Abstract

A percussive tool for manual use, the tool having a head (2) with a number of indentations (6, 7, 8 and 9) around the periphery and a handle (3) fixed to the head.

Description

-/-
HAND HELD PERCUSSIVE TOOL.
This invention relates to a hand held percussive tool having curved striking surfaces to be used for bending material over a mandril.
The previous application of hammers when used to bend material over a mandril or anvil, required a long length of bar stock to be used to resist reaction from the bending moment. Very o'ften the bar had to be heated, and to be held by tongs to reduce the reaction. It was also difficult to bend a bar in the required location with the correct curvature without reducing the strength of the material by heating.
It is my object to eliminate those disadvantages by providing a hammer which presents two forcing points to a bar while resting over a mandril and introduce a bending moment into that bar, with little or no-- reaction to the hand holding the bar in the cold condition.
My invention involves a profiled head having four concave surfaces of differing radii, separated by four lobes each convexly curved. This head is mounted on one end of a handle.
Figure imgf000003_0001
-BUREA The choice of the concave-curvatures of the head makes it possible to bend material over a wide range of radii with pleasing results regarding accuracy, smooth bends and freedom from indentations.
A better understanding of my invention may be obtained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hammer, and
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the hammer when viewed in the direction o'f the arrow A.
Figure 1 shows a hammer 1 with a head 2 of uniform thickness having a tubular handle 3 welded to the head 2 at 4 and having a knurled gripping portion 5.
Figure 2 shows the the head having four concave curved faces 6,7,8 and 9 which are used to make convex shapes. In this version there are four lobes 10,11,12 and 13 between the ends of the curves of the curved faces 6,7,8 and 9. The lobes 10,11,12 and 13 are used for making concave shapes.
Whilst I have, in the foregoing description, referred to a special embodiment of what I now feel to be the preferred form of my invention, there are variations within the inventive concept. For instance the head 2 can be cast, forged or fabricated, and the handle 3 can be screwed onto the head 2 and could be of timber or other material and socketed into the head 2. The curves faces 6 to 9 on the head 2 could be of any number and their shapes could be tapered to enable the forming of conical shapes. One or more of the curved faces 6 to 9 could be replaced with internal square corners.

Claims

Claim 1. A percussive tool for manual use, having a plurality of indentations around the periphery of a head portion and a handle fixed to the head.
Claim 2. A tool as claimed in claim 1 wherein the indentations are concavely curved.
Claim 3. A tool as claimed in claim 2 wherein the concave curves are tapered.
Claim 4. A tool as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least one indentation is formed by two intersecting flat faces to provide a re-entrant corner.
Claim 5. A tool as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 having lobes between adjacent indentations.
Claim 6. A tool as claimed in claim 5 wherein the lobes are convexly curved.
Claim 7. A tool as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the head is steel and the handle is tubular steel which is welded to the head.
Claim 8. A tool as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the handle is screwed into the head.
Claim 9. A tool as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the handle is made of timber or synthetic material and is socketed into the head.
