is too short to provide the required tension and it is also important to make sure that the free length of secondary cable with or without weights is not obstructed in any way which would reduce the tension below the required value.
  • a further problem associated with suspension systems of this type is the obstruction caused by the free lengths of main and secondary cables beneath the winch in use. It is an object of the present invention to provide a cable reeling device for the free lengths of main and secondary cables in order to alleviate the above problems.
  • the present invention consists in a cable reeling device for a suspension system of the type indicated, which device includes a motor for driving a shaft upon which are mounted two drum hubs or receiving the main and secondary cables of the systems, each drum hub being, coupled to the shaft by means of a slipping clutch so that only limited tension may be applied to each cable.
  • the invention further consists in a suspension system of the type indicated which includes a cable reeling device as set forth in the preceding paragraph, wherein control of the motor of the reeling device is interlinked with a control system for the power winch so that during ascent the drum hubs are rotated to maintain a required tension in the cables and during descent the cables are let out against the slipping clutches.
  • Figure 1 is a general view of one form of cable reeling device according to the present invention
  • Figure 2 is a detail on an enlarged scale of the portion indicated as "A" on figure 1.
  • the device includes a shaft 11 supported at each end in bearings 12 and 13.
  • Two drum hubs 14 and 15 having side plates 16 are mounted for independent rotation upon shaft 11, and the shaft 11 is arranged to be rotated by a drive motor 17 via chain 18 and sprocket 19 secured to the shaft 11.
  • the side plates 16 of drum hub 14 are engaged by friction discs 20 and 21 and likewise the side plates 16 of drum hub 15 are engaged by friction discs 22 and 23.
  • Two drive discs 24 and 25 are keyed to shaft 11 in such a way as to transmit rotary motion from the shaft but being capable of sliding motion along the shaft.
  • An adjusting nut 26 on shaft 11 acting upon a spring 27 is arranged so that an adjustable clamping force is applied to the drum hubs to form a slipping clutch drive between each drum hub 14 or 15 and the shaft 11.
  • Main and secondary suspension cables 28 and 29 have their ends anchored in the drum hubs 14 and 15 respectively, the drum hubs 14 and 15 being helically grooved to ensure that the cables 28 and 29 lay evenly on the hubs as the layers of cable build up.
  • the side plates facilitate this action and serve to return the cables at the end of each layer.
  • drive motor 17 When ascent is selected on the main power winch (not shown) drive motor 17 is energized to take up the slack in the cables fed from the winch.
  • the gearing is designed to turn the drum hubs faster than the ascent rate of the power winch so that tension is created in the cables 28 and 29 but the tension is limited to the value at which the drum side plates and drive discs start slipping against the friction discs 20, 21, 22 and 23.
  • the tension in cables 28 and 29 may thus be set to a required value by means of adjusting nut 26.
  • the drive motor 17 When descent is selected at the main power winch, the drive motor 17 is not actuated and the cables 28 and 29 are unreeled against the friction developed between the drum side plates, the drive discs and the friction discs.
