Description

A FASTENING DEVICE FOR FIXING SANITARY WARE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a fastening device of plastics ma¬ terial for fixing sanitary ware* of ceramic material, e g lavatory basins, to a substructure by the insertion of the fastening device through holes in the sanitary- ware and holes in the substructure, one end portion of* the device being a plug arranged in the hole in the sub¬ structure when the device is fitted, said plug being laterally expand¬ able against the walls of the hole, while the opposing free end of the device is formed as a flange for engagement against the sanitary ware at the end of the hole therein, there being a hole with a substantially constant diameter extending centrally from the flange end and at least a distance into the plug.
DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART
Sanitary ware is usually fixed by using plugs of a conventional type, i e plastic plugs which are inserted into holes in the substructure, said holes being drilled using a template, and are so located that they correspond to the holes in the sanitary ware. Through-screws are then placed in the holes in the sanitary ware, and are tightened into the plugs causing the latter to expand. The screw heads will engage direct¬ ly against the sanitary ware, which is then easily damaged when the screw is tightened down. Damage usually occurs due to uneveness in the material, causing the pressure from the screw head to be concentrated at a point, or because the glaze has been scraped off by the tool used for tightening down the screws. Discolouration of the sanitary goods occurs after a time around the damaged place. Furthermore, a satisfac¬ tory seal between material and screw head is not obtained, resulting in that liquid can Leak into the holes, which must be considered as a disadvantage from the hygienic point of view. It has been sought to eliminate these disadvantages by placing a loose washer made from some plastic material under the screw head. It has been found by experience that the fitters do not often have these washers at hand when the item of sanitary ware is fitted in place and fitting will then be done with¬ out these washers. Extended plugs have also been proposed, including a

OMPI /., WIPO « tubular, non-expanding portion intended for accommodation in the hole in the sanitar ware* item, and a flange terminating the free end of this portion, formed for engaging round the edge of the hole in the material. Due to the large variations in thickness in the portions of the sanitary ware item intended for fixing, a consistent application of this proposal requires the availability of a plurality of different plug lengths.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to provide a. fastening device eliminating the risk of damage to the brittle material in sanitary ware when fixing and retaining such ware, this risk being present in the use of conventional fastening devices in the form of plugs, for example, said device being adaptable to different thicknesses of' sanitary ware at the same time, whereby the device enables a substantial reduction in plug assortment. The advantage is further achieved with a fastening device in accordance with the invention that satisfactory sealing of the holes in the sanitary ware is always obtained.
To achieve said objects and advantages, the device in accordance with the invention is characterized in that between the flange and plug it constitutes a portion formed for accommodation in the hole in the item of sanitary ware, said portion having substantially the same outside dimension as the plug and comprising a sleeve - shaped part extending from the flange and a part, elongatable in the longitudinal direction of the plug, arranged between the opposing ends surfaces of the sleeve- shaped part and the plug.
The sleeve-shaped part, serving as a seat and guide for a fastening element in the form of a screw or the like for attaching the fastening device, will protect the brittle material in the sanitary ware. The elongatable portion in the hole in the item of sanitary ware also has a protective function. The elongatable part will simultaneously ensure that the plug, when the screw is inserted, wi 11 always be moved down into the hole in the substructure for different thicknesses of the sanitary ware, whereby expansion of the plug when tightening down the screw only takes .place in the hole in the substructure. The flanged sleeve-shaped..part furthermore ensures satisfactory sealing of the hole in the item of sanitary* ware.
In a preferred embodiment of a fastening device in accordance with the invention, whereby the elongatable part comprises two helically formed filaments.or strands, the strands- extend from the respective end edges of the sleeve part and plug from diametrically situated places. Apart from increased strength resulting from the arrangement of two strands, improved, guidance of the screw is obtained, as well as an increased en¬ gagement, surface of the screw against the elongatable part and between this part and the wall of the hole.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
An embodiment of the fastening device in accordance with the invention will now be described in detail in the following whi le referring to the attached drawing on which
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the exemplified fasten¬ ing device, and Figure 2 is a. section along the line II-II in Figure 1.
PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The fastening device, which is made in one piece in a suitable plastics material, comprises three main parts with substantially the same outside dimension, namely a sleeve-shaped part 1, a part 2 elongatable in the general direction of the device, and a plug 3, formed for lateral ex¬ pansion. Extending from the free end of the sleeve part 1 the device has a central hole 4 which, after a distance in the plug 3 tapers and merges into a slit 5 made from the free end of the plug, and terminat¬ ing a distance from the opposite end thereof. The hole 4 is formed for coaction with a fastening screw (not shown), and when tightened down so that its head is in engagement against the free end of the sleeve part 1, said screw causes the expansion of the plug by means of the shape of the hole 4 in the plug 3 and the plug slit 5.
OMPI
^*MI In the illustrated embodiment, the sleeve-shaped part- 1 is formed at its free end with a conically upwardly diverging flange 6, and the sleeve body itself denoted by the numeral 7, is slightly tapered towards the elongatable part 2.
The elongatable part 2 comprises,' in the illustrated embodiment, two filaments or strands 8 and 9 formed helically and integrally with the end surface 10 of the sleeve body 7 and extending from diametrically situated places on the end surface.' The strands 8 and 9 go clockwise in a direction.towards the plug 3 and are formed integrally with the end surface of.the plug 11 at diametrically opposing places.
The fastening device, particularly formed for fixing sanitary ware, e g lavatory basins or hand basins is fitted in the following way. The device, with a screw inserted in its hole 4, is taken through a hole in the item of sanitary ware, and the plug 3 pressed down by means of the screw into position in a hole made in the substructure for the item, this hole having a depth at least equal- to. that of the plug length. When the screw is tightened so that its head is in engagement against the flange 6, which in turn engages round the edge of the hole in the item, said Lateral expansion of the plug to firm engagement with the wall of the hole in the substracture takes place.'As illustrated, the plug 3 can be provided with longitudinal ridges 12 for reinforcing the engagement and for preventing the plug turning while the screw is being tightened.
By means of such forming of a fastening device "in accordance with the invention, the brittle sanitary ware is.always protected against dam¬ age, since the sleeve part 1 and the elongatable part 2 surround the screw along the entire hole in the item of sanitary ware, and since it is ensured that no expansion of the device takes* place along this hole, while the use of one and the same fastening device is enabled at the same time by means of the elongatable part, with maintained, desired .function for different thicknesses of sanitary ware.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above and
OMPI
^rnSn i llustrated .on the drawings, but can be varied.in a plurality of ways within the scope of the following patent claims. Thus, the expandable plug included in the device can have some other form/ even if the il¬ lustrated form is advantageous, since the screw is easily inserted in the hole in the plug and the insertion of the plug and screw is a simple, operation since the plug does not expand before the screw is tightened down.
The elongatable portion can furthermore. comprise a wide-mesh stocking or a very thin-walled tube, which is both elongatable and compressible, i e it allows both positive and negative extension. The length of the device in a fitted condition is thereby suitably adjusted to the aver¬ age thickness of the portions of normally available sanitary ware in¬ tended for fixing.
