Description

IHOMAS ADAMS, OF BROOKLYN.- N. Y., AssIGNQR T JOHN D. ADAMS;
.CHEWlNG-GJJM.
SPECIFIC ATION formingpart of lteissued Letters Patent No. 9,152, April 13, 1880.
Original No. 111,798, dated February 14, 1871. Application for reissue filed February 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, Tnorms ADAMS, of the city of Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and s use'ful Improvement in Chewing-Gum; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. i
I have discovered that the substance known as gum chicle, and hereinafter more par-" ticular] described, has, when properly washed or olari ed, qualities which render it peculiarly adapted for use as a chewing-gum; and in order that others may understaud'aud practice,
said discover I will proceed to describe the pose specified, and subsequently to define in the claim what Ldesirmto secure byLetters e suhstarice referred to as chicle-or saaojpota'is afieetttbl gum or resin, the product ,0 ,atree lbouglug in botany to the family tdmhxlhich grows in Mexico.-
e [1 material varies'from a. dark cream tea brownish or earthy color, and is found 25 to contain the following constituents: chicle gum or resin, seventy-flveper cent. oxalate of lime,(with small quantities of sulphate and phosphate,) nine per cent; arabin, about ten per cent; sugar, about five per cent; salts, soluble in water, (chloride and sulphate of magnesia, small quantities of potash salts,) five-tenths of one per cent.
The chicle gum or resin contains alban, forty-five per cent; fluavil, thirty per cent; insoluble hydrocarbon, seventeen per cent; and soluble hydrocarbon, eight per cent. 7 i
The above figures are, of course, only 'approximate; but from them it is evident that chicle is merely the product of direct evaporation of the juice without attempt of separation, and that in the gum or resin butlittle of Hm nrioj'inul hydrocarbon has escaped oxidm fine suspension. foreign matter in solution and suspension is p then removed-slid the plastic or melted gum manner of adapting the material for the puf f tion,and thedifierence in the properties of original hydrocarbon is' readily comprehensible.
pose set forth, I first subject it to one or more hot-water baths, which softens and melts the same, and after boiling for some timo,milky, chocolate-colored liquids are obtained, which contain the f in,-saccharinematter, and soluble salts in so ution, and the oxalate of lime in The water containing the In preparing the crude material for the pur thegmnon resin from the properties of the i rolled or pouredinto sheets or strips of contenacious and ductile, and can be stretched, molded into form,0r broken and instantly rea united. It is practically free from deleterious properties, contains nothing of an unwholesome character, and is not dissolved by the' saliva of the mouth. 7
Previous to my invention chewing-gums have been made and used of various and more costly substances, not always free. from deleterious properties, and devoid of the qualities enumerated and contained in my invention. Therefore,
What I claim, ters Patent, is-
and desire to secure by L et- Achewing-gum composed of washed or clari fled chicle, as an improved article of inanu feature.
THOMAS ADAMS.
