D noEAsED.
1.00K Foa PosToFF'icE Boxes f SPECIFICATION forming part of Reissued Letters Patent No. 9,666, dated April '12, 1381. Original No. 120,177, dated October 2li, 1871. Application led February 9, 1881.
lDIVISION B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LINUS YALE, Jr., deceased, late oi- Shelburne Falls, in the county of Franklin and State oi'll/Iassachnsetts, dur- 5 inghis lifetime invented a new and useful lmprovement in' Locks Specially Designed for the Doors of Post-Oiice Boxes, ofwhich the following is a specilication, reference being had -to the accompanying' (.lrawings, in which- Io Figure 1 is a View of an 'open door of' a postoiice box hinged to its frame and-having a lock and holt applied according to this invention.` Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing' the door partly opened and the lock and holt in perspective; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 Vof Fig'. l when the door is closed.
The improvements ofthe said LINUS YALE, Jr., deceased, in locks forpost-otice boxes are specially designed for the improved Inczo tallic doors and frames described in Letters ,Patent No. 119,212. reissued No. 8,783; and
they consist ot' devices operating in connection With such a door and its frame for locking the door to the frame from within, whereby all access to the box from without is prevented, the
devices heini,r sach as hereinafter more fully set forth, and as particularly specified. in the claims.
In carrying ont this invention a locir, A, is
5o used, which may be of the construction shown in Letters Patent No. 274, of January 29,
1861, or No. 48,475, of June 2'?, 1865, granted to said LINUS YALE, Jr., deceased.A This lock is attached to the metallic door B, so that when thedoor is closed its lock-holt d may be shot into aV recess, r, in the frame C, to 'lock the door.
It will be observed that the door is so constructed and applied to the frame that the 4o parte enters-within the frame, and the part g;
overlaps it whenthe door is shut.. On account 'of this construction (which, however, is not claimed in this patent) the door cannot ne iitted from its hingesewhen shut; and., further- 4 5 more, and a matter ot' importance to the present invention, the iocleboltd passing through the part is carried so farinward by the closing of the doorA as toibo in position to enter the recess 'r in the frame C, as alreadyr de scribed. Thus it will he perceived that this 5o' organization of the loch:l the metallic door, and the :metallic frame for use in. connection with post-oiiice letter-boxes effects perfect se curity, the 'frame operating as the boit-keeper.
An arm. a, of wire or other material is attached to the turning mechanism ot' the lock. through a slot, b, made in the casingin which the tnmblers, te., of the lock are placed. This arm is bent at its free end and engages with a pin, c, which is attached to the holtde The 6o casing of this holt is slotted horizontally at e and vertically at f. in Ywhich slots thepinc moves to push out and draw in the bolt, and to lock: it when pushed orthroivn ont.
The locking and unlocking of the' door is 65 accomplished from within bymeans oi' the arm and pin independently7 oi' the .key in the A'olirnving manner: The parts being` in the po sition shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the key is turned,
and the arm wie caused to move in an are ci' yo yvery useful eontrivancc, since it prevents ac cess to'the boxes .in case oi' the loss of the -Ifey, or in any other cases where the postmaster may desire it. 85
YVhat is claimed the invention of said LINUS YALE, Jr., deceased, is
