Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT 1N' RAILROAD-Gimme;
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No.v22,708 dated January 25, 1859; Reissue No. 922, dated y March 6, 1866.'
To ali whom. t 'may concern.
Be it known that I, D. W. CROCKER, of Deposit, iu the county of Delaware and State ot' New York, have invented a new'aud useful Improvement in Railwayhairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description ot` the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
whichp j -f Y Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical sect-Eon ot' a railwayioint and chair illustrating' iny improvement. Fig. 2 is a. transverse 'section ot' the sainein the plane indicated by the line/.1l .r in l, showiug'it complete. Fig.
3 is a similar section, with the tightening key omit ted.. Fig. 4 .is atrausvensesectiou of the Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-v struction ol' thc chair, so that when combined with the rail any weight passing over the rails will cause the jaws otl the chair to'grip the rails audprevent Athem from becoming dis- Iplaced, as hereinafter set forth. i
'lo enable others to make and usemy inven` tion, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The invention is more particularly applicable in connection with rails ot' what is known as the T 7. forni, but may be applied in connection with rails ot' other forni. The drawings represent its application in connection with thc T forni ot' rail.
A A are thc ends ot' the two rails, which may bc titted together squarely, or in anyother manner, to form the joint. B B are the two fportitmsot' the chair, bothalike, each consti tuting onehalll of the 'base a a and one ofthe i, jaws l1'b,.thejaws being made ot' a form to tit the bases, necks, and the lower parts ot` the heads ot' the rails, whose joint lcomes in thc middlel oi. the chair. c e are broad slots made transversely through the two pieces B B at an equal distance i'rcm both ends of the cha-ir,
'with their top faces ytlush with or slightly i higher than and parallel with the top face, d d, l of the base an, andwith their lower faces iu-l .cling upward from the outer toward the inner edges, asl slhownin Figs. 2 and 3, so as to leave the inner edges, e e, higher. than any other portion. f f are screw-bolts passing through holes h h in the base aa of the chair, on either side of the slots c c, and furnished with nuts' .g g, todraw the two piece'sf, `1? toward each other 'and make them claflp the rail. `The holes h h are tapered from the inner sides ot the two pieces B B tow-rrd the outer sides, so that the bolts fit them snugly at the outside of the chair,.butr so that enough of room is left'around the bolts at the middle of the chair to permit the two pieces B B to oseillate laterally, or, in other words,t'o have ay leverlikc action 'iu a. lateral direction."
C is a key passing through the slots ce, said key being Lmede -stightlytaperyand'one zof `saine in the plane indicated bythe line y y in 1 the slots being made slightly deeper than the In applying these chairs, the sleepers or 'crossties are Iiot placed directly under them, but under the rails at each end of and as close as practicable to the chairs, as indicated at D .D in Fig. ]and the chairs serve to confine.
the ends of the rails together, both `vertically and laterally. i
'Ihe key (l, passing under the bases of t..e rails at thejoint and resting upon the inner i edges, e e, ot' the slots in the rails, serves a dou` ble purposeviz., tirst, by driving the said key..at its thicker end it is caused to'press harder on the edges e e, and so to exerta. tendveucy to depress the base parts i a of the two pieces of the chair, and by that. means tov draw the' twojaws more firmly .or closely against the sides of and under the heads ot' the rails, so as to form practically a more rigid joint; and Isecond,.the weightot' thecars orlocomotive passing over either rail at or -near thejoint, andtcnding to depress lit rela'- tively to the other, is caused to bear upon the key, and thelatter thereby caused to press upon the edgesfe cot` the slot, and so to produce the. saine lateral lever-like action upon the two parts B loi' the chair as is produced l by driving the key, tightening thejaws upon the two rails in such a manner as to prevent the displacement of either relatively to thc other and make thejoint perfectly rigid. OI course, the above-described action ot' the weight of the cars or locomotives is only allowed to dcvelop itself inthe chair in case of the. cha-ir not being pr nerly tightened up by the key C,
or of the key aving worked loose, or by someA imperfection in the chair-,and if the jaws could be kept positively tight upon the rail by the key there would be non'eeessity for such action.
In` the above-described lateral lever-like .action of thekey, the-fulora upon which the two pieces B'B Work are the angles i i of Vthe upper-edges of thebases of the railsyfaud in order that such action may be developed to the best advantage, it is desirable that the`insides of thejaws should be so formed a' ,tol pre'vent them bearing upon the rails between the fulcra t' 'i and the s'mallest Irart of the neck of the rail', and bring the bearing above the smallest part of the neck and 4under the head of 4the rail, as is`fully illustrated in'Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
1 do notoonne myself to the particular construction of or mode of applying the divided chair'herein described; but' y What I claim asd my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isI`-,
,Thelconstruction ofptlle chair as -herein shown land describetL-so that the passing` lWeight will canse thej'aws of the chair to grip .the rails, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
