  • the apparatus operates in the following manner: When compressed air is supplied through the supply nipple 23, the compressed air flows into the rearward part la of the compressed air reservoir 1. Through the passage 17, the compressed air flows through the valve 15 into the space 19 in back of the piston 10 through an inlet 27. The compressed air will also pass through the holder 13 between the spokes, such that com ⁇ pressed air is also found in the forward part lb of the compressed air reservoir 1. However, the spring 25 will force the valve plate 7 against the seat 6. When firing, the actuator button 22 is pushed in and the slide 20 will be guided inwardly such that the passage 17 is closed while at the same time the outlet 18 from the cylinder space 19 is opened toward the drain passage 21.
  • the actuator button 22 will be provided with a safety guard to prevent accidental firing, for example, in the form of a cotter pin or a detachable cover.

Owing to the offset configuration of the compartment 33, the projectile will be heaviest in the forward end when fired.
  • the rearward end of the line 31 is fastened to a lid 35 which prevents air pressure from entering the compart ⁇ ment 33 during firing.
  • the lid 35 is fastened to the launching apparatus by means of a connecting rope 36. In this manner, the compartment with the line inside it will be held dry during storage.
  • the projectile When the projectile has been shot and all of the line 31 has run out of the compartment 33, the projectile will be heaviest in the rearward end thereof and will thus float on the water with its tip up, since a quantity of air will be trapped inside the projectile. This will be of great importance during rescue operations at sea. For example, it might happen that the projectile does not quite reach a disabled ship, but the personnel could reach it by means of a boathook or the like. Another situation in which it will be necessary that the projectile floats is when rendering assistance to small boats or liferafts. It will often be very difficult to shoot the projectile so accurately that the line falls down on a small boat or liferaft.
  • the rescue vessel can shoot the lifeline to windward of the small boat or raft, and let the projectile with the float line drift down to the raft.
  • the line and projectile can be fluorescent such that they will be easily visible to the people in distress when illuminated by a spotlight from the rescue vessel.
  • the line is laid in back- nd-forth loops inside the projectile. This is done very simply and quickly by means of the apparatus of Figure 3, which consists of an elongated, thin tube 37 whose rearward end is connected to a chamber 38 having a laterally- directed opening 39 for introduction of the line 31.
  • the chamber can be supplied with compressed air by means of an air hose 40.
  • the compressed air enters the chamber 38 through a nozzle 41 whose mouth lies nearer the tube 37 than the feed opening 39 for the line 31.
  • the end of the line is passed through the opening 39 into the tube 37 and compressed air is introduced into the chamber 38 through the nozzle 41.
  • the line is blown through the tube 37 and will lie in back-and-forth loops 42.
  • a perforated plate 43 attached to the tube 37 the line can be packed more tightly together at suitable intervals.
  • the line When the projectile of the invention is fired, the line will run out of the compartment in the projectile gradually as the projectile travels along its intended course.

Abstract

Appareil de lancement pour un projectile relie a une ligne de vie ou similaire comprenant un tube de lancement (2) en communication avec une source d'air comprime par l'intermediaire d'une vanne principale a mouvement rapide Un reservoir (1) d'air comprime est en communication avec le tube de lancement. La vanne principale (6, 6a) est disposee entre le reservoir (1) et le tube de lancement (2) et presente une section de debit importante. La vanne (6, 6a) est actionnee en position ouverte par un servo-mecanisme entraine par pression qui consiste en un cylindre (8) et en un piston (10) qui est relie a la vanne principale (6, 6a). Des admissions (27, 17) pour l'air comprime dans l'espace (19) du cylindre derriere le piston (10) sont prevues, une vanne a fonctionnement manuel dans la position de repos conservant l'admission (17) ouverte. Derriere le piston (10) est dispose un ressort de compression qui pousse le piston (10) et par consequent la vanne principale en position fermee. La vanne a fonctionnement manuel presente un passage de drainage (18, 21) depuis l'espace cylindrique (19) vers l'arriere du piston (10) qui est ouvert lorsque la vanne manuelle est actionnee, alors qu'en meme temps l'admission (17, 27) est fermee, de telle sorte que la pression derriere le piston (10) s'annule et que le piston (10) soit rappele vers l'arriere, la face frontale de ce piston etant exposee a l'air comprime du reservoir (1) Un projectile pour l'appareil de lancement de ligne de vie, en particulier pour un appareil de lancement a air, presente un compartiment ouvert vers l'arriere (33) dans le projectile destine a recevoir et contenant la longueur necessaire de ligne (31). La ligne est disposee a l'interieur du compartiment (33) en boucles disposees de l'avant vers l'arriere, en couches superposees, dans le compartiment. Le compartiment peut etre ferme au moyen d'un couvercle facilement amovible, afin d'empecher l'air sous-pression de penetrer dans le compartiment (33) lorsque le projectile est lance.
